Fbi Virus Scam

There's a nasty virus thats doing a popup on people's computers trying to get $200 because they found kiddie porn on your computer. It uses the FBI's logo and is pretty scary.

Quote:
The Federal Bureau of Investigations is getting a dozen complaints a day about this virus. When the computer locks up a screen comes up with the FBI logo, it says that the operating system is locked due to a violation of Federal Law. The scam is that the screen says that you have to pay $200 to unlock the computer. It says that you have 72-hours to pay or you will be arrested.
The FBI is getting so many complaints about this virus/scam, they’ve put a written warning and a podcast about it on its website.
“The FBI will never insist that you need to pay a fine to the FBI to unlock it. That’s not a law enforcement tactic,” said Supervisory Special Agent Herbert Stapleton in the FBI podcast.

Re: Fbi Virus Scam

Small bit of additional info.

The FBI press release for this is dated 9AUG12, 5 months ago.

I pointed this out because the 'Citadel Trojan' actually first appeared in FEB2012.
See: networkworld.com/news/2012-citadel.
This trojan is based on the older Zeus trojan which first appeared back in 2007.

See: Zeus (Trojan horse) [Wiki].

Most up to date A/V software should block this. However, if you should still get infected, here are some manual removal instructions.

If you are not that tech orientated then you can also use this automated removal tool;

Re: Fbi Virus Scam

I picked this bug up a few months ago. it's pretty easy to clean out.

I rebooted in 'safe mode' with networking.
Ran a full Malwarebytes update and scan.
Ran a full scan with my A/V software.
Rebooted and ran a final A/V scan just to be sure... all was fine. Problem solved.

I just watched a movie on tv while the programs did the work.
