When is network marketing not a scam?

There is considerable cynicism here regarding network marketing, so I'm casting down my gauntlet in true chivalrous style and let's get to the bottom line. Are you just going to grumble and complain or do some intelligent discussion!

There is a poll included, so let's get some feedback on which you rate.

I'd like to hear what you have to say about the network marketing companies - good and bad, after all we are 'intelligent' people and can make a reasoned arguement:

I work with a network marketing company in the UK and I have difficulty in making the connection between what I see happening and the 'pyramid scams' that people talk about.

Re: When is network marketing not a scam?

Ask these questions. What is the primary way of making money? If you don't sign-up anyone under you can you still make a fair amount of money? From your downline how much is paid to you, how much to your upline. Disregard any uses of the BBB, D&B and US Chamber of Commerce. They are in good standing but so what. Few people file complaints. Those orgainzation are good but not a good indicator of how truthful an orgainization is.
