Fight Back against "Free Trial" Scams!!

The BEST way to fight this scam is to be PROACTIVE!! Here is the scenario:

If you have a PayPal account (or any other type of account like PayPal) look for their product/service called a "SINGLE USE SECURE CREDIT CARD" (you may have to download and install the PayPal plug-in for your browser).

If they have one (as PayPal does) when ordering the free trial USE THIS SECURE SINGLE USE CREDIT CARD!!! It will not be attached or be identified to your bank/charge card accounts and will prevent unauthorized charges to your account!!! * (see below) Don't forget to save your receipt for the transaction.... Read More

You will be able to obtain the free trial, and not have to cancel the account as the Credit Card will be dead *. (see below) Or in my case, fail to cancel the subscription BEFORE the 19 day trial period for a 30 day trial of the product! * (see below) Which is how they "get you", assuming that they will bill you for the next round of product(s) BEFORE you see the credit card/bank statement!!!

* NOTICE: PayPal SECURE SINGLE USE CREDIT CARDS can be processed by a merchant more than one time!!! I found this out the hard way.

It seems that a "single use" card can be "hit" up to FOUR times by the same merchant for things like multiple ship orders, or SUBSCRIPTIONS!!!

Since the free trial is considered a subscription, the merchant was able to "hit" the card again 19 days after the first charge of 99 cents (for the free trial offer).

THE WAY AROUND THIS is to log on to your PayPal account and CLOSE the SECURE SINGLE USE CREDIT CARD as soon as it has been charged the first time for the 99 cents!!! (On PayPal, just click on the menu item on the right side of the page that says "PayPal Plugin", then there will be new menus on the left side that will enable you to view secure cards and close any open ones) Since the card was a "single use" card, you have done nothing illegal or wrong by closing this card. You have not violated any terms of agreements or any other convoluted "fine print" that the scammer has made you agree to in the free trial offer.

I assume other companies may have similar types of secure credit cards, just check out if they can be processed more than once by a merchant. Then see how to close them as soon as the first charge for the free trial comes in.

Good Luck, and if we do this right, we can put these scammers out of business, because they won't be able to exist selling their product for 99 cents and wasting time trying to collect from a dead credit cards.

Pass this info around, the more who know how to defeat these opportunistic bastards, the better!!!

Re: Fight Back against "Free Trial" Scams!!

This is a great post! Although I am usually good at canceling within 80% to 99% of the trial period (the "safe zone", so to speak), this creates a block that can't be circumvented. I don't do offers much anymore, but the rare occasions I do I will remember to use this trick!

Re: Fight Back against "Free Trial" Scams!!

Hi, I did take the steps you suggested using the paypal single use credit card for the ez bright trial offer, I was suckered into two different offers. It was an ad on facebook or myspace, and it said for best results use these 2 free trials. One was EZ Bright and one had another name, but when I received them, they were identical and from the same company. Anyway, because i canceled the single use card after the shipping was billed, they could not charge me any further, but they did however send the 2 accounts to a collection agency. they want $160 some odd dollars in total for the 2 accounts, and i never got anything more than the free trial so how can they even justify this? My question is, what steps to I take from here, are the paypal single use cards associated with my social security number? I mean, can this afect my credit rating? Thank you for your time.

Re: Fight Back against "Free Trial" Scams!!

Joshua

I'm no lawyer so maybe it's a sound advice to ask one about the legal situation here, but as far as I see it you have good chances to get away in case of a law suit.

Those are officially SCAM OFFERS as the consumer is mislead in the advertising, where a FREE TRIAL OFFER is advertised, and not any subscriptions.

OK, the terms are on the site, below somewhere and hard to find. And there it is written, in the fine prints, that you have to cancel before the 15 day trial is over - but why not clearly state it at the top where the sale is made?

The FTC is now after those scam offers as you are not the only one which got financial damage (well, thanks to that trick you didn't).

I guess you do nothing, only get legal advice to be sure that you can't get into troubles. Report this maybe to the BBB and the FTC, one more who complains is one complain more.

Re: Fight Back against "Free Trial" Scams!!

Um. Personally, I would back up a step, and ask myself... if it's REALLY intended to be a free trial, why would I enter my credit card number/PayPal info in the first place?

In any case, if you have the time and energy to play the game, do make sure you read the T&Cs for EACH product so you can see if it's rigged. (Some of the tooth whiteners I've seen state that you cannot return opened product, or that returns are only accepted with a special form. Makes it hard to actually try the product, no?)

Re: Fight Back against "Free Trial" Scams!!

I am brand new here.
I have been scammed by South Beach Smile. Maybe by Dazzle Smile too.

I was so foolish and put it on my debit card and not my credit card.

I am 73 years old and am so afraid of what might happen.

What can I do?

Re: Fight Back against "Free Trial" Scams!!

I was scammed by ACAI Force Max!
It all started when I saw their flashy ad, I read the information on their site and got interested, then I entered my details including country of residence, and the next page was showing delivery charge which was $2.99 with a voucher I found online, it went down to $1.99 so I thought I would sign up for that trial for 2 dollars and entered my Debit Card details. The next thing I saw was that on the next page it says I was charged $11.90 which is ridiculous. I then read T&C and found out that they add $8 for deliveries outside US, but I chose United Kingom when i entered my details and yet the next page showed postage price as $1.99... I then contacted a live-agent online and asked if it was possible to cancel the order since I don't want to pay that delivery charge and the order was placed only few minutes before. Yet I was told that she cannot cancel my order, but she can cancel further shipment which I agreed on. She gave me a cancellation number and when I asked her how to return the product, she gave me a number to call. I rang them up when I got the package saying that I want to send it back to avoid being charged the membership fee (which I've read about on their website) and I was sent instructions on my mail which I followed. I send those pills back via tracked mail to their UK warehouse and included a letter as well specifically saying that I'm returning the product to avoid being charged the membership fee and told them the story with the delivery charge as well. I didn't even open the pills, I send them back straight away. And it seems that all that was for nothing as a week later (today) I was charged 55 pounds by them!!! I'm gonna ring them up tomorrow and if they don't sort it out, I will go to my bank.

Re: Fight Back against "Free Trial" Scams!!

20minutesmiles.com/premiere whitening

You notice they can't even keep their name straight which
oughta tell you something.
Anyways, long story short, I ordered a trial size tooth
whitening product with the understanding that all I'd have
to pay is the $1.95 for shipping and handling.
The confirmaton email said nothing about the $99.77
charge that showed up on my checking account later on.
I tried to dispute it but the troglodyte that I spoke to on the
phone said they don't escalate those calls or give
refunds.
On top of that they haven't even sent me the %&*%!!
product and I've called several times since the 13th. of
last month. And I swear the operators at their call center
are a bunch of rude, malcontented, inarticulate half
educated dolts that showed up their for the first day of
work thinking they were going there to get food stamps.
They say they shipped the product but hey I can tell you I
piloted the Space Shuttle yesterday. Doesn't mean it
happened.
Sure you can blame me for not reading the fine print but
do a Google search on 20minutesmiles.com or Premiere
Whitening and I guarantee you'll see they've not only
ripped off people here in America but Australia and Great
Britain as well.

Re: Fight Back against "Free Trial" Scams!!

FTC, Visa, and BBB Partner to Educate Consumers About Free Trial Offers and Online Scams

The Federal Trade Commission has joined an effort to alert consumers to online deceptive marketing connected to free trial offers that require individuals to cancel or opt-out of a recurring charge for future products or services.

The Director of the FTC’s Bureau of Consumer Protection, David C. Vladeck, appeared at a press conference with officials from Visa and the Better Business Bureau (BBB) today to caution consumers about the free trial feature, known as a “negative option.” In a negative option feature, a company takes a consumer’s failure to cancel a free trial offer as permission to begin charging for the service. While many merchants use this billing process appropriately, others pre-check consent boxes, bury the details of the offers in the fine print, terms and conditions, and make cancellations or returns difficult, catching consumers in a cycle of recurring charges for products and services they do not want.

The best way to usually protect yourself from "free trial" scams is to read the terms and conditions of the offer BEFORE you order

Re: Fight Back against "Free Trial" wholesaledeals

many sites that offer the free trial when they have your bank card details they will just take the money from your bank card - no matter if you want to stop the payment.

Re: Fight Back against "Free Trial" Scams!!

Anonymous, Ohio
Mar 14 '10 I fell for this also - please report the companies to their respective incorporated states BBB's and Attorney Generals - this has to be a Federal crime as it is interstate business and a fraud - I did business with CelebWhiteTeeth.com and the customer service folks told me they were incorporated in Florida - appears they're also in California, and also have several different names of the product and company - the inc in Florida was Avayo Media, LLC found on the BBB's site by searching Celebrity White Teeth as their AKA - once you complain have some fun and call their offices in Florida - 786-230-3738 and leave a comlaint also...my CC company was kind enough to refund the money but I also had to close the account - Good luck folks -

Re: Fight Back against "Free Trial" Scams!!

Yeah, I got in one too. Advanced Cleanse. They advertise a free 30 day trial for .99 cents. That's why I gave them my card number....Hey, I thought....99 cents to try it GREAT..
nope, they charged my card 169.95!
They said it was because I didn't cancell within 14 days.
1) It says free 30 day trial
2) I ordered on the 3rd, received on the 11th, they charged my card on the 17th...that's not 30 days AND
3)It's not even the 14 days they're talking about...how could I have used it for 14 days between the 11th and 17th of the month!?
STAY AWAY from ADVANCED CLEANSE or ADVANCE CLEANSE.
I could only talk to people who spoke broken English...wouldn't transfer me to a supervisor and told me I was "sh#@" out of luck.

Re: Fight Back against "Free Trial" Scams!!

This is some good practical advise, and it will certainly help you avoid unwanted charges.

However, you have to consider the fact that if you do not cancel the free trial you are still bind by a contract (the terms and conditions you accepted) so the fact that you avoided the CC charge does not necessarily mean that you do not owe the money you were supposed to pay after the free trial.

This may have other consequences on your credit, so the best way to go is to do both:

Cancel your trial on time, and use one of these single use CC for added protection.
