This SHOULD make you really fucking angry

The US government has started censoring the internet.

Are they blocking child porn sites? No

Are they blocking race hate sites? No

Are they blocking terrorist promoting site? No

Are they blocking sites that teach you how to make bombs? No

Are they blocking beastiality sites? No

In other words, are they blocking sites that you want blocked? No

Are they blocking sites that will keep you safe? No.

Are blocking sites to appease the corporations that donate to them? Yes!

This is blatant censorship for corporate profit. This is unjustifiable and needs to be fought in the US as it does here in Australia.

The US is really ramping up its war on intellectual property infringement, a war which I'm sure will be just as successful, cheap and supported by the people as the wars on drugs and terrorism. The US has started seizing the domain names of various websites through ICANN - not because owners of these sites were convicted of anything, but merely because complaints have been filed against them. Anyone want to take a guess how long it will be before the US government blocks WikiLeaks? Update: The blocks function outside of the US too. In other words, the US is forcing its views upon the rest of the world once again.

Here is a list of sites that has been blocked.

Note: DO NOT TRY TO VISIT THESE SITES.

The government is tracking who visits the site and how often using Piwik software (and depending on whether or not they get their hands on the server logs, they'll be able to see everyone who went there in the past as well).

What does it feel like to be afraid of your government?

For any Americans too scared to visit the sites, this is what you see:

    The Department of Homeland Security

Saving YOU from terrorism and cheap shoes.

Especially ironic is that their motto is "Preserving our freedom". Could this be any more 1984?

Kazza, I just opened a new thread about this before finding this one.

There is probably enough rage for a hundred threads.

But let's be clear--you seem almost ready to criticize obama for the very first time.

    Can this be true?

NOW are you starting to see the light? Everything we have ever said about him and his intentions are true, and havign watched him with increasing incredulity, I am convinced that it is actually far worse than we think: The depth of his hatred and the breadth of his plans to destroy us.

Ridiculous. The only reason to do such a thing is when the site already IS breaking a law. If thats the case with the list of domains, then Im less outraged, but if they are just shutting domains that might be used ... well what if my name were the same as a brand?

Although the tracking is a ing disgrace.

    Argh.

    .
Ok, first off, I've criticised Obama plenty of times on this forum. I've said many times that the I think it was terrible that Obama and McCain were the best that the system could offer up.

Second. The Republicans are behind this just as much as the Democrats. Do you the Republicans are any less in the pockets of corporations that the Democrats?

As I pointed out in the last thread on this, both Democrats and Republicans were on the committee pushing for more censorship.

3 years ago, when Bush started the department of homeland security, everyone on the left screamed out against it, and thought that voting out the Republican and voting in a Democrat would fix it. Now, you think that voting out the Democrat and voting in a Republican will fix it.

The problem is not limited to any particular candidate or any particular party. The problem is the system itself.

Um...you will recall that obama has encouraged citizens to contact the government and provided websites to do so, for the purpose of reporting opponents of his healthcare plan. Yeah--those who disagree with him. Nothing more.

The idea that he won't use this plan to track and eliminate dissenters is ludicrous.

You VASTLY underestimate the intentions of this creature.

AS for bipartisan support...this is what we have the Tea Party for--to choke out ALL these ers.

And, again, stopping piracy is a fairly hopeful and noble intention, but this power in the hands of a monster like obama...you think HE cares about piracy? LOL

This is day one of tracking and eliminating his opponents on the internet.

    Christmas, for him.

So as I was saying, all of the senators on this panel voted in favor of new legislation allowing this to take place. Both Republicans and Democrats.

Meanwhile, you all attack Obama. THIS IS BIGGER THAN THAT.

You're doing exactly what they want you to do. Those of you who associate with the republicans come on here and attack the democrats. And I'm sure it won't be long before we have people in the thread attacking the republicans.

Well--we have 'concept' and 'practice', don't we? This might work just like some liberal social programs--a good idea until operated by liberals.

And it is chlilling either way.

obama is the one who will be using this like his own private STASI

Then bloggers will go to prison, just like in China. And Iran. And N.Korea. And Cuba. And Venezuela. All obama's mentors.

Watch and see...soon we will be just like all other oppressed, arguing with morons who say that what is happening can't be happening because the government hasn't reported it.

I am saying wait and see...every single thing he has ever said, done or written indicates that he will shut down dissent in any way that he can.

I ma saying that tyhis a carte-blanchje for peroanl abuse,. and no person oin earth is as likely to abuse this as the guy in chage of iut.

That is, if his words, deeds, actions, mentors, influences, writings, etc. can be believed.

Exactly right. Its not one party, its the political body as a whole which does simply not understand the internet, or much more seriously dont give a shit.

Here in UK its the same, just not to the same extent - yet. We have idiotic politicians on all sides thinking its a good idea to make ISPs police the iternet for the govt, and threaten to remove someones internet access if they share illegal content. People have already had scumbag lawyers sending them demands for for alleged sharing of copyrighted material, if they dont pay they are threatened with court. Some who have never shared any files, and wouldnt know how, old folks etc.

And its only possible because the ing idiots in Parliament dont understand the internet, probably never use the internet, and would like to tightly control it.

I even remember a fairly recent Parliamentary committee of MPs discussing with ISP representatives how to prevent adult material from being seen by kids, and talking seriously about limiting access by time of day. The look on the faces of the ISP representatives was classic. That they actually had to explain the global nature of the internet beggars belief.

In Australia the proposed censorship would block wikileaks. Now whether you agree with the site or not, the thought of the government deciding to block information that is critical of the government is beyond wrong.

Great example, and why-in the world--would you think that obama, of all people, won't do this as soon as he can? He is on the record supporting any number of 'diminish the freedom of the people' proposals.

This is his dream as well as the only way to get a second term.

And we have many patriots, in the Tea Party and elsewhere, conservatives that will fight this. These ers that voted for this will be out, demonrat or GOP.

I cannot see any way that ANY of this can be allowed--there is simply no way to control those who make the decision.

They can and will shut down sites they 'don't like' if they have a link to a site that links to a sharing site. Blog posts with links, even hidden links...it just can't be controlled. Next we'll be talking about 'hate' sites, then news sites. Then we will just have obama TV, all day long.

    obamas dream, made real.

    All without due process!

It ALL must be stopped and we will stop it in the new Congress.
