    Jerry Falwell has died

    Can't say I'll miss him.

    http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/americas/6659457.stm

    Some of his lovely quotes

'I hope I live to see the day when, as in the early days of our country, we won't have any public schools. The churches will have taken them over again and Christians will be running them. What a happy day that will be!" - Rev. Jerry Falwell.

"AIDS is not just God's punishment for homosexuals; it is God's punishment for the society that tolerates homosexuals." - Rev. Jerry Falwell.

"It appears that America's anti-Biblical feminist movement is at last dying, thank God, and is possibly being replaced by a Christ-centered men's movement which may become the foundation for a desperately needed national spiritual awakening." - Rev. Jerry Falwell.

"The Bible is the inerrant ... word of the living God. It is absolutely infallible, without error in all matters pertaining to faith and practice, as well as in areas such as geography, science, history, etc." - Rev. Jerry Falwell

"The ACLU is to Christians what the American Nazi party is to Jews." - Rev. Jerry Falwell

“Christians, like slaves and soldiers, ask no questions” - Rev. Jerry Falwell

“The idea that religion and politics don't mix was invented by the Devil to keep Christians from running their own country” - Rev. Jerry Falwell

    “If you're not a born-again Christian, you're a failure as a human being” - Rev. Jerry Falwell

“Textbooks are Soviet propaganda” - Rev. Jerry Falwell

“[homosexuals are] brute beasts...part of a vile and satanic system [that] will be utterly annihilated, and there will be a celebration in heaven.” - Rev. Jerry Falwell
Close your eyes, but keep your mind wide open.

    Re: Jerry Falwell has died

    Oh! That is good news!

"Falwell's long career was marked by inflammatory attacks on liberals, Jews, Muslims, blacks, homosexuals, women's activists and civil rights organizations.

Two days after the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks on the United States, he blamed "the pagans, and the abortionists, and the feminists, and the gays and the lesbians ... who have tried to secularize America."

A year later he called Muslim prophet Mohammad "a terrorist", to which Iranian Ayatollah Ali Khameini responded with a fatwa command for Falwell's death.

Writing in the Catholic New Times in 2004, retired Catholic Bishop John Shelby Spong, who led Lynchburg-area churches in the 1960s, recalled Falwell as a "race-baiting segregationist" who praised South Africa's apartheid regime as the "bulwark for Christian civilization" and branded black rights activist Nelson Mandela a "communist".

Falwell came under fire from fellow Christian leaders when he accepted several million dollars from South Korean evangelist Sun Myung Moon, who calls himself God's modern prophet.

Never far from controversy, Falwell lost a Supreme Court case in 1988 over the pornographic Hustler magazine's 1983 parody of him which became a landmark ruling for press freedom. (see below)

In 1999, he shot back to international headlines when he warned that Tinky Winky, a character in the popular BBC children's television show Teletubbies, might be gay.

But his opponents consider his most outrageous words to have been his comments after the September 11 attacks.

"The abortionists have got to bear some burden for this because God will not be mocked. And when we destroy 40 million little innocent babies, we make God mad."

Naming feminists, civil rights activists, and Democratic party groups, he said, "I point the finger in their face and say: you helped this happen."

This is another stellar example of religious hate at its finest. If there is a god, I'm sure he has reserved a special place in Hell for Jerry Falwell, right next to all the other lunatics, bigots, and psychos.

    Hustler vs Falwell
The Hustler parody featured a picture of Falwell, and an "interview" in which "Falwell" describes his first sexual experience as occurring “with Mom” in an outhouse while both were "drunk off our God-fearing asses on Campari." In the spoof interview, "Falwell" goes on to say that he was so intoxicated that "Mom looked better than a Baptist wh0re with a $100 donation," that he decided to have sex with his mother since she had "showed all the other guys in town such a good time," and that they had intercourse regularly afterwards. Finally, when asked if he had tried Campari since, "Falwell" answered, "I always get sloshed before I go out to the pulpit. You don’t think I could lay down all that bullsh!t sober, do you?"

The Supreme Court ruled in favor of Hustler and America survived another right-wing conservative attack on our freedom of speech.

Falwell was a man guided by the fundamentalist sect of a revealed religion "Christianity". He religious faith was extremely exclusionary espousing that if one did not accept Jesus as their personal savior they were damned to hell......that is hurtful and discusting just like all "revealed" religions are, by asserting that any human being has the capacity to understand lifes ultimate purpose and meaning.

I believe in a "creator" force but I feel that Christianity, Judaism, Islam are all set up as a control apparatus.

Fundamentalists recognize Falwell in the Evangelical camp.

He did make some disastrous mistakes. Like borrowing money to buy way too much property for Liberty University.

But he did get a lot right, particularly your second sentence. Thank the Lord he didn't waver in that one.

Interestingly enough, Flynt and Falwell eventually became friends. From an article written by Flynt in the LA Times after Falwell's death:

"In the years that followed and up until his death, he'd come to see me every time he was in California. We'd have interesting philosophical conversations. We'd exchange personal Christmas cards. He'd show me pictures of his grandchildren. I was with him in Florida once when he complained about his health and his weight, so I suggested that he go on a diet that had worked for me. I faxed a copy to his wife when I got back home.

The truth is, the reverend and I had a lot in common. He was from Virginia, and I was from Kentucky. His father had been a bootlegger, and I had been one too in my 20s before I went into the Navy. We steered our conversations away from politics, but religion was within bounds. He wanted to save me and was determined to get me out of "the business."

My mother always told me that no matter how repugnant you find a person, when you meet them face to face you will always find something about them to like. The more I got to know Falwell, the more I began to see that his public portrayals were caricatures of himself. There was a dichotomy between the real Falwell and the one he showed the public."

I meet him once and I too couldn't imagine him being the same person that was being reported to on the news. People do change, and in person you do tend to see the side that don't make the news. Maybe had I known all that was told about him, I would have steered away, but he was introduced to us and he seemed a godly man.

@Gollygee, If that was you who died, would we wish that you were gone and have your family sobbing your death? I don\'t think so. Maybe his time came about, but nobody wishes death upon another. I\'d ask you to rethink your thoughts and post something more sensible.

Oh I disagree. Jerry Fallwell was adamant that the WTC deaths were the fault of Godless americans. He was practically cheering when New Orleans, that hive of scum and villainy was wiped off the map, and I can go on citing times when he not only cheered on innocent deaths, but seemed quite happy with Gods vengeance against America.

While I tend not to speak ill of the dead, this "oh poor Jerry Falwell" attitude is nauseating.

So do you think if you run into OJ on the golf course you'll ask him to autograph your glove?

To some people, death is the best thing. That Robertson and his TV program, makes me sick, one peek of him and the clicker starts working real fast, rather watch something else or nothing at all.
