A Caveat Emptor for AT&T DSL Service

For those that live in the South, or any of the 22 states involved in the AT&T/BellSouth take over area, don't fall for their massive advertising campaign for DSL service.

It's AT&T's Latest and most shameless ripoff attempt !! They are advertising basic DSL internet service for $19.95 a month and claiming it to be a special limited time offer. Their ads all have toll free numbers to encourage sign ups. If you fall for their latest advertising hype, you will end up paying double what you are suppose to.

What they are not telling the public is the following: In short, as part of AT&T's concession agreement with the FCC to take over BellSouth, they agreed to make basic DSL service available to all new subscribers in all 22 states involved in the takeover for the price of $10.00 a month for the next 30 months.

Be aware, once you sign up at $19.95 you are no longer considered a new custoner and can't go back to the $10.00 price. That is the shameless rip off attempt !

To confirm what I am telling you to be accurate, go to their web site and look for a "term contract plans" link to reveal the details. My guess is, the reason they are telling people to call a toll free number to sign up is because this information is pretty well hidden and they won't tell you about it over the phone.

Link to the $10.00 plan for the lazy: http://www.bellsouth.com/consumer/inetsrvcs/index.html

Once you are there, go to the bottom section of the page and click on a link called "term contract plans available". The link takes you to a HTML PUBLIC document written to prevent posting a direct link.

Re: A Caveat Emptor fot AT&T DSL Service

UPDATE: Found a direct link to the $10.00 DSL plan. Anyone considering AT&T's basic DSL service needs to take a look before calling one of AT&T's toll free numbers to sign up.

    http://www.bellsouth.com/consumer/in...plans_pop.html

The rub, and possible legal loophole they are using to prevent having to honor their agreement with the FCC is in the second sentence. Order service online (Note: This offer is not available by calling AT&T.)

Anyone else think this is why all their current ads say to call to sign up, or is it just the little yellow man in my head ?

BTW, anyone signed at $19.95 tried to switch back to the $10.00 plan with any success ?
