More guns = less mass killings

So we've heard the argument made that if everyone is armed, then a mass-shooting can't occur. However, take a look at what happened in New York the other day:

A man shot and killed a former coworker and then attempted to flee the scene. Two police officers fired 16 rounds at him. While they managed to kill him, they also managed to wound nine (yes nine!) other people with those 16 rounds.

Imagine what would happen if everyone was carrying a gun and started shooting?

Weak and ineffective gun laws = more gun deaths, and more gun injuries.

Great percent ownership of guns within a population = more gun deaths, and more gun injuries.

Weak and ineffective gun laws + Great percent ownership of guns within a population = more gun deaths, and more gun injuries.

We need to know if those deaths and injuries were in self defense.

It seems to me the NY Police Officers did not handle the situation in the best way.

The Police Officers had a witness of a shooting point out the shooter of a crime that had just taken place but should the police have confronted an armed man who just shot another man when there were so many bystanders around?

Also does it take sixteen shots to stop a guy with a gun drawn, when so many innocent people are near by?

Wonder how the Police are trained to handle this kind of situation.

I also wondered if becasue the Police Officers were guarding the Empire State Building, they may have had mass killing or a terrorist in mind when this man was pointed out to them as having a gun and shooting someone.

It's apparently very hard to hit someone when you are under pressure. It's not like at a shooting range. This study looks at a number of police firing statistics. At a distance of 3 to 7 yards (ie. pretty close range) only 1 in 10 bullets fired by the NYC police will hit the target. Between 7 and 15 yards, it's only 1 bullet in 20.

And this is the NYC police - they are specifically trained for these situations. Just imagine what it would be like if every man and his dog pulled out a pistol and started shooting.

The Disconnect Between Range Marksmanship & Combat Hitsmanship

It has been assumed that if a man can hit a target at 50 yards he can certainly do the same at three feet. That assumption is not borne out by the reports.
(This is also the reason why people who say the police should shoot at the legs are misguided. If only one bullet in twenty is going to even hit the target, you can't just choose to hit the legs.)

Better gun laws reduce killing and injury.
