Stop the craziness in the Middle East

    My Dear Friends,

Following is an urgent letter from my close friend and wonderful associate, Rabbi Michael Lerner. I would be so very, very appreciative if you could take just the moment it will require to read through this. Thank you so very much.

    With love,
    Neale.

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------

Dear Friends of Neale Donald Walsch,

The violence in the Middle East is horrific for Israelis, Lebanese, and Palestinians.

Unfortunately, President Bush still supports Israel's intention to keep the violence going by not seeking a full-scale cease fire until Israel has militarily "stabilized" the situation by defeating Hezbollah. And since such defeat is not likely, the violence will continue, even though there is now a 48 hour air-war truce while fighting continues on the ground.

We at the Tikkun Community and our interfaith organization The Network of Spiritual Progressives (www.spiritualprogressives.org) are trying to put a different message out: that Americans want an end to the violence and, once and for all, a resolution of this conflict, not only with Lebanon and Israel, but also with Israel and Palestine, and Israel and all the states of the region. We've developed an ad to put in the NY Times and in other American media, as well as in Israeli, Lebanese, and Palestinian newspapers.

So far, we've gotten some 2,000 signatures and raised about $52,000, but we need to raise another $12,000 to get the ad into the Times, and from there we are hoping to raise another $50,000 to be able to put it into the Israeli, Palestinian and Lebanese media.

We need your support. Would you please go to our website at www.tikkun.org/PeaceAd and read the ad (it appears at first very small, but use your computer skills to enlarge it - its actual size will be a full page in the NY Times, 13 inches wide by 21 inches deep), sign the ad, and donate to make it possible for us to get this ad printed. If you prefer to send a check, send it to Tikkun Middle East Peace Ad, c/o Tikkun, 2342 Shattuck Ave, Suite 1200, Berkeley, California 94704. If you need more info, call Mark at 510 644 1200.

This is a terribly painful moment for all of us who want to build a world based on the recognition of the equal sanctity of all human beings. But it is also an amazing opportunity for us to jump beyond the current "cynical realism" and change the discourse to one that is hopeful and visionary. And that is exactly why the ad goes beyond the present situation and presents a new vision of how to do foreign policy and how to build a world of love. If you like the ideas in the ad, you may also like the ideas in my new book The Left Hand of God: Taking Back our Country from the
Religious Right (HarperSanFrancisco, 2006). If your local bookstore doesn't carry it, you can order it through them or through Amazon.com. If you like the book, I'd also like to invite you to join our interfaith organization, The Network of Spiritual Progressives—a movement that seeks a New Bottom Line of love and generosity in American society.

But the first step is our campaign to stop the craziness in the Middle East and turn this into an occasion for a renewed commitment of the world's peoples to our highest ideals.

Help us out by going to www.tikkun.org/PeaceAd and signing and donating!

    Love and blessings,

    Rabbi Michael Lerner

    The BIG ONE...?

    Just wondering where everybody is......?

LONDON - British authorities said Thursday they thwarted a terrorist plot to simultaneously blow up 10 aircraft heading to the U.S. using explosives smuggled in hand luggage, averting what police described as “mass murder on an unimaginable scale.”

Some plotters had already purchased tickets on a flight to stage a test run planned for this weekend. The test run would have determined how easily the plotters could have gotten their materials past security and on board the planes.

The actual attack would have followed within days.

    .................................................. ...........................................

    Updated: 2:02 p.m. ET Aug 10, 2006
The plot had been in the works for months, and its goal was horrific. One after another, planes would have exploded in the sky, sending hundreds of men, women and children to their deaths.

Counterterrorism officials said Thursday the plan thwarted in London appears to bear the fingerprints of al-Qaida, and may even have been “the Big One” they have been dreading since Sept. 11, 2001, particularly as the five-year anniversary of the attacks on the United States approaches.

More than 20 people have been arrested, terror threat levels have been raised to some of their highest levels and hundreds of flights have been canceled worldwide.

    .................................................. ...........................................

The view from the nation's capitalPosted by Tom Costello, Correspondent (01:17 pm ET, 08/10/06)
Here in Washington, D.C., tens of thousands of people showed up at Reagan National Airport this morning... many in flip flops and summer-wear, preparing for a plane ride to a much-anticipated summer vacation... only to be met by some of the longest security lines since 9/11.

TSA officers and agents made their way through the security lines, passing out flyers advising passengers of the new rules. No liquids means no Starbucks, no sodas, no toothpaste, hair gel, shampoo, even suntan lotion.

As television monitors blared the news of the arrests in the U.K., passengers seemed to immediately understand the gravity of the threat and complied without complaint. Nearly five years since 9/11, with wars in Afghanistan, Iraq and the Middle East raging, Americans have become very accustomed to sacrificing personal freedom and conveniences in the name of security. The collective wish among everyone traveling today is that law enforcement on both sides of the Atlantic will continue to be good -- and lucky -- in breaking apart terrorist cells before they can strike.

    .................................................. ...........................................

    Alerts raised worldwide
News of the arrests and extreme security measures in London, a major international aviation hub, sent ripples throughout the world. Heathrow was closed to most flights from Europe, and British Airways canceled all its flights between the airport and points in Britain, Europe and Libya. Numerous flights from U.S. cities to Britain were canceled.

Washington raised its threat alert to its highest level for commercial flights from Britain to the United States amid fears the plot had not been completely crushed.

Is your statement intended to imply this is a staged event?

Made me feel very cynical. Maybe it was just the wording, but it read like a line directly out of 1984. If we are lucky, they will parade the traitors through the streets and we can all yell hateful things at them?

our world is becoming more dangferous all the time. The threat is ever present. We have to be willing to give up our freedoms constantly so we can be kept safe from 'them'.

    I'm not completely convinced.

The line does seem a bit over the top... dramatically. But then it was written by a reporter... that's his job (to be dramatic that is).
A little cynicism can be a good thing... it keeps one thinking and watching.

It is a shame that all of the media is presented by reportors. And that all arguments on this forum and everywhere else on earth seem to be supported by the reportings of said reporters.

We are a world of 'well informed' individuals thanks to the internet and instant satelite feeds etc. its a shame that we are well informed with what we are told though, and that there doesn't seem to be a real method for moderating that telling.

The information revolution. Its all just spam. Wow that's depressing.

I think todays happenings or near miss should show people that there is a real
downside to allowing other cultures to take over ones country. It is the fruit
of "diversity" gone amuck. Its coming back to bite them!

yes. thats it. We need to firmly draw the Us and Them lines in the map again. We need something definite this time. What can we use to firmly establish what constitutes an US and what constitutes a THEM??

Damn, we need to meet some Aliens with tentacles or something so this would be much easier. Then we could call the Aliens THEM and wage war on them. And thus safely secure in our USness.

We dont need to wage war on anyone, just have borders that actually work to
keep out people who wish to kill us or at the very least turn our country into
the thrid world country they came from.
Where is there a problem in that?

But your very own words reveal the truth of your heart. 'They' wish to kill us. 'They' wish to turn our country into a third world country. 'They' are against 'Us' and what sort of 'Us' do you think we are that we would stand for such action from 'Them'?

No, I will not tolerate for one more moment 'Them' wishing ill upon 'us'. We must atttack now! Remove them so that we can continue to live in peace. because we are a peaceful us. they...they are evil.

Us have always been peaceful. They have always been an evil, warmongering, immoral and hateful people.

Leider, it is but human nature, and our world is too big for our tiny brains to comprehend that its circumstances are no longer tribal.

    *Leider = german for unfortunately.

If only it were so simple...do you really think the ACLU would not be ALL OVER the anti-alien sentiment and leveling charges left and right?

You see...we DO have a rather easily identifiable enemy. Why? Because he identifies himself with inpunity!! Why? Because we him them as comfortable as we possibly can. It is simply verboten to speak his name(ISLAM), or point a finger at the guy with the bomb and the shoulder-chip(male between ages of 18 and 30).

This is why your mom will be cavity-searched while Achmed gets a pass because we checked more than 3 of 8 previous mid-eastern males and we musn't appear to be profiling. Fighting terrorism in Liberalton ain't easy.
