I saw that the other day and laughed. We were definitely tougher kids.

It's funny but it's also important to realize what a different world we live in today.

I grew up in Southern Cali.. From kindergarten on, myself and my friends played in the streets and never had to worry. Our parents could send us out with a lunch sack and say "see you at dinner time".

Now I live in a relatively quiet and crime free area... my youngest daughter is 11 and just TODAY is the first time EVER that she has asked and been allowed to ride her bike the five blocks to her school to play with her friends..

It's not just me, it's the other parents as well. The rules for her going was to meet up with her friend from around the corner and to go together and the only reason this happened is because they BOTH have cell phones.

It's crazy and I get that, but over the past few years we have had at least ONE attempted child abduction per year in the neighborhood and it's a SAFE area where we all know each other.

There are just too many crazies out there these days and it sucks.. I want my daughter to be able to have the same childhood I had and that her siblings had who are all 13 years or more her senior but it's just not the same world..

    To All The Kids Who Survived The 1930's 40's, 50's, 60's and 70's !!

First, we survived being born to mothers who smoked and/or drank while they carried us.
They took aspirin, ate blue cheese dressing and didn't get tested for diabetes.
Then after that trauma, our baby cribs were covered with bright colored lead-based paints.
We had no childproof lids on medicine bottles, doors or cabinets and when we rode our bikes, we had no helmets, not to mention, the risks we took hitchhiking.
As children, we would ride in cars with no seat belts or air bags.
Riding in the back of a pick up on a warm day was always a special treat.
We drank water from the garden hose and not from a bottle.
We shared one soft drink with four friends, from one bottle and NO ONE actually died from this.
We ate cupcakes, bread and butter and drank soda pop with sugar in it, but we weren't overweight because we were always outside playing.
We would leave home in the morning and play all day, as long as we were back when the streetlights came on.
No one was able to reach us all day. And we were O.K.
We would spend hours building our go-carts out of scraps and then ride down the hill, only to find out we forgot the brakes. After running into the bushes a few times, we learned to solve the problem.
We did not have Playstations, Nintendo's, X-boxes, no video games at all, no 99 channels on cable, no video tape movies, no surround sound, no cell phones, no personal computers, no Internet or Internet chat rooms...we had friends and we went outside and found them!
We fell out of trees, got cut, broke bones and teeth and there were no lawsuits from these accidents.
We made up games with sticks and tennis balls and ate worms and although we were told it would happen, we did not put out very many eyes, nor did the worms live in us forever.
We rode bikes or walked to a friend's house and knocked on the door or rang the bell, or just walked in and talked to them!
Little League had tryouts and not everyone made the team. Those who didn't had to learn to deal with disappointment. Imagine that!!
The idea of a parent bailing us out if we broke the law was unheard of. They actually sided with the law!
This generation has produced some of the best risk-takers, problem solvers and inventors ever!
The past 50 years have been an explosion of innovation and new ideas.
We had freedom, failure, success and responsibility, and we learned how to deal with it all!
And you are one of them! Congratulations!

I will say this, they are definately smarter. I'm staying at a place with this and my 4 year old grandson and he's importing podcasts on itunes, checking out humpty dumpty on youtube, runs three remotes flawlessly to get netflix. INSANE!

    I'm not there yet either.

I love Apples for Garage Band and editing video, but I'm on PCS 80% of the day.

Ipad for multiple gmail accounts saves me literally 3 hrs when I sort through the 1500 to 3000 emails a day

    Re: Kids Are Soft Today

I don't agree with this, and it might be cause i live in the getto, where i go to school its fight to survive, you are a swagmaster, an outcast, or a looser, one may not gain swag but be granted it, so getting a better rank is difficult, and what it is is defined by the "swagmasters". Everyone is identified as negro or this n***a, and cussing is an everyday thing, if you dont swear you have no authority, ive seen kids that used to snitch when they heard "suck" cuss people out. Getting a relationship is not easy unless you find a girl at the same rank as you and usualy there are groups of them, but they are in someway connected to higher ranks, usualy cause their friends, friends are friends of high ranks or they themselves are so they judge you by what others think of you and by your "swag",and not by who you are. Everyone knows everything, tell your friend a secret, everyone will know the next day. There is violence and nothing can be done cause its usualy off campus or if you squeal you are awarded the lifetime tag of "whiney bitch" so not much can be done but fight back, though ive been threatned more times than actualy harmed. Also my school is like vegas what happens there stays there, my parents dont even ask how my day was anymore. As i said though, this could just be me.
