The cross from the altar area of the chapel at the College of William & Mary in Williamsburg, Va., has been removed to ensure the space is seen as a nondenominational area, explains administrator Melissa Engimann.

"In order to make the Wren Chapel less of a faith-specific space, and to make it more welcoming to students, faculty, staff and visitors of all faiths, the cross has been removed from the altar area," Engimann announced in an e-mail to staff.

The cross will be returned to the altar for those who wish to use it for events, services or private prayer, the campus newspaper, the Flat Hat, reported.

The college was formerly associated with the Anglican Church. Since 1906, the college has been non-denominational and publicly supported. Though the cross will be removed, the room will still be considered a chapel, college officials said.

what's the big deal? its just a symbol that represents a group of people's mythology? if it is deemed as non-denominational, take the cross down and chop it up...im sure someone could use it for a bonfire or something.

The point is it is a chapel, which means a church, which usually means a cross! If somebody doesn't believe in god, why are they going to a chapel anyway. It's their perogative to go somewhere else and nobody is forcing them to go to the chapel.

This is ridiculous, but not a shocker. Reinforces the notion of the Godless Left.

Ya know, they could go the other way and add a six pointed star, a crescent, and a brass statue of Buddha.

Exactly. And why not a pentagram while they're at it? In fact, why not a framed picture of a 7-year-old boy performing sex acts on a middle-aged man? I'd hate to think they've been discriminating against the pederast community all these years.

    and whats the problem????

here are definition for the word "chapel"...youll find only 3 that refer to a church.

    1. a private or subordinate place of prayer or worship; oratory.
    2. a separately dedicated part of a church, or a small independent churchlike edifice, devoted to special services.
    3. a room or building for worship in an institution, palace, etc.
    4. (in Great Britain) a place of worship for members of various dissenting Protestant churches, as Baptists or Methodists.
    5. a separate place of public worship dependent on the church of a parish.
    6. a religious service in a chapel: Don't be late for chapel!
    7. a funeral home or the room in which funeral services are held.
    8. a choir or orchestra of a chapel, court, etc.
    9. a print shop or printing house.
    10. an association of employees in a print shop for dealing with their interests, problems, etc.
–verb (used with object) 11. Nautical. to maneuver (a sailing vessel taken aback) by the helm alone until the wind can be recovered on the original tack.

also do some research into how many christians there are at william and mary before you make a judgement.

LOL.... when do we get a thread titled "pwrone removes cross - from rectum"?

Just one question... Is it better to remove a cross from a College building or have all religions place their golden calves and graven images throughout our Learning Institutions?

I have no problem with each religion having their own chapel on a college campus. We do have the right of Free Exercise of religion in this country.
