    Re: secret shopping

I've just recently started looking into this as a way to make a few extra bucks or get some discounts.

I found one site/board that has links to various services and agencies, but I'm not ready to recommend it yet until I get some more info.

I would be interested to hear from anyone else who does this though.

me too. The extra bucks (and maybe free meals) sounds kinda nice.

    Anybody have experience doing this?

The offers are few and far between, but they are legit. My mom is in California, and has been given three assignments so far, and I just got my first assignment a week ago (after about a year of being a member).

There is no need to be a member of any site that charges for information about mystery shopping. Mystery shopping can be very good depending upon where you live. Check out the two best sites. Both are free.
Mystery shoppers providers assn and http://www.volition.com
Many of the mystery shopping sites have their own forums also where
    schedulers can post jobs.

I agree. Don't use sites that charge you for a list. Most of the better companies are listed with Volition, and it is free to access.

If you are serious about doing this, I suggest getting certified by MSPA. The $15 certification fee for online Silver certification is worth it, and looks good on your resume. To get the really good assignments (free cruises, etc.), you must be Gold certified. For Gold certification you must attend one of the MSPA workshops held in different cities in the US and Canada. The cost of the workshop is $99.

However, without certification, you can get some free meals and pick up an extra $5 - $30 or more for assignments.

The key to getting more assignments is to follow instructions in detail, take good notes and process your paperwork accurately and on time. And accept an assignment only if you know you will be able to follow through. Not accepting assignments won't hurt you...not following through will.

Just an FYI for anyone in Nevada...
It is illegal to mystery shop in Nevada as an independent contractor. Nevada law requires that you be an employee of a Private Investigation Agency to perform shops. If caught mystery shopping illegally in this state, the fine is something like $2500 per instance. I believe the MSPA site lists member agencies in Nevada that you can apply with.

    Secret Shopper Scam

I got a call the other day from a company claiming to be secret shopper. They say they got my resume off of Monster. They gave me a brief interview, and said they would send me a packet with a trial assignment. It came today. This smells like a scam, and seems to match a secret shopper scam I found out about while searching online. It instructs me to go to an area walmart and send a moneygram to a Peter Stephens. They included a realistic looking check drawn on a Lowell, MA based credit union which includes the amount needed plus enough to cover the $200 evaluation fee. According to Superpages.com yellow pages search site, the credit union appears legit (Jeanne D'Arc Credit Union). Has anyone heard of this??

    Please Advise

If they are asking you to cash/deposit the MO and send money from your account, DON'T. The MO wil almost certainly turn out to be forged, counterfeit or stolen.

I would suggest you send the whole packet to the Credit Union to the attention of the President.

No. Do not fall for this. There are plenty of legitimate Secret/Mystery Shopper sites out there, and they never make you pay for it. All these scams do is compile a list of legitimate companies and then sell them to you. Just go to your favorite search engine and search for secret shopper if you're interested.
Side Note: Beware of Retail Report Card. They are owned by Product Test Panel and almost impossible to complete thier TOS.

    Re: Secret Shopper Scam

There are tons of mystery shopper scams, especially ones that require you to make some purchase first. I get them almost daily in email. But there is also a network that lists the legitimate companies that contract shoppers. I actually got an email from a company asking me to call him. I did so, yesterday, and he explained the shop. He gave full instructions about what I would receive in the mail from his company as well as the client for whom I will be doing the assignment.

He then asked if it was my first ever assignment. When I told him it is, he took the time to advise that I be careful, that there are tons of scams out. If I ever have to buy or pay for anything up front, he said it's a scam. He has been in biz for over 20 years and told me I could check the Better Biz Bureau before accepting his assignment if I wanted. I may be showing my naivitee, but I feel that if someone offers me to check them out first, it's go to be on the up and up. I could check before doing the job as well, if I sense anything looks shady.

I emailed my list to my daughter who lives out of town from me. She contacted a few of the companies that cover where she lives. She got an email and phone call within a couple of weeks and did 2 assignments, which was great because they specifically wanted a 'young mother' going in with children.

    Re: Secret Shopper Scam

Volition.com is the most legitimate secret shopper site. There is also a site from the Mystery Shopper Providers Assn. There is also Lila's lounge and many yahoo sites for mystery shopping assignments. The ones that charge a fee to find out about assignments merely lift the assignments from other sites.

    First stern warning from http://www.wahm.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=361167

Second, mystery shopping companies never pay upfront.

And if you are really intrested in mystery shopping, I found pretty detailed list of those companies and it is free

    Re: Secret shopper scam

Let me guess - they wanted you to evaluate Wal-mart or Pennys buying $100 worth of stuff w/ that money and sending the rest back to them via moneygram to "cover the taxes and fees" then fax them your report. I got that check last year and sent all of it to the feds. It was postmarked from Canada and off a bank in Ma. that had been closed for 10 yrs - the website was down for maint. and the phone# was to a fax. My advice rip it up - if you cash it you are screwed.
