There will be no election in 2008

There will be no election in 2008
There's only one way the American people will support a pre-emptive attack on another foreign country. If America gets attacked by biological or a so-called ‘dirty' nuclear device; the US government will receive enough support to permit the well known, well practiced Complan 8022-22 - A Global Nuclear Strike against Rogue States; Iran and North Korea.

The evidence regarding September 11, 2001 has been building for some time now. From the very first day of the attack there were numerous witness statements suggesting that many bombs had in fact been detonated in both towers. Now we know that both towers were allegedly brought down by temperatures that far exceeded the maximum temperatures that the fires in both towers could have possibly produced.

Building 7 appears to be a law unto itself. Never before in history has a building of such construction been destroyed by fire alone. I put it to the American people that Building 7 was the operational centre for the WTC demolition. An operation base; used to plan and execute the terrorist attacks on America. It was demolished just like the two towers, but for the purpose of destroying all the evidence relating to the planning and detonation of both towers.

The investigation of the events of 9/11 has been poor, controlled and censored. The 9/11 Commission delivered a censored document to the American public. When George Bush was questioned by the Commission, he wasn't able to answer the questions in public, nor was he able to answer the questions alone. He answered the Commission's questions in private and Cheney was there to hold his hand.

The obvious problem with 9/11 is the fact that the American people have been refused a genuine independent investigation into all the evidence surrounding 9/11. The reason the American people have been refused a full and frank discussion on 9/11 is because most of the government's structures are in fact surrounded in secrecy.

Why do government departments and policy need to be covered in secrecy? The main reason is that the people of government and power are the real people benefiting from government decisions. If you look at America's Federal Reserve, you will note that the American people are not allowed to know who in fact owns the Fed. Most American's believe that the Federal Reserve is owned by the government.

But the Federal Reserve is in fact owned by a small group of private bankers, with a large percent being European. So when the government needs to raise capital for infrastructure or even a war, the American government needs to apply for a loan from a small group of private bankers. This secret commenced in 1913, but more recently the bank has become involved in another major secret.

In March 2006 the Federal Reserve arbitrarily decided to stop reporting on something that affects the world's economy. The M-3 report from The Fed determines what the world's money supply is. This was used as a guide to help predict issues such as inflation and a way to determine necessary interest rates.

This is particularly relevant if the world suffers an economic catastrophe, because one of the expected responses will be an oversupply of money, which will lead to serious inflation, effectively destroying people's purchasing power. Many would argue that the money supply has been seriously increasing recently and that the Federal Reserve has negligently failed to increase interest rates to protect people from inflation.

In the aftermath of both world wars and through the Bretton Woods conference, the US and private bankers were handed the world. American bankers received the World Bank, European bankers received the IMF, but more importantly, the US dollar was instated as the standard unit of currency for trade in commodities. American and world bankers had in fact got what they always wanted by belatedly assisting the Allies in their fight against Germany. In addition to this, they demonstrated to the world the ‘shock and awe' of the American military with a dual nuclear attack on Japan.

The effect of bombing Japan with two nuclear bombs may or may not have ended the war; but it certainly demonstrated the level of control that the US now had over the world. Evidence of this control is demonstrated by the fact that the US military still has army bases in both Germany and Japan, some 60 years after the end of the war.

The US military continues to stake out its claim throughout the modern world. It attempts each day to consolidate its hold in Europe, the Middle East and Asia. The US is also showing a strong interest in India, with an indifferent approach to India's nuclear power/weapons production facilities.

But the ultimate power of the US is found in its dollar. As soon as the US dollar was installed as the world's standard unit of currency; the US was able to freely secure the world's commodities including oil. The world's oil supply, although coming from the Middle East and other oil rich countries, is in fact controlled by the US through the NYMEX and IPE oil exchanges.

In 1971, the rest of the world, after accepting US dollars for all their commodities, whether it was coffee, oil or bananas, came collectively to the US and asked to exchange their mountains of US dollars for gold. With the US facing bankruptcy, President Nixon closed the gold window. From this day forward, the US dollar would be devalued to the extent that the gold price rose.

The practical effect of this was that the US dollar became spineless fiat. There is no backing for the US dollar; it is a mere piece of paper with no value, the only real value in the dollar is the fact that you must buy commodities with it, like oil.

Why doesn't the world simply drop the US dollar and end US supremacy and destructive foreign policy? The world is full of US dollars; economies around the world are impregnated with reserves full of US dollars. Collectively, China and Japan, hold $4.5 Trillion worth of US foreign reserves. If they stopped trading in US dollars both their economies would collapse. In total, the rest of the world holds around $14.5 Trillion in US foreign reserves.

The US dollar is traded and effectively measured by the US index. It is well known throughout the world that if the US dollar index goes below 80 points, then the world will go into a major depression and the US will lose control of world trade, including oil. From 2003 onwards, the US index has fallen below 100 points, in 2007 it rests between 80 and 85 points. Any move below 80 points will no doubt lead first to a US and then a worldwide economic catastrophe.

Has anybody refused to trade in US dollars in the past? In 2000, there was one country that stopped trading in US dollars. That country was Iraq; Saddam Hussein started demanding Euros for Iraqi oil, and many were prepared to pay Euros. Just one year after this event, the US people suffered 9/11; the event which allowed George Bush to strike Iraq in 2003.

If you allow yourself to consider or believe the above proposition and allow yourself to consider for a minute that the US did in fact invade Iraq to protect the US dollar. Then you can for a minute start to understand how people with the money think. The people in power sent a message to the rest of the world, when they executed Saddam Hussein and happily watched Iraq slide towards civil war; ‘don't **** with the US dollar'.

Just recently another country with oil is again defiantly trading in Euros. The Iranian government has openly entered into contracts with Russia and China for its oil in Euros. The impact is bigger than the threat of an invasion of Iran. The bigger picture is a conflict between Russia, China and the US.

China is the fastest growing economy in the history of the world. Their power to influence geo-political issues is at the forefront of every political or economic analyst's mind. A mere sneeze in the Chinese market has direct and palpable repercussions for the world's markets. Russia holds nearly half of the world's nuclear weapons, need we say anymore.

In the short time that George Bush has been in power he has pulled out of the Anti-Ballistic Missile Treaty with Russia. In addition to having massive bases already located in Europe, the US continues to enjoy the security of bases in both Bulgaria and Romania. These two bases clearly contradict the terms of the Conventional Armed Forces in Europe treaty. Next week, there is a good chance President Putin will request that George Bush ratify Europe's CFE treaty.

What will happen if George Bush ratified the CFE treaty? The US would have to pull out of both Bulgaria and Romania. This will not happen. The current administration shows no signs of retreating on any arena of the world's stage; in fact they have plans to actually increase their military power around the world, especially in Europe.

In complete disregard of Russian and European concerns, the US will continue with its plans to install a missile defense system in both Poland and the Czech Republic. The US refusal to ratify the requirements of the CFE, in addition to fresh aggressive statements concerning the new US missile defense system will in fact instantly result in a new cold war. This could happen as early as next week.

However, the US government has no money and their credit card as demonstrated by the falling US index is in fact about to run out. The US is the most indebted country in the world; its current credit liability is over $71 trillion. Last year the US lost $1.3 trillion. US growth has in fact nearly stopped; coming in at a meager .6%.

Re: There will be no election in 2008

The US economy needs a war to get its economy ready for a new cold war. The US economy needs to secure and privatize more of the world's oil supply. The US government is taking steps to ensure the realization of both of these requirements.

The Iraqi government is currently being asked to open up its oil to the private market. This will require a change to the Iraqi constitution. American corporations are waiting to enter Iraq and finally slice up its wealth, like it has previously done with so many other countries in the past.

Secondly, the US government is preparing the American people for another massive attack on home soil. The JFK airport threat is the beginnings of a new series of threats that will have the American people believing that a massive attack is just around the corner.

The attack will be so huge that the US will respond with Complan 8022. Both the rogue states of Iran and North Korea will be attacked with small tactical nuclear weapons.

Bush will immediately invoke the powers afforded under his recent Presidential Executive Order, which grants him control over all arms of US government and the American economy. America will become a police state and a draft will be implemented immediately. There will be no election in 2008.

It is well known in military circles that conventional weapons have failed in both Iraq and Afghanistan. The US government does not have the resources for a ground attack war. The US military believes that small nuclear attacks against Iran and North Korea will offer up these two countries quickly and with minimal cost.

The US will unify North Korea and South Korea and install a puppet regime in Iran. Russia will be making threats of an imminent attack but they will be powerless to respond, because of the fact that they are now effectively surrounded by US bases. China will be in a similar position, surrounded by a unified Korea, Japan and an increasing threat from India.

The US with its new resources from both Iran and Iraq will be able to rebuild its economy and continue to participate in the new cold war. Russia and China will become increasingly isolated and desperate for change. How Russia and China react will determine the future of mankind.

All this will happen while the third world sits in the background, in their collective voice they hold the solution to the world's underlying problem. The two words that will collapse the whole system as we know it: “WE DEFAULT”. But nobody can make them say it; they have to decide themselves whether they're capable of changing the world.
My wake-up call: Watch for another 9/11-WMD experience

Paul Craig Roberts
Online Journal
Friday July 20, 2007

Quote:
This is a wake-up call that we are about to experience another 9/11-WMD experience.

The wake-up call is unlikely to be effective, because the American attitude toward government changed fundamentally 70-odd years ago. Prior to the 1930s, Americans were suspicious of government, but with the arrival of the Great Depression, Tojo, and Hitler, President Franklin D. Roosevelt convinced Americans that government existed to protect them from rapacious private interests and foreign threats. Today, Americans are more likely to give the benefit of the doubt to government than they are to family members, friends, and those who would warn them about the government’s protection.

Intelligent observers are puzzled that President Bush is persisting in a futile and unpopular war at the obvious expense of his party’s electoral chances in 2008.

In the July 18 Los Angeles Times (“Bush the Albatross”), Ronald Brownstein reminds us that Bush’s behavior is disastrous for his political party. Unpopular presidents “have consistently undercut their party in the next election.” Brownstein reports that “88 percent of voters who disapproved of the retiring president’s job performance voted against his party’s nominee in past elections. . . . On average, 80 percent of voters who disapproved of a president’s performance have voted against his party’s candidates even in House races since 1986.”

Brownstein notes that with Bush’s dismal approval rating, this implies a total wipeout of the Republicans in 2008.

A number of pundits have concluded that the reason the Democrats have not brought a halt to Bush’s follies is that they expect Bush’s unpopular policies to provide them with a landslide victory next year.

There is a problem with this reasoning. It assumes that Cheney, Rove, and the Republicans are ignorant of these facts or are content for the Republican Party to be destroyed after Bush has his warmonger-police state fling. “After me, the deluge.”

Isn’t it more likely that Cheney and Rove have in mind events that will, once again, rally the people behind President Bush and the Republican Party, that is fighting the “war on terror” that the Democrats “want to lose”?

Such events could take a number of forms. As even diehard Republican Patrick J. Buchanan observed on July 17, with three US aircraft carrier battle groups in congested waters off Iran, another Tonkin Gulf incident could easily be engineered to set us at war with Iran.

If Bush’s intentions were merely to bomb a nuclear reactor, he would not need three carrier strike forces.

Lately, the administration has switched to blaming Iran for the war in Iraq. The US Senate has already lined up behind the latest lie with a 97-0 vote to condemn Iran.

Alternatively, false flag “terrorist” strikes could be orchestrated in the US. The Bush administration has already infiltrated some dissident groups and encouraged them to participate in terrorist talk, for which they were arrested. It is possible that the administration could provoke some groups to actual acts of violence.

Many Americans dismiss suspicion of their government as treasonous, and most believe conspiracy to be impossible “because someone would talk.”

There is no basis in any known fact for this opinion.

According to polls, 36 percent of the American people disbelieve the 9/11 Commission Report. Despite this lack of confidence, and despite the numerous omissions and errors in the report, it has proven impossible to have an independent investigation of 9/11 or to examine the official explanation in public debate. Even experts and people with a lifetime of distinguished public service are dismissed as “conspiracy theorists,” “kooks,” and “traitors” if they question the official explanation of 9/11. This despite the fact that war in the Middle East, a long-planned goal of Bush’s neoconservative administration, could not have been initiated without a “new Pearl Harbor.”

That powerfully constructed steel buildings could suddenly turn to dust because they were struck by two flimsy aluminum airliners and experienced small fires on a few floors that burned for a short time appears unexceptionable to a majority of Americans.

Moreover, people have talked. Hundreds of them. Firefighters, police, janitors, and others report hearing and experiencing a series of explosions in upper floors and massive explosions in the underground basements. This eyewitness testimony was kept under wraps for three or more years until the official explanation had taken root. The oral histories were finally forced loose by Freedom Of Information Act suits. The eyewitness reports of explosion after explosion had no effect.

Larry Silverstein, who received billions of dollars in insurance payments for the destroyed buildings, talked. He said on public television that the order was given “to pull” building 7. His stunning admission had no effect.

The Bush administration is preparing us for more terrorist attacks. The latest intelligence report says that Al Qaeda has regrouped, rebuilt, and has the ability to come after us again. "Al Qaeda will intensify its efforts to put operatives here," says the report.

Security operatives, such as Michael Chertoff, and various instruments of administration propaganda have warned that we will be attacked before next year’s election. Chertoff is not a person who wants to be known as Chicken Little for telling us that the sky is falling.

Bush has the Republican Party in such a mess that it cannot survive without another 9/11. Whether authentic or orchestrated, an attack will activate Bush’s new executive orders, which create a dictatorial police state in event of “national emergency.” [See here.]

The UK government is hand-in-glove with the Bush administration and will provide cover or verification for whatever claim the Bush administration advances. So will the right-wing governments in Canada and Australia. That takes care of the English-speaking world from which contrary explanations might reach the American people.

It is possible that Bush is now too weak, that suspicion is too great, and that there is too much internal resistance in the federal bureaucracy and military for any such scenario. If so, then my prediction prior to the invasion that the US invasion of Iraq will destroy Bush, the Republican Party, and the conservative movement will be proven true. The Democrats’ strategy of doing nothing except making sure Bush gets his way will produce the landslide that they expect.

However, this assumes that Cheney, Rove, and their neoconservative allies have lost their cunning and their manipulative skills. It is difficult to imagine a more dangerous assumption for Democrats and the American people to make.

Once the US experiences new attacks, Bush will be vindicated. His voice will be confident as he speaks to the nation:

“My administration knew that there would be more attacks from these terrorists who hate us and our way of life and are determined to destroy every one of us. If only more of you had believed me and supported my war on terror these new attacks would not have happened. Our security efforts were impaired by the Democrats’ determined attempts to surrender to the terrorists by forcing our withdrawal from Iraq and by civil libertarian assaults on our necessary security measures. If only more Americans had trusted their government, this would not have happened.”

And so on. Anyone should be able to write the script.

Old-line Republican warns 'something's in the works' to trigger a police state

Muriel Kane
Raw Story
Friday July 20, 2007
Quote:
Thom Hartmann began his program on Thursday by reading from a new Executive Order which allows the government to seize the assets of anyone who interferes with its Iraq policies.

He then introduced old-line conservative Paul Craig Roberts -- a former Assistant Secretary of the Treasury under Reagan who has recently become known for his strong opposition to the Bush administration and the Iraq War -- by quoting the "strong words" which open Roberts' latest column: "Unless Congress immediately impeaches Bush and Cheney, a year from now the US could be a dictatorial police state at war with Iran."

"I don't actually think they're very strong," said Roberts of his words. "I get a lot of flak that they're understated and the situation is worse than I say. ... When Bush exercises this authority [under the new Executive Order] ... there's no check to it. It doesn't have to be ratified by Congress. The people who bear the brunt of these dictatorial police state actions have no recourse to the judiciary. So it really is a form of total, absolute, one-man rule. ... The American people don't really understand the danger that they face."

Re: There will be no election in 2008

The terrorists aren't coming, they're here . . . in Washington

Bev Conover
Online Journal
Friday July 20, 2007

Forget Osama and the bin Laden family friends of the Bushes. The real names of the terrorists are George W. Bush, Dick Cheney, and company, plus a complicit Congress that, thus far, refuses to use its constitutional powers to impeach and remove these criminals.

Yet, it's "al Qaeda," "al Qaeda," "al Qaeda," according to the corporate media parrots who spew it 24/7. "Al Qaeda" is responsible for every act of resistance to outright criminality in this world -- from fighting the US occupation in Iraq and Afghanistan to attempting to cause mayhem with vehicular Molotov cocktails in London and Glasgow (erroneously called "car bombs" by the corporate media).

To hear them tell it, "al Qaeda" is now a franchise operation and one will be opened near you tomorrow. Do you want fries with your bomb?

In Arabic "al Qaeda" means "the base." Scary, huh? But it has an exotic ring to the Western ear and is blamed for all manner of horrors perpetrated by the Bush administration, which scare the bejeezus out of people.

If you think 9/11, cooked up by the Bushies' friends at the Project for the New American Century, who said a "new Pearl Harbor" was needed, was bad enough, now you have Michael Dual Citizenship (US and Israeli) Chertoff saying he feels in his "gut" that another 9/11 is coming to the US this summer.

And the corporate media ate that one, too, along with the dessert served up by the latest National Intelligence Estimate that "the base" ("al Qaeda") is reconstituted and stronger than ever. Wow!

Meanwhile, the wannabe presidential candidates in both wings of the Corpocratic Party, with the exception of Dennis Kucinich, Mike Gravel and Ron Paul (all written off by the corporate media as "can't win" third tier candidates), are flexing their jaw muscles about what they will do to those "al Qaeda terrorists" -- from bombing Iran to flattening what is left of Afghanistan -- if they become the next occupants of the White House. Also, bear in mind that, with the exception of the aforementioned three, all are salivating over the prospect of exercising the power Bush has granted to himself as the "unitary executive" and "the decider," which is why they aren't calling for Cheney and Bush's impeachment.

What is completely ignored by both the corporate media and the wannabe presidents is that if the Bushies pull off their next 9/11, George W. will have his "catastrophic emergency" in order to invoke his National Security and Homeland Security Directive, thereby making himself and Cheney dictators for life. In that event, will all those who stuffed the campaign coffers of the 2008 hopefuls want a refund?

One might have thought Bush and Cheney would wait until next summer or early next fall to play their trump card, but with the disastrous Bush/Cheney ship severely listing, the people's call for their impeachment growing louder and their desire to nuke Iran before they go down, they've had to move to Plan B by setting the stage for the next attack lest Congress finally listens to the people and begins impeachment proceedings -- first against Cheney, then Bush.

We have had six and a half years of madness and mayhem during which we have lost most of our freedoms, hundreds of thousands of innocent people have been killed, millions have been displaced and their countries destroyed. We can barely afford another day of this murderous regime, much less hope these terrorists will be gone in 18 months without causing more death and destruction. Unless Cheney and Bush are impeached, tried, convicted and removed from office, we will have nothing. And if they pull off Plan B, we will have less than nothing.
If you think we're alarmists, we're in good company. Last week's guests on Bill Moyers' Journal, Bruce Fein and John Nichols, also laid out the case for impeachment, as did Paul Craig Roberts.

The US is the most indebted country in the world; its current credit liability is over $71 trillion. Last year the US lost $1.3 trillion. US growth has in fact nearly stopped; coming in at a meager .6%.
Finally BVR something that I agree with you 100%. That post is absolutely correct and to the point.

Here comes the false flag: Chertoff Predicts LA/San Francisco Dirty Bombs

My contact reported to me today by email that Chertoff spoke about more "gut feelings" that he (Chertoff) has about a simultaneous Los Angeles / San Francisco dirty bomb attack that "our enemy is surely planning".

FEMA Concentration Camps: Locations and Executive Orders
There over 800 prison camps in the United States, all fully operational and ready to receive prisoners. They are all staffed and even surrounded by full-time guards, but they are all empty. These camps are to be operated by FEMA (Federal Emergency Management Agency) should Martial Law need to be implemented in the United States and all it would take is a presidential signature on a proclamation and the attorney general's signature on a warrant to which a list of names is attached.

WARNING: A Real Dictatorship Coming!
I have never in my 50 years of life been more frightened then I am now. I have seen the arrogance of this White House and the massive damage done to our country. But the Katrina-size storm clouds are gathering folks. If we do not wake up now and flood Congress to impeach the President and Vice President, one year from now, Daily Kos may be banned and Markos himself may be disappeared, in a federal prison somewhere.

Even as I write these words I feel like a wild-eyed nutcase. If it were not for the OH SO REAL danger this country faces in the next 15 months or so as the people in power see their own doom and are determined to prevent their expulsion from power by suspending next year's elections and declaring martial law WHEN the next 9/11 comes or events that can be construed as a national emergency to "justify" such actions, I would be holding my tongue and crossing my fingers.

The Legal Pervert's Parade: Executive Privilege Über Alles

Chris Floyd
Lew Rockwell.com
Saturday July 21, 2007

Just in case you haven't noticed before, the United States of America has become a presidential tyranny. We've been clanging this bell here (and elsewhere) since late September 2001, and have seen it confirmed over and over through the years – with torture edicts, domestic spying, rendition, secret prisons, indefinite detention of uncharged, untried captives, etc. – and most recently and most baldly with the "Military Commissions Act," which enshrined the principle of arbitrary presidential power in law and gutted the ancient privilege of habeas corpus. This was rubberstamped by the Republican-led Congress last year – and is still standing strong under the Democratic-led Congress.

But now the Bush Regime has taken an even more brazen step into the light with its frankly fascist doctrine of the "Unitary Executive." As the Washington Post reports, the Administration's legal perverts are getting ready to claim – openly, officially – that the president's arbitrary will transcends every law in the land, every section of the Constitution. All he need do is arbitrarily assert "executive privilege" over any operation of government whatsoever to remove it beyond the reach of any legal action, Congressional inquiry – or criminal investigation. As Atrios notes, Bush has already arrogated to himself the "right" to interpret the law, through the "signing statements" he attaches to the bills he signs, declaring that he will obey only those strictures of the law that he sees fit. Now, the Administration is declaring that Bush need not be bound even by those laws he does deign to acknowledge. As the Post reports:

Bush administration officials unveiled a bold new assertion of executive authority yesterday in the dispute over the firing of nine U.S. attorneys, saying that the Justice Department will never be allowed to pursue contempt charges initiated by Congress against White House officials once the president has invoked executive privilege...

Under federal law, a statutory contempt citation by the House or Senate must be submitted to the U.S. attorney for the District of Columbia, "whose duty it shall be to bring the matter before the grand jury for its action." But administration officials argued yesterday that Congress has no power to force a U.S. attorney to pursue contempt charges in cases, such as the prosecutor firings, in which the president has declared that testimony or documents are protected from release by executive privilege...

Mark J. Rozell, a professor of public policy at George Mason University who has written a book on executive-privilege issues, called the administration's stance "astonishing."

"That's a breathtakingly broad view of the president's role in this system of separation of powers," Rozell said. "What this statement is saying is the president's claim of executive privilege trumps all."

This new authoritarian claim grows out of the Congressional investigation of the illegal politicization of the Justice Department – and the many instances of perjury that the investigation has produced, as Bush's legal perverts twisted, squirmed and lied outright under oath. Bush is frantically seeking to keep his top perverts – such as Harriet Miers, the loyal factotum who wiped the dribble from Junior's jim-jams and handed him the state papers he didn't read (i.e., "Bin Laden Determined to Strike in the U.S.," etc.) – from testifying before Congress about the White House machinations to fire U.S. attorneys for failing to file bogus cases against targeted enemies of the Leader. The slimy trail of this scheme leads straight to Bush's main minder, Karl Rove. Bush has already demonstrated that he is prepared to sacrifice anything – including the nation's chief undercover operation against the spread of nuclear weapons – to shield his porcine puppeteer. So the new assertion of authoritarian power – yet another slashing knife attack on the dying body of the Constitutional Republic – is small potatoes for this thug.

Yet the assertion, when it comes, will be an important step forward in the revolutionary remaking of the American state that the Bush Regime launched with its judicial coup in 2000. For note well, this "breathtaking" assertion – that Bush can stop any investigation of government wrongdoing simply by claiming "executive privilege" – is not based on Bush's role as "commander-in-chief in wartime," which has been the perverted basis of previous edicts licensing torture, rendition, indefinite detention, unrestricted domestic eavesdropping and the whole sinister schmeer of Bush's Terror War policies. Even this false "justification" – "stern but temporary measures taken as a military necessity while the nation is in peril" – is missing in the new assertion. The new power is seen as a permanent right of the head of the executive branch: an entirely new structural role for the president, who clearly stands above legislative oversight, judicial restraint and the laws of the land.

There is nothing "temporary" about this claim. (Of course, in practice, there is nothing "temporary" about Bush's authoritarian "Commander" powers either, since he claims the "war" which justifies them will go on for decades, perhaps generations; but theoretically at least, these "wartime" powers have a time limit.) Bush is saying that any action taken by the federal government can be cloaked by "executive privilege" as a matter of course, not as a wartime exigency. The Regime has once again – and very deliberately – provoked a constitutional crisis of the highest order. They are very clear about what they are doing. They are overthrowing the laws, traditions and constitutional structures that have maintained the American republic – imperfectly but steadily – for more than 200 years. (As John Gray notes in his new book, Black Mass, the basic structure of the American system has undergone almost no fundamental change since the adoption of the Constitution, unlike the systems of almost every other state around the globe, including such bastions of tradition like the UK; indeed, says Gray, with the possible exception of Switzerland, the United States could claim to be the oldest government in the world.)

The Bush-Cheney regime wants to change all that – and has been changing it, from the very beginning. They believe that the time for democracy and the rule of law has passed. Constitutional government and legal accountability are "quaint notions" that can no longer be indulged by a massive state with "responsibilities" for managing the affairs of the entire world – and a myriad of "enemies" challenging this benign domination. Only a Leader-state – run by a small, secretive cadre of dedicated elites able to operate beyond any restraints of law or outside supervision or public consent – is supple enough to deal with the duties and challenges faced by the "world's only hyperpower." This is their vision of government. It is a radical transformation, in both substance and structure, from what we have known before. It is authoritarian. It is arbitrary. It is ruthless, corrupt, brutal and vile, but because it is clothed in modern garb, in business suits, PR-packaged, slick and airbrushed, we don't see it for the barbaric throwback that it is. As I wrote in November 2001:

It won't come with jackboots and book burnings, with mass rallies and fevered harangues. It won't come with "black helicopters" or tanks on the street. It won't come like a storm – but like a break in the weather, that sudden change of season you might feel when the wind shifts on an October evening: everything is the same, but everything has changed. Something has gone, departed from the world, and a new reality has taken its place.

To be sure, there will be factional conflicts among this elite, and a degree of free debate will be permitted, within limits; but no one outside the privileged circle will be allowed to govern or influence state policy. Dissidents will be marginalized – usually by "the people" themselves. Deprived of historical knowledge by an impoverished educational system designed to produce complacent consumers, not thoughtful citizens, and left ignorant of current events by a media devoted solely to profit, many will internalize the force-fed values of the ruling elite, and act accordingly. There will be little need for overt methods of control.

The rulers will often act in secret; for reasons of "national security," the people will not be permitted to know what goes on in their name. Actions once unthinkable will be accepted as routine: government by executive fiat, the murder of "enemies" selected by the leader, undeclared war, torture, mass detentions without charge, the looting of the national treasury, the creation of huge new "security structures" targeted at the populace. In time, all this will come to seem "normal," as the chill of autumn feels normal when summer is gone.

Re: There will be no election in 2008

We are already living in that new reality. And the Democratic-led Congress has shown no sign of recognizing the seriousness of the situation. They refuse to assert the powers given to them by the Constitution for redress of executive tyranny. Not only have they taken impeachment "off the table" (while keeping war – even nuclear war – against Iran "on the table"), but even in the impasse over the subpoenas for Bush's legal perverts, they are refusing to use the legal powers they possess to compel obedience to the law. As the Post notes:

Under long-established procedures and laws, the House and Senate can each pursue two kinds of criminal contempt proceedings, and the Senate also has a civil contempt option. The first, called statutory contempt, has been the avenue most frequently pursued in modern times, and is the one that requires a referral to the U.S. attorney in the District.

Both chambers also have an "inherent contempt" power, allowing either body to hold its own trials and even jail those found in defiance of Congress. Although widely used during the 19th century, the power has not been invoked since 1934 and Democratic lawmakers have not displayed an appetite for reviving the practice.

No, these Democrats definitely have no appetite for concrete action – as opposed to pointless stunts like their all-nighter over their "anti-war" measure that would actually guarantee the long-term presence of a substantial American force in Iraq – which was of course one of the chief aims of Bush's invasion in the first place. (Sean O'Neill makes quick work of this ludicrous carnival here.) Their most likely response to this latest authoritarian power grab will be weeks of hand-wringing fulmination followed by months, if not years, of court action, as the matter winds its way slowly to the waiting arms of a Supreme Court dominated by Bushist apparatchiks. Meanwhile, the authoritarian regime will roll on, growing ever more entrenched, more emboldened and more radical. By the time this particular manifestation of the Bush tyranny is adjudicated, we will almost certainly be hip-deep in war with Iran – or under martial law following another terrorist attack (of whatever provenance) – or perhaps both.

And if you think this prognostication is too grim, too unlikely, or too exaggerated, then you have been sleepwalking through the last six years.
