Online Survey Inc. - scam?

I'm specifically curious about Online Survey Inc., and whether or not it is a legit business or merely another scam- but, while I'm asking, how CAN you tell a legit "Secret Shopper" service from someone trying to rip you off?

I can send you all the information I've gotten from Online Survey Inc. if you'd like it, too.

I heard about Online Survey Inc. through *****slist's Part Time Job section, and I decided to check it out- but, local news and common sense are making me question if I should really lock myself into this or not.

They're not asking for me to put in any money into anything, and they're not asking for my account information. But, they're sending me a check- can they rip me off if I cash their check?

I simply don't know anything about this sort of thing- thanks for the help!

Yes they can and yes they will. You got hooked in Nigerian 419 scam operation. Check will be very well made forgery. By the time you figure out you got scammed, your money will be on the way to scammers and you will owe bank for bounced check.

Legitimate Secret Shopper companies will never send any money upfront. They will never use Western Union. But they will require all documentation(recites, reviews, transportation costs) before paying you. And they will never advertise on Creigslist.

Re: Online Survey Inc. - scam?

Boris is correct.. Real mystery shopping companies ALWAYS require that you go to their website and apply. Then they will usually also require online training and THEN you can start applying for the shops. They don't send checks out of the blue, they don't send checks and ask you to do a shop ever.

There are a number of sites that list the web addresses of real mystery shopping companies.

Now if you are looking at surveys.. they also will never send you a check out of the blue and ask you to send part back or anything like that. Real survey companies do research for major corporations. You never need a credit card, you never pay for a trial or anything else.

Very likely this is the Mystery shopping check-cashing scams. MSPA (Mystery Shopping Providers Association) has a press release warning people about this scam: (link here).
Quote:
...
A check-cashing scam offers consumers the opportunity to make “easy money” by cashing a large sum cashier’s check and evaluating the service they receive when they wire the money to another location, typically outside the country. The “reward” offered to consumers is a percentage of the original cashier’s check as payment. In these scams, the check bounces several days later and the consumer is held liable for the entire amount of money wired to the international address – typically between $1,000 and $5,000.

“The biggest challenge for consumers with the check-cashing scam is the fact that scammers frequently use the names of legitimate mystery shopping companies in the letter they send to potential victims, and the cashier’s check contains the name of a real bank and looks real,” said MSPA Executive Director John Swinburn. “The bottom line for consumers is this – if the offer sounds too good to be true, it probably is.”
...
If you receive the check, do NOT cash it!!!

Re: Online Survey Inc. - scam?

THIS IS A SCAM, I went to the bank today and they immediately said this is a scam and that the check I received is fraudulent. They usually give you $3000 and ask you to keep 10% of it. I initiated a few emails and this is what it looks like:

"Hello,

Many thanks for your initial response indicating your interest in

working with us.

We are a company that conduct surveys and estimate other companies. We

get hired to go to other companies and act like customers in order

to know how the staffs are handling their services in relation

to their customers. Once we have a contract to do you would be

directed to the company or outlet and you would be given the funds you

need to do the job (either purchase things or require services) after

which you would write a comment on the staffs activities and give a

detailed record of your experience. Examples of details you would

forward to us are

1) How long it took you to get services.

2) Smartness of the attendant.

3) Customer service professionalism.

4) Sometimes you might be required to upset the attendant to see how

they react to clients when they get tensed (under pressure).

We turn the information (you gave us) over to the company executives

and they would carry out their own duties in improving there services.

Most companies employ our assistance when people give complaints about

their services or when they feel there are needs for them to improve

their customer service. Your Identity would be kept confidential as

the job states (secret shopper) you would be paid $300 for every

survey you carry out bonus on your transportation allowance and funds

would be given to you if you have to dine as part of the duty.

Your job will be to estimate and comment on customer service in a wide

variety of shops, stores, restaurant and services in your area. No

commitment is made on this job and you would have flexible hours as it

suits you. If you are interested do send in your:

(I)Your Full Name:

(II)Your Residence address:

City:

State:

Zip Code:

(III)Present work address:

(IV)Home and mobile Phone numbers:

(V)Email address:

(VI)Your Age and Current Occupation:

(VII)Your Gender:

So we can look at your distance from the locations which you have to

put your service into, and your address would also be needed for your

payments. We also implore you to send a scanned copy of any form of

Identification for the processing of your application form and also

for record purpose but if you cannot provide it presently then you can

provide it later..

Thanks

Hiring Manager.

Re: Online Survey Inc. - scam?

Oh yes this is that check scam. For anyone who get these emails... stop answering and destroy the checks they have sent you if they have already sent you.

You don't want to be in trouble for bringing in fake checks :)

I was going to sign up for one but then changed my mind once I read about it some more. It seems they are everywhere on the internet. I wouldn't know where to even start.

Re: Online Survey Inc. - scam?

If you want to be a mystery shopper the best place to start is the Mystery Shopping Providers Association.

http://www.jobslinger.com/mspa/exec/sfs/jobboard

This is the link to their job board, just put in your location and you can see if there are shops available in your area.

If you are elsewhere online and see a site that claims to be a mystery shopping or secret shopper site, just go back to mspa.org and find out if they are registered with them or not.

Re: Online Survey Inc. - scam?

There certainly are good, legitimate, honest and safe survey sites out there. You just need to take your time, do your research and be careful. A word to the wise...often the companies spending the most money to appear the highest in search results should give you pause. They are trying a bit too hard, don't you think?
