    US to censor Internet

This is something we've been fighting in Australia for some time, and now it seems like you guys are going to go ahead and implement it. Meanwhile, Obama is criticising us for doing something similar.

In your case, it is starting out as a bill to forbid access to sites that infringe on copyright.

Want to buy fake designer-brand sunglasses from Taiwan? Sorry, the government has decided you're not allowed to. Please be a good little drone and spend your hard-earned dollars at the nearest Disney megamart.

That website you like with a logo kinda similar to Nike's? Sorry, Nike got a court order for trademark infringement. Doesn't matter that it's an overseas website and not subject to US laws. Now you're not allowed to visit it.

I do not believe, under any circumstances, that the government should be censoring the internet. It is far too open to abuse, and it is not the government's role.

The blacklist that Australia was going to use included websites like wikileaks. Now whatever your opinion about the release of sensitive documents, I am sure that everyone can agree that allowing the government to forbid us from seeing things in the public domain is a road that we just don't want to go down. Look at China for an example of where that takes you.

In Australia, anyone who opposes the filter is being accused of supporting child-porn. In the USA, I expect that anyone who opposes it will be accused of supporting piracy. Both cases need to be stopped.

This is scary... Open one possibility to the censors and it's easily followed by others.

The stupidity of it is also obvious:
It's very easy to get around it. Just get yourself an IP address outside the US or Australia. There is already a big market for services providing that possibility, an example in strongvpn.com.

Even if such a law is implemented, those who want to get around will easily get around it.

That's exactly what it is and I'm all for it. They should also censor "gay rights" sites peddling their garbage to children. Japanese child porn sites. and NAMBLA sites.

Why don't you move to China... or North Korea... they have the same opinion on censorship as you do. You will feel much more at home there.

    What about racist websites?

What about websites that criticise muslims? Remember who you have in office?

Where do you draw the line?

Free speech means free speech for everyone, not just for speech that you agree with. Because sooner or later you're going to find yourself on the wrong side of that divide.

We might feel a little better about all of this if we didn't have a president who spends hours a week complaining about criticism he receives and calls his opponents enemies.

We KNOW what he would like to do.

    Obama blocks/censors internet sites?
    umm.......ok.....

Never happen. He may try, but anyone can get an ip # that'll trace back to Upper Armpit, Russia.

I've heard about a browser that spoofs uk ip# 's. Or maybe it was just an add-on for IE?

Remember, whatever a man can create, another man can defeat. It may take a while to get around it, but I'm betting within a week there will be a fix.

    Re: US to censor Internet

The trick I see with censorship is this.

We all want the child porn blocked, as well as the bomb making sites the terrorists blogs. We don't want the KKK in our schools as well.

At the same time we want free speech and face it we want our downloads so the movie industry doesn't jack up prices to ridiculous levels yet again.

As much as the copyright agencies want to say it's for the children the simple fact remains that those people willl find the simple ways around the system and have no effect.

Meanwhile the copywrite agencies will successfully block the casual downloader and open up the door to control of free speach.

You are literally the poster child for all things racist and bigoted.

I love how you pick and chose what "freedoms" we all should have huh? I guess you forgot freedom is for ALL Americans, not just the ones Dan deems worthy.....

Get over your homophobia and come into at least the late 20th century will ya??
