Here's how it works...

Upon arrival at your hotel, you give the front desk your credit card to cover changes. Later, the phone rings and the caller says: “This is front desk. There is a problem with your credit card. Can you please repeat your information and verify the last 3 digits?”

Of course, it is NOT front desk calling you, but a scammer who called the hotel and asked to be put through to your room! Hotel operators are not supposed to transfer calls unless the name of the guest is supplied, but experts warn that this precaution is not always honored, especially during busy times.

What can you do to protect yourself?

NEVER give out your card number over the phone. Tell the caller you’ll come down to the front desk in the morning to clear up any problems. If there was no problem, inform the management of the attempted scam.
