    Go Hillary

I am frightened and confused....I find that I am adamantly supporting--HER. Good for her! She can use her immense power for good instead of evil...

Hillary Clinton targets new rise in video game violence

Backed by gruesome shots of computerised cannibalism, police beatings and violence, campaigners warned parents that their children were increasingly at risk from "sadistic" video games.

Senator Hillary Clinton and former vice presidential nominee Joseph Lieberman meanwhile launched new legislation intended to protect kids from graphic, violent and sexual material on their game consoles.

The National Institute on Media and the Family said in its annual report that video game retailors had failed to honor promises to safeguard children from violent and sexual content in new generation video games.

"There has been significant industry progress and reforms over the last decade, but ever more violent and sadistic games are still ending up in the hands of children," said the institute's president David Walsh.

Walsh called gave the video game industry a grade of "D+" over the last decade as regards protecting children, and called on retailers to embrace an independent ratings system for games.

"Retailers would rather appear as if they care about children instead of actually small steps to protect them," said Walsh.

Walsh concluded his presentation by showing video footage of games featuring police shootings, violence, graphic language and even cannibalism.

The Entertainment Software Ratings Board (ESRB), an industry self regulatory body was not working, Walsh said, and warned that boys as young as nine-years-old were often able to buy 'M' or mature rated video games.

Clinton sprung into action after a controversy earlier this year involving the latest edition of the "Grand Theft Auto" game which could be modified to include graphic sex with a modification called "Hot Coffee" available on the Internet.

"I have developed legislation that will empower parents by making sure their kids cant walk into a store and buy a video game that has graphic, violent and pornographic content," said Clinton, a possible 2008 presidential candidate.

"Today's report is yet further proof that we need to make sure parents have the tools and support they need to make informed decisions for their children."

The legislation would make it a crime for any business to sell or rent a Mature, Adults Only or Ratings pending game to anyone younger than seventeen.

On Monday, the gaming industry said Sony's next-generation PlayStation 3 would join the new Microsoft Xbox 360 in giving parents tools to limit access to computer games deemed too risque or violent.

That is pretty impressive- I for one have been appalled at some of the content (and packaging) of some video games. It is a shame that kids, young adults, (and adults, as well) are getting exposed and desensitized to certain (destructive and degrading) content. I feel that it contributes to the moral decay that seems to be permeating society, so good move on her part!

But overall, I feel that there are a few drops of kerosene in the cake mix. Also, another way to put it, kind of like...a wolf in sheep's clothing.

good article... I only have two issues or questions about it.

    1. Why target the retailers... all they do is sell the games. Better to target the manufacturer.

    2. "I have developed legislation that will empower parents by making sure their kids cant walk into a store and buy a video game that has graphic, violent and pornographic content." As quoted by Ms. Clinton...

When did parents need legislation to 'empower' them?? IMO the real issue is parents not actually 'being the parent' and controlling what their children purchase and not teaching their children the difference between right & wrong or fantasy & reality.

    cheers,
    Paul

You target the retailers because it is the easy means of stopping or slowing distribution of an item. Get rid of the supply channels and you will begin to affect the bottom line of the manufacturer which in turn may create a need for them to produce less violent titles.

The terminology leads one to the conclusion ALL parent's need empowered by legislation, we know this is not the case. There are parents who either don't care or don't know how to control their kids. Any additional assistance that can be provided to these parents should be applauded.

It is no secret that Hillary believes the government is better fit to know what is wrong or right for Americans. Changing the words "that empowers parents by making" to simply "makes" would have been a much better choice and sound less like she was trying to control and more like she was trying to help. In this case, that is what I think she is trying to do...Help.

    Good points R.E.
I can see something like retailers being required to see I.D. to sell the more violent games. Maybe something along the lines of 'Must be 17 or older'.

Something like this would help the parents who let kids purchase the games on their own. However, it does nothing to address parents who buy the games for "under-age" kids.
Granted, there are many kids in good homes who have a firm grasp on reality, right and wrong. These kids know and understand that 'this is just a game and is not representative of reality'. They play the game, have fun with it and move on. Parents of these kids have done their job and continue to do so.
My concern is the parents, as you mentioned, who either don't know how or don't care. They'll buy the games because the kid wants them... they're the the newest version or the hottest graphics, etc... These are the parents any game legislation will not reach. They need either a smack on the back of the head, education or a combination of the two.

I have to grin when my step-son (19) talks about kids who use the "video game defense", as he calls it, for games influencing them to commit crimes. He has no tolerance for them & calls it a lame excuse that they know a jury will buy into.

    cheers,
    Paul

The video game defense makes me laugh (and cringe).

Kind of like the insanity defense for those who commit murder. I have thought about that one a lot. I think each and every person tried for murder should be able to get away with that one. Sane people don't commit murder (at least in my book).
