Wow pwrone! I'm more than a little surprised that you didn't know about Thurmond's child... Tell me... Do you think Lott was unduly attacked for what he said?

The very idea that libs would ignore something even vaguely similar is ludicrous...as they have demonsrtrated countless times, they DO NOT CARE what the actual intent is, they will attack anyone, no matter the truth or the circumstances. And it is especially refreshing to see you defending a former "grand kleagle"(anything but a silent bystander) after your hysterical remarks about nazis and other scum. It is okay, apparently, if he is one of the leaders of YOUR political party. Got it.
I look at this this way... any elected official - Democrat OR Republican - who joined or remained an active participant in the KKK AFTER segregation was ended, should not be in office. It all goes back to "when we know better, we do better". Like Paul has pointed out - the KKK was VERY powerful in the 40s - you can't compare it to NOW... it just doesn't make sense.

People CAN change pwrone.. I think Byrd redeemed himself when segregation became an issue - he has never denied his involvement in the 40s. His Father was a member of the KKK, so he "grew up" in that environment. Just goes to show ya that kids learn from their parents - good and bad things. But as he got older and "knew better" - he "did better". You won't accept this because he is a Democrat... if he were a Republican, you would see it differently.... ;)

It might be of interest to note that almost every important civil rights advance was initiated by Republicans and fought by democrats...that is how you end up with the klan in congress in the 21st century.

NO..That's how you end up flushing your own credibility down the toilet. But, then again, nothing you've ever posted here has established any credibility for you. First, try writing something that has some remote semblance of truth to it and makes some sense. As it is now, even if you posted 2 + 2 =4, it would be tempting to get out a calculator.

Black Support for Bush Drops to 2%

    by Larry Elder
    Posted Nov 17, 2005

So much for the Republican “outreach” to black voters, with only 2% of blacks “approving” of the president’s performance.

If only blacks knew of the true history of the Democratic Party.

“Black History Month” has been observed for 29 years, yet many blacks know little to nothing about the parties’ respective roles in advancing or hindering the civil rights of blacks. How many blacks know that following the Civil War, 23 blacks -- 13 of them ex-slaves—were elected to Congress, all as Republicans? The first black Democrat was not elected to Congress until 1935, from the state of Illinois. The first black congressional Democrat from a Southern state was not elected until 1973.

Democrats, in 1854, passed the Kansas-Nebraska Act. This overturned the Missouri Compromise and allowed for the importation of slaves into the territories. Disgusted with the passage of this Act, free-soilers and anti-slavery members of the Whig and Democratic parties founded the Republican Party—not just to stop the spread of slavery, but to eventually abolish it.

How many blacks know that blacks founded the Texas Republican Party? On July 4, 1867, in Houston, Texas, 150 blacks and 20 whites formed the party. No, not the Black Texas Republican Party, they founded the Texas Republican Party. Blacks across Southern states also founded the Republican parties in their states.

Fugitive slave laws? In 1850, Democrats passed the Fugitive Slave Law. If merely accused of being a slave, even if the person enjoyed freedom all of his or her life (as approximately 11% of blacks did just before the Civil War), the person lost the right to representation by an attorney, the right to trial by jury, and the right to habeas corpus.

Emancipation? Republican President Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation during the Civil War. In 1865, the 13th Amendment emancipating the slaves was passed with 100 percent of Republicans (88 of 88 in the House, 30 of 30 in the Senate) voting for it. Only 23% of Democrats (16 of 66 in the House, three of eight in the Senate) voted for it.

Civil rights laws? In 1868, the 14th Amendment was passed giving the newly emancipated blacks full civil rights and federal guarantee of those rights, superseding any state laws. Every single voting Republican (128 of 134—with six not voting—in the House, and 30 of 32—with two not voting—in the Senate) voted for the 14th Amendment. Not a single Democrat (zero of 36 in the House, zero of six in the Senate) voted for it.

Right to vote? When Southern states balked at implementing the 14th Amendment, Congress came back and passed the 15th Amendment in 1870, guaranteeing blacks the right to vote. Every single Republican voted for it, with every Democrat voting against it.

Ku Klux Klan? In 1872 congressional investigations, Democrats admitted beginning the Klan as an effort to stop the spread of the Republican Party and to re-establish Democratic control in Southern states. As PBS’ “American Experience” notes, “In outright defiance of the Republican-led federal government, Southern Democrats formed organizations that violently intimidated blacks and Republicans who tried to win political power. The most prominent of these, the Ku Klux Klan, was formed in Pulaski, Tenn., in 1865.” Blacks, who were all Republican at that time, became the primary targets of violence.

Jim Crow laws? Between 1870 and 1875, the Republican Congress passed many pro-black civil rights laws. But in 1876, Democrats took control of the House, and no further race-based civil rights laws passed until 1957. In 1892, Democrats gained control of the House, the Senate and the White House, and repealed all the Republican-passed civil rights laws. That enabled the Southern Democrats to pass the Jim Crow laws, poll taxes, literacy tests, and so on, in their individual states.

Civil rights in the ‘60s? Only 64% of Democrats in Congress voted for the 1964 Civil Rights Act (153 for, 91 against in the House; and 46 for, 21 against in the Senate). But 80% of Republicans (136 for, 35 against in the House; and 27 for, six against in the Senate) voted for the 1964 Act.

What about the reviled, allegedly anti-black, Republican “Southern strategy”? Pat Buchanan, writing for Richard Nixon (who became the Republican Party candidate two years later) coined the term “Southern strategy.” They expected the “strategy” to ultimately result in the complete marginalization of racist Southern Democrats. “We would build our Republican Party on a foundation of states’ rights, human rights, small government, and a strong national defense,” said Buchanan, “and leave it to the ‘party of [Democratic Georgia Gov. Lester] Maddox, [1966 Democratic challenger against Spiro Agnew for Maryland governor George] Mahoney, and [Democratic Alabama Gov. George] Wallace to squeeze the last ounces of political juice out of the rotting fruit of racial injustice.’” And President Richard Nixon, Republican, implemented the first federal affirmative action (race-based preference) laws with goals and timetables.

So next “Black History Month,” pass some of this stuff along.

Elder – like Shelby Steele before him, and Walter Williams before that, and Ken Hamblin before that, and Thomas Sowell before him, and Clarence Thomas always – says the kinds of things that most white folks love to hear: essentially, that blacks are the source of their own problems in life. Black cultural pathology and bad behavior, according to these types, explain everything from black poverty rates to black incarceration rates.

What about racism?, you may ask. What racism? To the Larry Elders of the world – and to the whites who have made them media stars entirely out of proportion to their scholarly credentials (or decided lack thereof) – racism is just an excuse black people use to explain away their own internal shortcomings.

Lately, two of the more popular arguments made by black conservatives and the white people who love them are, first, that blacks spend too much money on luxury items they can't afford, refusing to save money the way responsible white folks do; and second, that blacks place too little value on education, preferring to critique learning as selling out or "acting white," and thereby sabotaging their own achievement.

That the evidence for both of these positions is utterly lacking makes little difference, it seems. After all, when one is saying what the Man wants to hear, the Man requires no footnotes or actual corroboration.

None of this is to say that the black con-artist conservatives are entirely irrational. After all, their hustle has paid enormous dividends. Black conservatives, by dint of their hard work on behalf of institutionalized white domination, have managed to obtain access to the halls of power, and even occasionally positions of power themselves. On the one hand, this kind of step'n fetchit routine can be lucrative and professionally rewarding: for those willing to play the game, or convince themselves of the beneficence of their white cocktail party friends, it can mean foundation grants, endowed chairs at right-wing think tanks, radio shows, syndicated columns and regular appearances on Fox.

But one thing it will likely never bring is acceptance from one's own community, and this self-exiled condition, combined with an eventual recognition that one is being used, can lead to near-complete personal and professional meltdowns.

Consider Glenn Loury, formerly a shining light in the black conservative firmament, who eventually came to the conclusion that his friends and supporters really didn't like black folks much. After all, the same conservatives at the Bradley Foundation who hawk vouchers in public school so as to "save black children" also helped fund the writing of The Bell Curve, which says, among other things, that there's pretty much nothing that can be done for black folks, due to their congenital predisposition to ignorance, sloth and crime. Enough of those contradictions, and even the most hardened black conservative may come around.

Or maybe not. But luckily there are antidotes to the hustle emanating forcefully from the black community, such as the hard-hitting commentary and exposes at the Black Commentator, which have skewered not only the voucher con, but also the individual players from Powell to Rice to lesser-known but rising figures on the black right. What they and the bulk of black America knows well, and what the rest of us must learn, is that the propaganda dispensed by black conservatives is not only poisonous in its implications, but it is based on utterly false analysis, distorted data and the hope on the part of its purveyors that the rest of us will never wise up to their game.

You, and those like you(white liberals) have decided how blacks should think and feel. Instead of simply disagreeing with someones position, they have to be proven to have something wrong with them. Elders opinion that blacks do not place proper emphasis on education is debatable; but to imply that there is evidence to the contrary is simply not true. Liberals despise conservative blacks because they daily disprove liberal theory...that minorities need to be given help to succeed. Liberals stand by and do nothing when racist attacks are leveled at conservative blacks but go ballistic if any hint of it is directed at anyone who walks the company line. Let's take a peek at how some ACTUAL racists view conservative blacks, shall we?

One is one of many campaign smears from a couple of weeks ago(yet to be disowned by any libs, of course), and one is from one of your favorite "editorialists". I am sure you will recognize his "work".

Mrs.Pirro should not throw stones, because boulders can be thrown back. If memory serves me correctly she had some issues with her husband that involved jail time I think.

Larry Elder is a 21st Century Minstrel. This has become a popular career move for some blacks to catch a ride on the train of professional political pimps, wh0res and phonies. And the GOP loves this tactic and exploits it to help obscure and colorize the unvarnished image that reveals what they're really about.
What could make a better minstrel show for the fascist right than being able to trot out some "cultured" blacks to unveil at the show so we can all see how "cool" and progressive they are.

One of my favorites was Armstong Williams, the goofy, buttoned down, bow tied queen who was exposed as being on the Bush Crime Gang's payroll. His job was to dissemble and spin right-wing propa-dogma on Fox "News" while pretending to be a "journalist".

    Ya gotta love it.
