I received this e-mail yesterday from Yahoo Lottery Inc. informing me that I have won $100,000 US. The draw was on Sept 30 2005 and I have 30 days to claim my winnings. All I have to do is inform my claims adjuster "Tutu Brown" of my
1. full name
2. banking info
3. address
4. Phone number
5. marital status
6. occupation
7. date of birth

When i wrote back to Mr.Brown to ask him if this was a joke or a scam? He responded that Yahoo Lottery Inc was very popular and he is suprised that I have never heard of it. It seems that everyone who has a Yahoo account is entered in this lottery every month. He gave me this link to check things out. www.lottery.yahoo.com but guess what? the link does not work. I have forwarded these 2 e-mails to phonebusters. Yes I'm in Canada and the e-mails came from the UK.
Has anyone else received similar e-mails? I am trying to find someway to complain to Yahoo and inform them that someone is using their Yahoo Logo to try and defraud people but I am unsure as to how to contact Yahoo.

and the phone number they gave me is James Anderson +44 703 190 6917
I've never had this happen to be before but I hope they can catch people like this. It makes me very mad!

I just received an e-mail from yahoo mail abuse in the UK. They have shut down his account. They wanted me to forward the 2 e-mails with full headers attached..which i did but for some reason it's not showing them all the info they need to catch this guy so they are closing his yahoo account. He will just get another yahoo account and start up again. Crooks!

Too bad he's still around. Looks like they didn't shut him down at all. My boyfriend got the same email a few days ago with the same email addresses.

So Yahoo shuts his account - big deal! These scammers have dozens of accounts, or they go and open another one - often with a provider who isn't so bothered about abuse notices. It's like house dust - as soon as you clear it away, it's back again.

By the way, these are NOT phishing emails - phishing emails are completely different - they are disguised to look like they are from a bone fide company such as Ebay or Paypal or a well known bank, and provide a link to a website which looks exactly like the website of the company they pretend to be from. That is where you will be asked to provide sensitive details such as login, password and account number.

I just recieved one of these on Sun 2-12 saying I won $500. It gave me a link to be able to "claim my money" with e-gold or paypal. When you click the link, it doesn't work!! You should NEVER click on any link contained in a suspect email, even if it looks like it's from a trusted site such as Yahoo (it's extremely easy to disguise links - phishers do it all the time). It's possible that clicking the link in this email has downloaded a virus or trojan onto your computer. I suggest you run your antivirus software immediately.

My mom got a letter that told her that she won $500.00 from Yahoo. She was upset over the link not working. Yahoo should take better steps into stopping these people so that there customers are not frauded or even damaged frome the viruses that could be downloaded. Im glad to see that it is a scam so that I can pass the word around. That will help out.

Just exactly WHAT steps do you think Yahoo could take? Anyone anywhere can set up a free email account and send what they like to whom they like! If the email is reported to the service provider (eg, Yahoo or Hotmail) the account will be closed down. But that's just one account in hundreds of thousands!

There's plenty of advice on the web about fraudulent emails, advice on how to stay safe online and how to avoid malware - if people bothered to read it and act on it, instead of expecting commercial organisations to take all the responsibility, there would be a lot fewer sob stories around.

I got it to and reported it both to yahoo customer service and a government site they suggested. it makes me mad people are so deceitful. of course the first sign of any scam is that they want bank and personal info on you never never never give any of it. Here is what it looked like. Also notice that the numbers given as verification are the exact ones give in the other e-mail listed on this site.

They are all SCAMS. I receive and have been receiving for the last year or so between 10 and 20 of these you won the lottery emails a day. Every day.
Also beware of scams claiming to come from ebay, paypal, banks, etc. They want your info. Do no click on any links in the emails. If you get any claiming to be from ebay forward it along with headers to spoof@ebay.com
paypal goes to spoof@paypal.com

If the same state that botched an election can manage to trace people. I think that an organization like Yahoo certainly could. I don't think that Yahoo can do anything about it considering they offer free email service and I dont think that they monitor what you send.
I wrote to Yahoo about the mail (scams) that I have been recieving where everybody who wants me to send them my bank info has yahoo addresses, and told them that marking them as spam is no help, Ill post again with what they reply.

Yahoo is a commercial company - they are not law enforcement and don't have any ***** to tackle crime. They could certainly notify the police if they had proof of a crime being committed but since most scammers are in West Africa, law enforcement in the US can't do anything.

But even if these scammers were in the US or Europe, do you really think they register their email accounts using their real names and addresses? Not even scammers are that stupid! At the most, their IP addresses could be traced, but that would probably only lead to an internet cafe used by thousands of other people.

And anyway, law enforcement in most countries is simply not interested - or doesn't have the resources - to tackle internet fraud. On the whole, their attitude is that it's the victim's fault for not being more careful - and that's why forums like this (and there are many) exist: to try and educate people about internet fraud so that they ARE more careful.

The only way scammers are ever going to be stopped is if people stop believing their bull**** and giving them money.

Thanks for the reply. And yes that's why I joined this forum. To get the word out there about all these scams. I am confused as to why it's so hard to pin down these scammers. I don't really understand how you can have an e'mail address without it being able to be traced. I pay to have e'mail, it doesen't come free. Yes I use Yahoo, but I first have to have an ISP. It is there where I have to be registered with a traceable name and address, for billing purposes.
What I was talking about was how the law enforcement here, monitors just about everything on the internet, like this forum for instance. I have two political groups on Yahoo, and one member was detained by local authorities for an inflammatory remark he made about a local councilwoman. Now how did they manage to trace him? That's what I was talking about. I don't even know his actual address, just his e'mail address.

I doubt very much that US (or any other) law enforcement monitors "just about everything on the internet" - for a start, they just don't have the resources. Political groups may be an exception, of course, given the current situation. And the member you referred to was, I assume in the US, therefore the police will have approached his ISP to get his details. However, as I said before, scammers are usually in west Africa where the US police have no jurisdiction, and the IP address would only lead to an internet cafe anyway.

But law enforcement in most countries just aren't interested in this sort of internet fraud, it's simply not high on their list of priorities - except in cases of money laundering and/or where the amount stolen runs into hundreds of thousands of dollars/euros/pounds. Victims are always encouraged to report crimes to the police - not because they will do anything (they can't/don't - ever) but so that the crime is recorded and eventually action will have to be taken. There are scamfighting groups working with law enforcement at the moment in an attempt to get this to happen - I have no doubt that one day it will but at the moment it's not.

This is very similar to the spanish lottery scam that happened earlier this year, and not to mention the fact that I have never ever seen any advertisement or notice on the yahoo home page or yahoo mesenger saying anything about a lottery.
