Holding a Mortgage Someone Else is Paying On?

    Hi,
I have a quick question for you guys. We sold our house some months ago and since then we keep getting notes and postcards in the mail that say something along these lines:

"I understand you are holding a mortgage that Xxxxxx Xxxxx (name of home buyer) is making payments on. I would like to buy your note for cash.

    Call Xxxxx Xxxxxxxx 777-777-7777"

I don't get these letters and the realtor I asked had never heard of it before. Does anyone know anything about this?

    "Call Xxxxx Xxxxxxxx 777-777-7777"

Did you search their name or phone number on the web?

There are few "programs" out there that promise to get you rich for finding mortgage notes and listing them on "program" websites that will find "buyers". This, of cause, is a baloney. Few people are buying mortgage notes(especially now). But "program" pushers do not care. They are just for sign-up fees and selling leads(like your info).

You got on the lead list for one of those "programs".

To be on the safe side pull your 3 credit reports.
    https://www.annualcreditreport.com

You can look on the site for the Toll free numbers or use the site to
get them. Identity theft is a big issue these days. This may not be a case,
    but CYA.....

Sorry if I sound dumb, but I don't see what looking up my credit report would do.

I did Google their name and all I could find was that they signed some petition in Arizona to keep religion out of schools (or something like that).

I was never thinking that it was legitimate or that we would get any money. We've been getting these for months now and I always throw them away. My concern is that maybe our name is still somehow connected to the mortgage at our old house even though we sold it and should have nothing to do with it or the buyer anymore. I just don't get why we're getting notes about our old house at all when we should have no connection to their mortgage. I just don't want to find out later that we are somehow still responsible for their payments if they don't make them or something.

Unless you did "assume the mortgage" sale, I do not see how it would be possible. To be safe check with company/bank that originated/owned your mortgage.
