    The Apophis asteroid

Ok, a little of astronomical weirdness….

In 2029 the recently discovered asteroid Apophis is going to make a very close approach to Earth. So close it will be under the orbits of our geo-synchronous satellites. So, as space rocks go, that is very very close.

It was named Apophis because its discovers are fans of the Star Gate TV show.

2029. An interesting year. This is the year from which the Terminators were/will come back in time from. Maybe they knew/know something we don’t?

The approach in 2029 will be April 13th 2029. April 13th is, as you might expect, Friday the thirteenth. A lucky day?

Bruce Willis will be 74 by 2029. Will he come out of retirement?

But the Friday April 13th approach may be very very unlucky. If its trajectory is "just right" it will be changed very slightly by the Earth's gravity. Slightly enough so that when it comes by in 2036 it will hit the Earth.

So. Do we feel lucky. Well do we Punk?

Bruce Willis will be 74 by 2029. Will he come out of retirement?

    Re: The Apophis asteroid

The odds of it hitting are 1 in 6,250 at least (estimates have stopped basically because NASA doesn't think there's any real possibility of it hitting us) so I do feel pretty lucky :)

But the next observation is scheduled to appear on this page http://www.naic.edu/~pradar/sched.shtml soon, the schedule indicates it's already been made so shouldn't be long

Yes, no fear for the 2029 encounter. The real problem is the one in 2036.

If we all keep our fingers crossed Friday, April 13th 2029 will be a lucky day and we will have nothing to worry about in 2036.

No I meant there's a 1:6250 chance of the 2036 one happening, hardly a "real problem" is it?
