    When Starbucks isn't Starbucks

I received a gold embossed STARBUCKS CARD as a gift for Christmas. The admonition on the card states “Treat this Card like cash” Oh really??!!

The very fine print on the back states that it may be used at “participating” Starbuck’s Stores. Guess who doesn’t participate? Just about every Starbucks store I might visit! To quote their website exactly (buried three levels down under FAQS).

At this time, the Starbucks Card is not accepted at all airport, grocery, bookstore, casino, university, and hotel locations; nor at stores in Puerto Rico or Guam.

When is Starbucks not Starbucks? Must be at the airport, at the bookstore, at the university, at the grocery, at the casino, and at the hotel. Where might I find thee...let me count the ways...

    Shame on you Starbucks.

    Scam outed.

I see two options for you...option 1...cut up the card, and mail it to their corporate offices (with a creativly worded note of course) But that would not be nice to the person that got you the card...Option 2...Find any "freestanding" Starbucks and enjoy your gift...

    Re: When Starbucks isn't Starbucks

i've been to hundreds of starbucks around the US, Canada and France and I have never once had a problem with a gift card. This includes freestanding stores, little kiosk style places at airports, train stations and a couple of universities. And to top that off, I always paid with a gift card I got in the US (just a magnetic strip with some information on it, so I can't imagine why it wouldn't work as long as it's a standardized system).

    You're just unlucky, i guess =/

Then again, you could be one of those types of people that throw a fit when you can not use your credit card to buy a bag of peanuts when the power is out... lol =P (happens way more than you might think)

Obviously whether Starbucks honors their gift cards or not isn’t world peace, but we did want to “test” the value of the site with a real example. We were curious as to the quality, character, and usefulness of replies.

One was entirely civil, though the answer was self evident..…no complaints there…..the “practical” solution was self evident! Go where it will be honored. It was only “off” in that the card did not deliver as promised and the consumer was the one who had to “fix the problem” by going out of her way. None the less a thoughtful reply.

One comment from a “senior member: was derisive. If this is a typical reply from him, the moderators should have had helped him long ago understand forum good practice, or barred him before he “earned” any status. Allowing belittling replies discourages rational dialog and invites personal attacks.

One comment from a member was OK, but he couldn’t resist the “maybe you are a nut job” close. It was done for humor, but it had a nasty little bite to it. Too bad, because that sours an otherwise reasonable reply and invites a negative response. Not what you want on a serious forum.

    One comment was incomprehensible

The “right answer,” which no one got, is the most simple. If the customer returned the card to Starbucks, they would have been given a full refund. Starbucks wants happy customers!

We can all learn from our mistakes, so here is the opportunity!:

    Thanks for your time! Bye!

Since you said bye bye, I shall assume that you won't be reading this...But, that was pretty sneaky of you (dastardly/underhanded) That said, you would have to know the people who answered, why they choose to post:crazy1:, and the way that they interact with each other before you can truly judge the responses (and judge you did) So, should I now boycott Starbucs because they use questionable tactics? Well, should I:rotz:

Maybe the real "right answer" should be that Starbucks should be clearer about the right answer. Why not state it on the card so people don't have to GUESS the right answer??

    Your card states:

At this time, the Starbucks Card is not accepted at all airport, grocery, bookstore, casino, university, and hotel locations; nor at stores in Puerto Rico or Guam.

So why not add to that:

At this time, the Starbucks Card is not accepted at all airport, grocery, bookstore, casino, university, and hotel locations; nor at stores in Puerto Rico or Guam. If you have no local stand alone Starbucks in your area you may return the card to Starbucks headquarters for a full refund.

Now THAT would be really showing that Starbucks wants a happy customer and that they don't have to complete a maze to get to that end.
