The sweetness, ah yes. Jim Brown, Barry Sanders, both deprived themselves and their fans by retiring too early, yet unfortunately Emmit Smith done the opposite, (unless you're a Cowboys fan) to gain his records. And to me, very close, Earl Campbell. Honorable mentions to Dickerson, Allen, Riggins, Harris, Dorsett,..Simpson & modern day maybe's Tomlinson, Alexander, Faulk, Martin & Sammy Winder... of course!

    1) Walter Payton-Chicago Bears [/U] Not because he passed away, But because quite simply he was great Runner And my oppinion still holds the nfl mark for most yards running from the line of scrimage. If you took careers from beginning to end he did it in fewer years then the im gonna run till arthritas completly cripples me Emitt Smith did, And i rated him higher then Jim Brown simply because i feel he was better then Jim Brown.

2)Eric Dickerson-Los Angeles Rams Very gifted back and still holds the single season rushing mark with 2,105 yards. This was a hard chose between Dickerson and Barry Sanders, But ill give the spot to Eric Dickerson Based on The unbroken single season mark thats still unbroken.

3)Barry Sanders-Detroit Lions The human highlight reel could have easily been 1 or 2 on this list, A Great runner that was a great joy to watch, Also in alite group with Dickerson For going over 2,000 yards in a single season.

4)Earl Cambell-Houston Oilers The hardest hitting back to ever put on a pair of cleets, Ran over Jack Lambert the great linebacker for the steelers One on One,, Held the mark for the AFC in rushing a number of years in the late 70s and early 80s..

5)O.J Simpson-Buffalo Bills I know, I know,, But regardless of what he may or may not have done other wise, he was a great running back, Setting the latter to be broken by Dickerson of 2003 yards in a single season, only 3 other backs have ever broken it since,, Dickerson, Sanders, Lewis....

Theres great backs that were not mentioned here, so tell me and everyone what your list looks like...........
Greatest Back of all-time = Jim Brown

All others compete for number 2.

How Smith is winning this pole i have know idea, people must have been watching different runners then i have over the course of the last 30 years.
To many Cowboy fans i suppose, what else is new. People must be bias towards this fact... He got the title by running his needed to be retired legs into the ground only.. Go back and match year vs year to see who was really the best here...
In my opinion you look lame if you can't spell the players' names correctly. I guess your best reply is to swear at me. Sorry if I embarrassed you. BTW, are you going to actually award some type of a pole to the winner of your poll (I'll explain if you don't understand).

I'm certainly no Cowboys fan, but I can't believe nobody has brought up Tony Dorsett. As a Redskins fan (I know, it hurts) I have to give honorable mentions to John Riggins. Truly a unique player. And to Bo Jackson. Nobody knows how good he might had been. But, my favorite was Earl Campbell. As smooth and elegant of runner Gale Sayers was, Earl was just a beast. If you compare these running backs' styles to sex, Gale's style was like makin' love where as Earl's style was just flat out [email protected]&%ing for an hour then kicking her out and leaving the money on the dresser for her to catch a cab then never calling her again. He was that ferocious of a running back.

No Jim Brown? He is the man. The man averaged a "First Down" per carry. Now that's hard to look over.

I don't want to seem hypersensitive, but can anyone - even the lifelong Cowboys fan - correctly spell Emmitt Smith. 2 T's in Emmitt. Also, if you are going to post a poll, couldn't you take the time to correctly spell the names of the people in the poll: Earl Campbell not Cambell, Marshall Faulk not Marshal, and LaDainian Tomlinson not LeDannian Tomelson.

BTW, my top 5 would be...in no particular order...Jim Brown, Walter Payton, Emmitt Smith, Barry Sanders, and Franco Harris. Second 5...Eric Dickerson, O.J. Simpson, Marshall Faulk, Earl Campbell, and Gale Sayers.

I am huge Cowboy Fan, But, Walter Payton is still the best in my opinion. If he had half of the o-line Emmit did, Walter would have ran up the numbers even more.

I loved his style. I wish more RB's would not run out of bounds..

    Go MAVS!

Re: List The Top 5 Greatest NFL Running backs Of History.

I could have possibly added John Riggins as well from the Redskins..
I had a hard time picking one favorite from my own created list, they were all great and all had slightly different running styles so it made it real hard to pick.. I went with Eric Dickerson he was not only great but also I was a bit partial since he played for my Rams 84 into 88.. He still holds the single season mark 2,105 yards to this day..

I also think that are current Rushing leader of all time was out classed in running ability by several Guys I chose to put above Payton,Sanders, and Dickersons ability was greater.. In the endurance department now thats where he probally deserves credit though.. Or for staying in long enough to attempt to take hand offs while in a wheel chair in Arizona, one of the two..

Re: List The Top 5 Greatest NFL Running backs Of History.

While Emmit Smith is without doubt an exceptional football player, he did play behind arguably the greatest offensive line in NFL history. He also played with an all-pro quarterback and an all-pro wide receiver. I think it’s easier to make the case that he had MORE HELP than any running back in NFL history! And although he is the all-time NFL rushing leader, I think it’s far to say that every other rusher in this survey (as well as some that are not) barring injury, would have superior numbers to E. Smith if they had been fortunate enough to play for the Cowboys during the same time period. I’m not bashing Emmit Smith, I just think there were several backs better at the position than he was.

Others not mentioned include Otis (O.J.) Anderson, Wilbert Montgomery, William Andrews, Chuck Muncie, Joe Cribbs, and Joe Morris just to name a few.

    Emmitt Smith, Dallas Cowboys!
    * Endurance, yardage record holder, 3 Super Bowls
Certainly a workhorse despite not always getting much help. Class act!

    Barry Sanders, Detroit Lions-
Imagine what he could have done with...best back without a ring.

    Sweetness.
Mike Ditka called him "the best football player I've ever seen."
Sweetness wins it hands down, not only because he was the greatest runner, but he was also probably the best blocking back you ever saw. None of the others could hold a candle to Walter when it comes to blocking. The guy was simply the best "all round" Running Back the game has seen thus far.
