From CNN/AP: Rove Blasts Warrantless Wiretapping Decision.

TOLEDO, Ohio – Presidential adviser Karl Rove criticized a federal judge's order for an immediate end to the government's warrantless surveillance program, saying Wednesday such a program might have prevented the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks. Rove said the government should be free to listen if al Qaeda is calling someone within the U.S. "Imagine if we could have done that before 9/11. It might have been a different outcome," he said.

Anybody that has a basic understanding of how the NSA and other surveillance networks in the military have done their business knows that these orgs. have been monitoring communications both abroad and domestically for decades.
Before 9/11 the NSA through a tangle of alliances with hundreds of subcontractors have been diverting virtually all domestic communications for data mining.
One such contractor and Israeli firm has been monitoring cell phone communications and internet traffic here in the USA also long before 911.

Spy Agency Sought U.S. Call Records Before 9/11, Lawyers Say

    By Andrew Harris

June 30 (Bloomberg) -- The U.S. National Security Agency asked AT&T Inc. to help it set up a domestic call monitoring site seven months before the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks, lawyers claimed June 23 in court papers filed in New York federal court.

    NOTE: Also pre-911
The FBI had transcripts of tapes describing an attack using hijacked American aircraft.
They did nothing, they refused to pass the tapes off to a qualified Arabic language expert.
After the attacks when these tapes were reviewed by that same Arabic language expert it was clear that 911 could have been averted.

    I came accross this yesterday.

The Men Who Knew Too Much? NSA Wiretapping Whistleblowers Found Dead in Italy and Greece

Adamo Bove and Costas Tsalikidis: Both uncovered a secret bugging system and both met untimely ends. Was That Just A Coincidence? And Who Made Your Cell Phone?

    Guest blogged by Joseph Cannon

Is someone murdering people who know too much about NSA wiretapping overseas?

Two whistleblowers one in Italy, one in Greece uncovered a secret bugging system installed in cell phones around the world. Both met with untimely ends. The resultant scandals have received little press in the United States, despite the profound implications for American critics of the Bush administration.

Last month, Italian telecommunications security expert Adamo Bove either leapt or was pushed from a freeway overpass; he left no note and had no history of depression. Last year (March, 2005), Greek telecommunications expert Costas Tsalikidis met with a similarly enigmatic end. Both had uncovered American attempts to eavesdrop on government officials, anti-war activists, and private businessmen.

The Bove case relates to the long-standing controversy over the CIA's kidnapping of cleric Abu Omar, who was flown to Egypt and tortured. The post-Berlusconi government of Italy is attempting to arrest and try all of the CIA personnel involved. Bove used mobile phone records to trace more than two dozen American agents.

Bove had also revealed that his employer, Telecom Italia, had allowed illegal "spyware" undetectable wiretaps to infest Italy's largest communications system. His testimony helped to uncover the unsettling relationship between SISMI chief Marco Mancini and Telecom Italia head Giuliano Tavaroli. (Mancini, recently arrested by Italian investigators, has also come under some suspicion for his possible role in the strange affair of Major General Nicola Calipari, killed by American troops in Iraq.) In the 1990s, Bove had received wide praise for helping to secure convictions of two bosses in the Camorra, Naples' answer to the Sicilian Mafia.

    AnarchicOldGit,
    Thanks for the link.
    Excellent story.
I found a news story in the 90’s that I can’t seem to find today.
The NSA was lobbying PC manufactures to create a chip or software imbedded in all PC’s to create a backdoor for the NSA to easily hack any PC.
Also the NSA cancelled a contract with a Chinese PC manufacturer fearing that the Chinese would do the same.

    Another mysterious suicide:

Isn't that the one with the deal with Microsoft? My computer tech said any computer Pentium 4 and above already has the chip installed. It was part of the deal signed during negotiations or something like that a few years ago.

I think you are right about Microsoft, I do remember something about it.

Windows XP does a lot of phoning out. It has about six instances of "svhost" running at the same time.

To the rescue comes xp anti-spy, ta-da!

    http://www.xp-antispy.org/

    From the site:
The xp-AntiSpy is a little utility that lets you disable some built-in update and authentication 'features' in WindowsXP.

For example, there's a service running in the background which is called 'Automatic Updates'. I don't know what this service transfers from my machine to other machines on the internet, especially the MS ones. So I play it safe and disable such functions.

If you like, you can even disable these functions manually, by going through the System and checking or unchecking some checkboxes. This will take you approximately half an hour. But why wast time when a little neat utility can do the same in 1 minute?

This utility was successfully tested by lots of users, and was found to disable all the known 'Suspicious' Functions in WindowsXP. It's customiseable, but comes up with the Default settings, which are recommended.

    http://www.xp-antispy.org/

I use it myself and have no problems with it.
