Tigers are don't live in Africa....

    Tigers.

Not native to Africa, but to India, right?

However, could tigers survive/thrive in Africa?

Seems to me that they could.

    Climate is warm.

Plenty of other mammals to eat.

Wonder if this has ever been tried?

    Anyone know?

    Cheers

I think the only reason Tigers havent migrated down into africa is partially due to the environment between India and Africa. They would have to cross the middle east and tigers are not so suited to desert life.

If they did make it to Africa there would be more cometition for food, in India they are at the top of the food chain, whereas in Africa there would be heynas, lions, and cheatas to compete with.

    just a thought

I suppose they would have to have a 'cause' to migrate there in the first place, for example, if there was a sudden lack of suitable food in India.

Question is, while not suited to desert life, could they cope with the journey, and how long would it take them to make it?

They do, however, seem to survive quite well here.

Brrrr, looks cold! Of course, I would not support an artificial introduction into Africa, for the reasons that you state, however, I don't think they would by any means be the first animal or insect to be (either on purpose, or by accident), introduced to a new terrain.

If I wasn't so tired, I could think of a few examples, but fire ants are one, and I am sure that rats were not indigenuous to Austrailia.

Was that not why mixamatosis (sp?), was once introduced, and then not used?

Yeah they have quite a problem with Bullfrogs there now too.

I also read in interesting storey about how someone found some sea monster that walked up onto the land that turned out to be the last few of a colony of Canadian Moose that was brought there a hundred years ago.

You just try to bring something organic into Austrialia now. They are a little paranoid, and rightfully so.

If Africa doesn't have tigers, I don't think it would be a good idea to colonize them there. They would most likely compete for food with other predators like lions. That could hurt the lion population even more.
