Global Warming - worse than we thought?

Read a couple of articles today, different media websites, but similar claims about accelerated warming. Terrifying stuff. Now, reading these articles, I'm genuinely interested to know what people think ... are these articles exaggerations, or do people think we really are in deep shite? I suspect the latter myself.

Along with the Arctic ice, the rich world's smugness will melt

The belief that Europe and America will be hit least by climate change is in ruins. Yet all we do is try to profit from disaster

There are no comparisons to be made. This is not like war or plague or a stockmarket crash. We are ill-equipped, historically and psychologically, to understand it, which is one of the reasons why so many refuse to accept that it is happening.

What we are seeing, here and now, is the transformation of the atmospheric physics of this planet. Three weeks before the likely minimum, the melting of Arctic sea ice has already broken the record set in 2007. The daily rate of loss is now 50% higher than it was that year. The daily sense of loss – of the world we loved and knew – cannot be quantified so easily.

The Arctic has been warming roughly twice as quickly as the rest of the northern hemisphere. This is partly because climate breakdown there is self-perpetuating. As the ice melts, for example, exposing the darker sea beneath, heat that would previously have been reflected back into space is absorbed.

This great dissolution, of ice and certainties, is happening so much faster than most climate scientists predicted that one of them reports: "It feels as if everything I've learned has become obsolete." In its last assessment, published in 2007, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change noted that "in some projections, Arctic late-summer sea ice disappears almost entirely by the latter part of the 21st century". These were the most extreme forecasts in the panel's range. Some scientists now forecast that the disappearance of Arctic sea-ice in late summer could occur in this decade or the next.

Our governments do nothing. Having abandoned any pretence of responding to the environmental crisis during the Earth summit in June, now they stare stupidly as the ice on which we stand dissolves. Nothing – or worse than nothing. Their one unequivocal response to the melting has been to facilitate the capture of the oil and fish it exposes.

Global Warming and Carbon Dioxide Ethics

Humanity is converting the Earth into a gas chamber by pouring lethal amounts of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. The consequences are profound: Scientists estimate that in less than a single lifetime from now, we will be living in a planet far different from anything that our ancestors have experienced over the past two million years. Bill McKibben's widely read article, "Global Warming's Terrifying New Math," tells our story with the stark simplicity of three numbers:
    • Global warming by 2 degrees Centigrade or 3.6 Fahrenheit is considered the threshold for catastrophe by the vast majority of the scientific community. This is a key tipping point. To cross the 2-degree threshold is to place humanity's future in grave danger.
    • We will rapidly reach this threshold if we place more than an additional 565 gigatons of carbon dioxide into the Earth's atmosphere. At current rates, we will reach this level within 16 years! Indeed, we are now on a nightmare track to raise the Earth's temperature by 6 degrees Centigrade or nearly 11 degrees Fahrenheit by the end of this century.
    • The third critical number is the amount of carbon dioxide contained in the proven coal, oil, and gas reserves remaining in the ground. Companies and countries rich with these fossil fuels are planning to burn an astonishing five times more than the critical threshold of carbon dioxide or nearly 2,800 gigatons.
How does mainstream science interpret these numbers? The following quotes are taken from the highly respected scientific journal, Nature. "The mean global temperature by 2070 (or a few decades earlier) will be higher than it ever has since the human species evolved."

I am so glad I live in Canada.

If its normally -25C outside I always ask "Where's this global warming everyone is talking about? We could use some more... "

I live at a high elevation too. Rising oceans don't bother me any.

Go ahead coastal areas. Flood your cities. My property is about to be worth a lot more!

    We're in deep shit.

    Well, you are.

I live in a part of the world that's predicted to have warmer, sunnier, nicer summers, snowier white christmases, and going to be able to grow a lot more types of food.

Seriously though, things are happening A LOT faster than even the most dire of predictions out of the IPCC. The big unknown is methane release from frozen permafrost, both above and below the sea. It's happening already, we just don't know how much might be released and how quickly. It can change things very very very rapidly.

Here in Scotland we are unlikely to disappear under water either, but London ... shame.

    But seriously, it's not good.

    Here's the DailyMail's graphs:

Yep. If you look here, the temperature now is about the same as 10 years ago. But let's look further.

Both graphs have instantaneous temperatures around the same as now as 10-15 years ago. Looking further, I shouldn't have to explain much more. Also, which graph do you trust more? One from the NOAA or one from "BEN WELLER" that is completely uncited by the Mail?

And here's the Met Office's response, which calls Mr Rose's article "misleading".

    From the above article;

Met Office in the Media: 14 October 2012

An article by David Rose appears today in the Mail on Sunday under the title: ‘Global warming stopped 16 years ago, reveals Met Office report quietly released… and here is the chart to prove it’

It is the second article Mr Rose has written which contains some misleading information, after he wrote an article earlier this year on the same theme – you see our response to that one here.

To address some of the points in the article published today:

Firstly, the Met Office has not issued a report on this issue. We can only assume the article is referring to the completion of work to update the HadCRUT4 global temperature dataset compiled by ourselves and the University of East Anglia’s Climate Research Unit.

We announced that this work was going on in March and it was finished this week. You can see the HadCRUT4 website here.

Secondly, Mr Rose says the Met Office made no comment about its decadal climate predictions. This is because he did not ask us to make a comment about them.

You can see our full response to all of the questions Mr Rose did ask us below:

    (click link for full article)

And thanks to Theo over at TechIMO for the below graphic illustration from boingboing.

Ignorance more frequently begets confidence than does knowledge: it is those who know little, and not those who know much, who so positively assert that this or that problem will never be solved by science. -C. Darwin

I think misleading is an understatment.

The daily mail called the met office got and explination of what was happening.

Then they ignored EVERYTHING the Met office said, cited an imaginary report and claimed the MET office as it's source.

I think that boarders on liable.

I'd like to Thank Philliper for pointing out there increadable case of journalistic incompentence..... that was the reason he were posting right?

Re: Global Warming - worse than we thought?

It is clearly the sun driving our climate, not man made CO2. This data comes from the IPCC (The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change) and NASA. There is clearly a much closer correlation between Solar activity (Sunspots, solar flares, etc., ...) than there is between CO2 and Earth's average temperature.
