    Wild, Wooly and Wacko

Are these right wing gun wackos nuts or what. Break out the trailer park militia! You've got a lot of desperate people under a whole lot of stress all jammed together in one camp and LaPierre wants to arm them. I just can't see the rationale behind this thinking.

Gun rights groups protest FEMA firearms ban

Agency may allow guns at trailer park used as temporary Katrina housing

    The Associated Press
    Updated: 3:46 p.m. ET Oct. 12, 2005

BATON ROUGE, La. - Under pressure from gun rights groups, FEMA said Wednesday it is reconsidering a ban on firearms at a trailer park established to temporarily house Hurricane Katrina victims.

“We’ve got attorneys who are looking at that as we speak and they’re trying to figure out who wrote the rules, what the intent was,” FEMA spokesman Butch Kinerney said.

The dispute involves a nearly 600-trailer encampment that opened last week near Baton Rouge. Katrina evacuees will be allowed to stay there rent-free while they try to find permanent housing.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency said it has been general policy at FEMA for several years to prohibit guns at such parks anywhere in the country.

But the National Rifle Association threatened to sue, and another gun rights group, the Second Amendment Foundation, said it, too, was looking at legal action.

“Whether it’s a national disaster, whether it’s by nature like Katrina, or a flu pandemic or an earthquake, the Constitution can’t be thrown out the window,” said NRA leader Wayne LaPierre.

He said the NRA was outraged, and he warned that the organization would take its case all the way to Congress and president.

The East Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff’s Office had asked that guns be banned at the encampment because the trailers are close together and have thin walls, according to spokesman Deputy Fred Raiford.

“If a gun was discharged in any of those trailers, it probably would go through three or four other trailers before it stopped,” Raiford said.

But FEMA spokesman James McIntyre said guns would have been prohibited even without the Sheriff’s Office request.

The NRA USED to behave sensibly... way back when. Once they started going to Mars I left the organization and have no regrets. They USED to represent common sense in gun control... those days are LONG GONE.
This trailer park is a government run facility... as such... the government retains the right to make the rules... end of discussion.

    cheers,
    Paul

This was in the early eightys... their main thrust was safety through education and enforcement of existing laws. IMO at least it seems they deviated from this approach around 85' or so... and went down the road they are presently on... viewing everything as an attack on firearm ownership.
IMO at least the phrase about the right to 'keep and bear arms' is more specific to the times it was written. Bearing arms referring to military or militia service and since the government was quite young... many military or militia members had to provide their own weapons... hence the "keeping of arms". It wasn't until after the Civil War that you began to see larger numbers of Americans armed on a regular basis.

As far as the mobile home issue... they have no business having firearms in there. 1. It is a government ran operation... if they say no firearms... then they don't have to live there. 2. These folks need to be focusing on getting their lives back together... not on whether or not they have their guns.

    cheers,
    Paul
