    $$$$$$$ hungry sears

i am writing for my parents who are seniors. my dad had a stroke seven years ago and is in a home paralyzed and unable to talk or communicate. my mother live by her self. she has been paying what she can on a sears card that he bought some things with, over seven years ago. she does not know what he bought. what ever it was it has been paid for. maybe a chainsaw and some other tools. were not sure. nothing major like an appliance. we contacted sears and explained this to them. knowing that my mother is just paying on the principle, which can go on for ever, sears says they can do nothing? my mom is on disability and lives on a fixed income. her house is worth maybe thirty thousand. they have no money. yet she pays and pays. sears is milking her. my sister and i have called sears over and over again, they just pass the buck. my mom has gotten the power of attorney over my dad to try and find out what she is paying on, and how long it has been paid off. sears told her if she sto ps making payments they can take the house. I'm wondering if any one out there has any advise for my mother? maybe some one she can contact other then big corporate sears. thanks a bunch. Tim Peterson, tn.

When you purchase from Sears, unlike buying with Master Card or VISA, it's a secured debt. So, they can't come take the house but they can put a lein on it.

Sears can do something but what you need to find is a debt advocate, like a debt counseling service there who can negociate with them. If she has a Mastercard or VISA she can transfer the debt to and stops paying. It's unsecured debt. About all they can do is hound you with bill collectors and put a black mark on your credit report. Maybe get a judgment against you and garnish something depending on the state you live in.

I would get the POA and then seek counseling to have the debt removed or expunged.

    Here's a thought.
..presuming that the "bill" shows balance information.

Why not simply help out your parents?
I help out mine (help pay their bills) all the time.

If it's a thousand dollars. Or five. Why not just help pay it off?
