Does anyone know of a federal or state law that requires banks to charge an "inactive fee" on a savings account that has been inactive for more than 18 months? I am being charged $5.00 by my bank because my savings account (although it has money in it) has been inactive for more than 18 months. Evidently, my savings account has been inactive for more than 5 years and therefore the bank has been milking it for $5.00 a month for the last 5 years. The only reason I set up a savings account with the bank was simply to have a cushion for overdraft protection (which I believe the bank itself requires for all checking accounts). This notion that the bank can charge me with an "inactive fee" sounds bogus. Is this a scam or what? Any input will be appreciated.

Thanks.
