    Politics For Dummies

One flaw of our voting system, is that it does not discern. Any simpleton over a certain age is 'entitled' to go to their polling station, and cast their vote.

There are a lot of people who function quite well with just the one brain cell.:cwm2:

Sure, it might be a nusicance when it comes to opening a milk carton, but generally, the simpleton can proceed through life in relatively blissful ignorance.

    However..

Let the simple minded loose on politics, and they change the very face and nature of it.

In order for their tiny brain to comprehend even slightly complex issues, they must first of all 'take a side'. Good v Evil really does exist, in their mind, it is black and white, and absolutely no grey.

One example might be to label others, 'liberal', 'communist', or even 'Nazi'. Again, the simple mind must do this, since it cannot understand the concept of someone not thinking as they do, and if someone does not, they are happy to pin unfair titles on them, albeit anyone intelligent can see what they are up to, of course.

There is a word for those who persecute others who are not like them, and that word is 'Fascism', since that behaviour is a building block of fascism, in whatever form it has ever taken.

Having identified their 'enemy', and having pinned the suitable lablel on them, they psychologically dehumanise them, and when mankind does that, it can have terrible results.

On an internet forum, the impact, thankfully, is much lesser, but still, the simpleton now has their 'enemies', and they need that, remember, everything must be black and white, they do not really understand that life, and personalities, are actually a pastiche of different things.

That's funny. I always thought that the flaw in our electoral process had nothing to do with how ignorant or impudent a person may be. I belive its actully that voting fails to represent the country completely. You see, the voting system in the United States is obsolete. Our founding fathers created an Electoral College to represent the states due to the fact they believed Americans were uneducated and uninformed about politics. However, that isn't the case today. Since our technology has improved over the last 300 years, Americans have more access to infomation , and the ability to make their own choices without the fear of dissmimulation. The United States should use the popularity vote to determine our presidency rather than Electoral College because it nullifies the votes of those the state they live in goes to. The law is suppose to uphold the majority, but at the same time, protect the rights of the minorities.

It may be true that some people may "function quite well on one brain cell ", but a prokaryotic cell ,with no nucleus, is still able to adapt to its environment quite well.

The point is, no matter how simple a person may seem to be, that does not discredit their abilities to make choices.

I understand what you mean by "the grey", but I don't know if you believe in that humans are sided by "good and bad". I can not make an accurate assumption on your explanation, sorry.

Personally, I believe that there is no such thing as good vs. evil. We are all humans and make mistakes. Our actions are jusitified by what we believe is correct. We may think that political authoritarians, such as Adolf Hitler and Joseph Stalin, may not have made the best of choices , but certain situtations may render the mind to make choices at a particular moment that may seem approtiate for that matter.

I disagree that impact of internet forums is lesser for "simpletons" beacuse they still expresss their beliefs, no matter how deranged they may be. The internet allows us to communicate ideas to generate possibilities. The internet has interaction sites , such as scam.com , allows all types to people to connect ideas ,and dicuss their idealogy to subject it to change. Ideas are stronger than guns, no matter how simple or complex they maybe.
The people to fear are not those who disagree with you, but those who disagree with you and are too cowardly to let you know

A typical vice of American politics is the avoidance of saying anything real on real issues.

An individual who breaks a law that conscience tells him is unjust, and who willingly accepts the penalty of imprisonment in order to arouse the conscience of the community over its injustice, is in reality expressing the highest respect for the law.

Well thought out post, thank you.

I portioned off the part, above.

Sure, technology has improved to the extent that, in theory, no one should need to be uninformed, even someone with limited funds can gain accesss to books, or perhaps use an internet cafe. The difficulty is that the simple mind, while having access to this, will often use it for the wrong reasons, such as downloading all the series from the latest 'reality' TV show, to play games, or, if they do venture into 'news' sites, invariably they are drawn to sites which are invalid in terms of their quality news, and full of the simple 'black and white' logic which the mind of the simple can digest.
