    Scamming Old People

Just wanted to share a story. Although there is very little risk from this happening to other's it is still something I have never seen before and hope doesn't happen to other people. Its about scammers scamming old people.

My wife's grandparents are in their 70s and have moved into a retirement development. They were renting their previous primary home for the past 15 months to a family of four. The rent was $2,250 for the home (may seem pricey, but for the location and size and what was being offered this was market rate).
Sometime in August, the renter's asked to pay less rent of $1,800. This was negotiated and accepted, however, the way it was negotiated was where the scam comes in. My wife's grandparents are devout Christians. When I say devout, that really doesn't encapsulate their beliefs all because they literally live their entire life by the WWJD slogan. At around the same time the renegotiation happened, the renter started sending emails asking for "spiritual guidance" regarding his faith being shaken in the face of some struggles. It soon turned into "praying for a miracle, Jesus will help us with our struggles since we can't afford rent anymore". They stopped paying rent in September and instead offered to "pay" with prayer. The tone of the emails takes a dramatic turn; talk of "miracles of Christ" by allowing them to stay, how their faith is restored, how if they pray more and hard enough their troubles will go away.
Yesterday my wife's aunt found out about this. With 8 months of back rent and them not paying anything, we had to go and start an eviction proceeding as required by state law. These tenant's responded in private that this was "shaking their faith again and a challenge from Christ". My wife's grandfather immediately wanted to drop the the eviction, afraid that this would put a damper in their beliefs. He is more concerned with their faith then being a landlord. Taxes are still due on the property, so not only is he losing on rent money, but he is also in the hole after paying real estate taxes.
TLDR: Tenants used someone's religious beliefs in order to avoid paying rent for the last 8 months and would have continued to live rent free had it not been discovered by a third party.

    Re: Scamming Old People

Thanks for posting up that information on a scam.

Making a scammer's scam googlable on every scam-warner-anti-fraud-busting site you can find is a great way to slow that scammer down when a suspicious potential victim goes looking for information, finds your post containing the name the scammer is using, his email address, phone number and the emails themselves and then that potential victim does not become a scam victim because you took the time "get the word out".

Wasting a scammer's time legally and safely is called "scambaiting". If you google that word, you will find sites where you can read scambaits, post up the emails and email addresses of scammers, post up a fake website, read up on how to alert a hosting company that they are hosting a fake website, ask questions and learn all about the hobby of scambaiting.
