i for one long for those good old days. 1957 i was in high school, great music, girls and times at the malt shop.

I grew up in a rural midwest town. It was almost expected for us guys , and a few girls, to go hunting and be late a few times per year. Not allowed, mind you, but not punished either.

In fact, Our principal used to tell us to make sure our shotguns were unloaded before we puy them in the back window racks of our pick-ups.

On any given hunting season day, our High School had 400 students, and 10-20 trucks in student parking with shotguns in the rear window.
    Scenario 2:
Johnny and Mark get into a fist fight after school.

Yea, they just used to make sure we were ok, give us a swat, and either send us home for the day, or 2 days in school suspension, spent working in the cafeteria all day. Which we got lunch free, couls take home any extra food we wanted, and were actually pain a few bucks.
    Scenario 3:
Jeffrey will not be still in class, he disrupts other students.
1957 - Jeffrey sent to the Principal's office and given a good paddling by the Principal. He then returns to class, sits still and does not disrupt class again.

The '57 one was dead on in '84 too. Too many kids on narcotics before they even hit puberty.

Did you know they make lollipops with medicine in them for kids? The druggist had a few that were about to expire, so he gave me a couple, when I was 14 or so, had some kinda painkiller in them.
    Scenario 4:
Billy breaks a window in his neighbor's car and his Dad gives him a whipping with his belt.
1957 - Billy is more careful next time, grows up normal, goes to college and becomes a successful businessman.
2010 - Billy's dad is arrested for child abuse Billy is removed to foster care and joins a gang. The state psychologist is told by Billy's sister that she remembers being abused herself and their dad goes to prison. Billy's mom has an affair with the psychologist.
Seen similar to the latter one happen way too often......
    Scenario 5:
Mark gets a headache and takes some aspirin to school.
1957 - Mark shares his aspirin with the Principal out on the smoking dock.
2010 - The police are called and Mark is expelled from school for drug violations. His car is then searched for drugs and weapons.
We used to carry our ciggies in our shirt pocket, even tho they were banned on school grounds. Principal used to tell us to leave them in our car, or where they wouldn't be seen, like in our locker. Used to go out to our cars for lunch, have a ciggie, etc. Would leave 'em on the dash, principal couldn't do anything about that, as our car was considered an extension of our house, at that time.

As it was illegal for under 18 to smoke, he complied w/ the law by calling our family and telling them we had ciggies in the car. I remember my grandfather saying 'Good, the kid has his own, won't be asking me for any' LOL
    Scenario 6:
    Pedro fails high school English.
1957 - Pedro goes to summer school, passes English and goes to college.
2010 - Pedro's cause is taken up by state. Newspaper articles appear nationally explaining that teaching English as a requirement for graduation is racist. ACLU files class action lawsuit against the state school system and Pedro's English teacher. English is then banned from core curriculum. Pedro is given his diploma anyway but ends up mowing lawns for a living because he cannot speak English.
In 84, in my area, if pedro was illegal, he would leave, or disappear, never to be heard from again. Needs to be that way again.
    Scenario 7:
Johnny takes apart leftover firecrackers from the Fourth of July, puts them in a model airplane paint bottle and blows up a red ant bed.
    1957 - Ants die.
2010 - ATF, Homeland Security and the FBI are all called. Johnny is charged with domestic terrorism. The FBI investigates his parents - and all siblings are removed from their home and all computers are confiscated. Johnny's dad is placed on a terror watch list and is never allowed to fly again.
Someone flushed an M-80 w/ a waterproof fuse, destroying a toilet State police came, had school-wide assembly, the cop could barely keep from laughing.
    Scenario 8:
Johnny falls while running during recess and scrapes his knee. He is found crying by his teacher, Mary. Mary hugs him to comfort him.
1957 In a short time, Johnny feels better and goes on playing.
2010 - Mary is accused of being a sexual predator and loses her job. She faces 3 years in State Prison. Johnny undergoes 5 years of therapy.
There was a teacher who a few of my friends claimed screwed them, never heard of any charges, in fact as her dad owned the only grocery for 20+ miles, nothing was ever done to her. She retired and took over her parents store.

Wife beating was never encouraged.but it was swept under the rug. Some things do get better nowadays, and this is one of them. Abusers are taken to task now
serioiusly, most of these things still happen exactly like this in the country...no problems with shotguns at school in many areas...
Actually, in some rural areas, it's not unusual to see a gun rack in a truck. Even in HS parking lots.
And as for hugs becoming sexual predators... right...
[/quote] Sorry, I've heard of just this happening lately.

Wife beating was encouraged, I personally know numerous incidences of men being told to control their wives in the days of yor....of course all of these were military related, but men told by MPs, by father in laws....etc.
My stepdad was like this, until I got big enough. He never laid a hand on me again, and last time he tried to hurt my mom.......I was the one taken away, albeit to my grandfathers house.

    Point taken, tho.

BTW, I was in the military, never was told to control my wife....but truthfully, she was a sweet, meek, mild, innocent little Hispanic girl. If I would've laid a hand on her, her dad would've literally killed me, and rightfully so.

But it would never come to that. Only 'serious' argument we had, well, now I know what they mean when they say "I saw the fire in her eyes'
