    Military Hits October Recruiting Targets

    Military hits October recruiting targets

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Army, which missed its recruiting goal for 2005 by a wide margin, got off to a strong start in the new budget year by exceeding its October targets for the active-duty Army as well as the National Guard and Reserve.
The other military services also met their goals for active-duty enlistments in October, the first month of the budget year. The Air National Guard got barely half the recruits it wanted and the Navy Reserve met 89% of its goal.

The Army said it signed up 4,925 for active duty, or 105% of its goal. It was the fifth straight month of meeting or exceeding its goal, following a severe slump last spring that prevented the Army from reaching its full-year goal for 2005.

The Army ended the budget year Sept. 30 with an 8% shortfall — the first since 1999 and the largest in more than two decades.

The Army National Guard signed up 102% of its October goal and the Army Reserve got 103%.

Re-enlistments, which were strong last year while recruiting slipped, got off to a weaker start in October. The active Army re-enlisted 91% of its goal for the month; the National Guard and Reserve both got 98%.

An Army spokesman, Lt. Col. Bryan Hilferty, said re-enlistments typically are lower in the early part of the budget year. In October 2005, for example, the Army got only 83% of its goal but finished the budget year with more than 100%.

If this is good news, why be sarcastic, and snide? You got what you want, more young people to die for YOU, while YOU sit on YOUR butt and post "articles" on a Internet message board. Yeah, YOU should be very proud.

And it could mean, oh ignorant, stupid one, that the job market is so poor and college grants and funding so cut back (you do remember all those education cuts Bush granted don't you) that the military paycheck looked pretty damned good next to starving on the street.

    What a moron you are.

You just cannot stand it...the very thought that people want to protect this country. The hatred you feel towards them drips off your every word. To you, every soldier who signs up is a kick in the teeth to your desperate anti-American message. Good Lord.

Don't forget to mention that they lowered their standards for who's allowed to join the military by quite a bit.

    ARE YOU ****IN INSANE PWRONE.

who the **** do you think you are to say that other people dont want army recruits, that people dont want others to fight for this country. get the **** off you r high horse, cuase you dont do jack **** except sit on the internet looking for articles to slam liberals over.

you wouldnt even be able to stand next to an actual soldier his honor would overshadow you by so much, you insignificant little fack. How dare you say such things to people who you dont know about people you dont even know.

you dont have the first clue about patriots and people who fight for their country so dont open your ****in mouth to others and say they are unhappy there are more recruits.

your a ****in god damn jackass and i hope you sign up just so you can go to your beloved Iraq, then maybe you would see how taken advantage of our youths are by signing up for Iraq...pff what a joke you are.

you are so little and pathetic now its unbelievable. ****in cocksucking bastard, who the **** do you think you are.

every soldier that enlists i feel sorry for if they get assigned to Iraq. But ya know what, they probably will do it with honor and once they get there im sure will conduct themselves in such a way that would make your actions dissappear on the horizon, you maggot ****er. go suck Bush's dick and until you sign up for the army, dont try and talk like you know anything about recruits.

Re: Military Hits October Recruiting Targets

im willing to bet that half the armys recruits enlist because they want education money, or they have no other viable option sin life so they turn to the army to receive real life training so they can make a living for themselves.

while they dont have a choice where they are assigned to, what wars they fight, and where they fight, as a citizen of the US I would hope it would not be in the freakin Iraqi desert where they are not wanted, facing enemies that could be a ten year old boy or a 50 year old woman waiting to just blow themselves up in your presence in teh hopes of killing you.

it is sad the way recruits are sought after today, but in turn it is a good option for many people who dont have any other options in life, its just a shame how Bush can take such advantage of them like this.

I think you are confusing me with yourself. To me, every soldier who signs up is another probable body sack shipped back home to the states for a war that makes no sense.

If that's un-American in your view, perhaps you need to get a more realistic view.

I think it would be fair to allow these men and women to become soldiers if they choose to and to respect them when they do. NOT prevent that option from being offered to them, NOT make fun of them, NOT call them criminals and monsters, NOT encourage those they are fighting against by lying about their President and actively undermining their efforts.

So...how was our military recruiting doing during ANY OTHER time in history? To deny the patriotism of these people is typical of the view you have of those who protect you. Cops, soldiers...it doesn't matter. You are just looking for an excuse to spit on them. To suggest they become soldiers "because the job market is bad" is, as usual, either stupid or evil. Choose.

Re: Military Hits October Recruiting Targets

I've worked with a lot of soldiers in the past 2 1/2 years (Army). The ones I knew that were being sent to Iraq were just normal folks. You know... families, kids, etc...
Many joined for the 'real world' experience and the possibillity of getting into their desired field once their service was completed. For example, law enforcement. Many law enforcement organizations draw heavily from former military... they have the basic skills required.
Yes, some do join for military career opportunities and others join to 'do their part'. Many also join to get out from "Mom & Dad" and find out what they're actually made of... for each soldier you ask you'll, most likely, get a different reason for joining.

To those who enlist; May you find what you're looking for, do well, be careful and stay safe.

    cheers,
    Paul

Military personnel was recruited for the same reasons then as now. AS A JOB! Since you r are trying to interject history, read some. You have no idea how armies, and soldiers held a country up to it's promises. Drafting and brainwashing is relatively new. The way military personnel is treated now is a disgrace, and is in no way, the norm. Armies of old, got their due, and did not have to beg, and wait for their reward. Read a military history book, and learn.

The last statement is particularly silly and completely untrue. Read a book sometime.

I read constantly, but thanks. The last sentence, if you would READ your own posts, is a response to the ridiculous assertion by sja and eagerly agreed to by you . Somehow, the two of you know what is best for these people and have decided that joining the military ain't it. I think they can make up their own mind and many of them, regardless of your protests, have decided that serving their country is what they want to do. I know, I know...but there it is.

Re: Military Hits October Recruiting Targets

An aspect of the recruiter's job that is not usually mentioned is that it is a "sales" position. Recruiters are expected to hit certain numbers within a designated time frame. If they don't hit the numbers... they loose a cushy job. Therefore, when dealing with recruiters one needs to keep a clear head and realize they are being 'sold' on the idea of jobs, adventure, patriotism, education, career... you name it. It is no different than a 'Private Sector' sales position and as such potential recruits, if not aware of this, need to be. A good recruiter, like a good salesman, will find out what 'gets you going, and hit those buttons.
I'm not saying it's right or wrong... that's just the way it is.

From what I understand of "armies of old' (19th Century and earlier European) DeeDee is that, for the most part they were comprised of the dregs of society, many times they were pressed into service (kidnapped) and commanded by the landed gentry.

    cheers,
    Paul
