There could be thousands! This is an issue of national importance, why isn't anyone talking about it!

As I understand it, you can purchase "customers"...

As I understand it, you can purchase "customers" as a rep for Trivita.

Upon further review, these "customers" are just random people (leads, names) that they can sell back to the reps.

To qualify as a "customer", you just have to make ANY purchase with Trivita and then the company can sell your name (lead) back to the field.

Willy, is this how this works?

Is that why you keep posting here that your Trivita rep to "customer" ratio is so high?

Obama will lose the Dems that are disillusioned...

Obama will lose the Dems that are disillusioned with his policies, but those same Dems will not be impressed with Romney and will vote third party or not at all. The Reps that do not see a viable candidate in Romney or Obama will vote third party or not at all.
Result: Obama will have held on to just enough of his voting bloc to eke out a win and claim it as a mandate from the people.
I have no polls or studies to support this... so don't ask. This is simply an observation.

Backache can be considered as one of the most...

Backache can be considered as one of the most common problems faced by people around the world. It is also a common symptom for different kinds of illnesses. The pain is mainly caused to the center of the back, along the spine or on both sides of the spine. The primary reasons for backaches are strain, fatigue and lack of balance. Backache can be caused due to an accident or injury to the spine or some other kinds of diseases. Other reasons for backache can be as simple as the way you sit in your office to constipation, increasing age, pregnancy, ulcer of the stomach, liver congestion, gallstones, cystitis, high-heeled shoes, unstable nervous system and many different reasons for which would we would have to write a new topic altogether.

Home Remedies for Backache/Back Pain

Use a heating pad or hot water bottle to ease the pain. You can also massage the ice on your back but not directly. Whichever makes you feel better you can try that hot or cold.

By stopping smoking you can avoid the pain in the back

Garlic is a great remedy for backache. Having two to three cloves of garlic every morning may give you the required results.

Garlic oil rubbed on our back also works to provide you a positive result.

A mixture of powdered sonth, sweet soda and salt if consumed with hot milk or water can alleviate your backache problems

Fish oil consumed daily is also a great way to combat backache problem

Keep yourself warm and eat hot food

Make a concoction by boiling ten tulsi leaves in one cup of water. Keep boiling till the water is reduced to half. Once this solution is cooled add salt and consume it everyday. If suffering from severe backache problems have it twice a day.

Massaging eucalyptus oil or mustard oil is also very good for backache problems

Consuming half a teaspoon Guggulu with warm water after your meals is very useful

Make a mixture five black pepper corns, five cloves and one gram dry ginger powder to be mixed in your tea and consumed at least twice a day.

Mix half a gram of cinnamon powder to one teaspoon honey and eat this mixture at least twice a day for best results.

Another way to reduce acute lower back problem is to get a good number of laps in a warm pool of water.

Aspirin or ibuprofen helps in reducing the inflammation. So you can have any of these a day to counter this problem.

Fresh yarrow juice is a great way to strengthen the back muscles. This may help in preventing the back problem.

How to Prevent Heart Attacks

At one time, little could be done for people with...

At one time, little could be done for people with heart disorders, and for those who suffered from a heart attack. Today, improved medicines and new methods of treatment allow many cardiac (heart) patients to live normal or nearly normal lives. Also, new kinds of equipment and new methods of performing heart operations have saved the lives of many people for whom there was formerly no hope.

The arteries of older people may become hardened or narrowed. This may be serious if it happens in the coronary arteries, for the blood supply of the heart is cut down. Severe chest pain may result. A heart attack occurs if the heart muscle is deprived of its blood supply. The heart muscle may be permanently damaged and replaced with scar tissue. Most people who have heart attacks recover. They must rest for several weeks or more, but they can usually then lead normal lives.

A heart whose muscle has been badly damaged cannot do a good job of pumping the blood. This condition is called heart failure. With this condition, fluid collects in some parts of the body, such as the lungs and ankles.

Doctors have a large variety of medicines and other treatments for dealing with heart disorders. A drug named digitalis is given to strengthen weak heart muscles. Drugs called Diuretics help to rid the body of excess fluid by way of the kidneys.

Diet is usually an important part of the treatment of cardiac patients. The doctor may prescribe a diet that is low in salt content. This is because fluids tend to collect in the body in the presence of salt. The heart must work harder to pump the extra fluids. The doctor often advises a patient to lose weight. The heart of an overweight patient must work harder to pump blood to the extra, unneeded body tissue. A low-fat diet may be prescribed because of a possible connection between fats and hardening of the arteries. Patients are also advised not to smoke. Smoking is a cause of serious lung diseases, and it also appears to increase the risk of getting some kinds of heart disease.

The beating heart provides the pressure to move the blood along in the blood vessels. When the space within the smaller arteries is narrowed, as may happen in older people, the heard must push harder to make the blood move. This results in high blood pressure. Drugs are used that cause the arteries to relax and thus lower the blood pressure. Other drugs bring about a lowering of the pressure by their effect on the nerves that control the small arteries.

The rate of the heartbeat is controlled by electrical impulses from the nervous system. These impulses set the pace for the heartbeat. Sometimes the impulses may cause an irregular beat or one that is too fast or too slow. Usually this is a temporary condition. If the problem is a serious one, an artificial pacemaker is set into the heart painlessly. The pacemaker is powered by a tiny battery that lasts for years. The life-saving pacemaker supplies electrical impulses to the heart, causing it to beat regularly and at a satisfactory rate.

Medical and surgical skill have saved or prolonged millions of lives. But some hearts are so badly damaged that they cannot be repaired. The first heart transplant was performed in December 1967, and we've come a long way since then. Take care of yourself. Your family loves you.

Herbal Remedies For Depression

Depression is a severe medical condition, one...

Depression is a severe medical condition, one that is brought about by a chemical imbalance in the brain that leads a patient to feel extreme lows and highs. When the low points hit, the patient is unable to take joy from anything, and often lacks the energy to participate in any of the activities they once enjoyed. There are many prescriptions now available through your doctor to combat this serious condition, but some people may want to try alternative measures that are closer to nature and more affordable. Here are some herbal remedies that some people claim work to combat depression, but keep in mind that the author of this article is by no means clinically qualified to ascertain their effectiveness, nor should this advice be taken to refute that of a qualified professional.

St. John’s Wort: This plant has been used for millennia to remedy a plethora of conditions, of which depression is just the latest. It is the most commonly applied herbal treatment for depression. This plant is native to Germany, where it has been used for over 40 years to treat depression. The plant is native to Europe, and is plain in appearance with little yellow flowers. It is these flowers, when properly dried and prepared, that are used for the various applications of St. John’s Wort. It has been known to be prescribed more than twenty times as frequently as Valium or Prozac.

SAMe: S-Adenosyl Methionine is an amino acid. It occurs naturally in our bodies and is known as the mechanism by which healthy neurotransmitter processes are carried to our brains. Increasing the amount of SAMe helps to increase the amount of serotonin, dopamine, and phosphatides and to improve the receptive abilities of the site.

5HTP: This amino acid is important to our bodies as it is transformed into serotonin, one of the strongest neurotransmitters in the brain. As clinically depressed patients are low in serotonin, a boost in 5HTP is known to be effective in combating depression symptoms.

Gingko Biloba: Gingko Biloba is an antioxidant, that is effective due to its ability to increase blood flow throughout the body and to the brain. The increased blood flow leads to increased neural responses, which includes the elimination of the lethargy that accompanies feelings of depression.

Ginseng: Ginseng is another herb that has been used for centuries to combat an array of afflictions. Ginseng use originated in Asia, and the market for this plant there remains strong to this day. This herb is called an adaptogen, which means that its qualities help adapt the body to various conditions.

There are various herbs and natural remedies that can assist a person in overcoming their feelings of anxiety and depression. Because this condition is such a serious one, however, it is always best to take these alternatives after consulting your doctor about their viability and appropriateness to your particular case.

Migraine Treatment With Botox

Most people are unaware that the use of Botox for...

Most people are unaware that the use of Botox for the prevention of migraine headaches came about purely by accident. It all happened through the use of Botox by plastic surgeons. Patients undergoing plastic surgery, who were also experiencing headaches, noticed that their injections of Botox helped with their migraine headaches.

Botox, also known as botulinum toxin, is a neurotoxin (a toxin that attacks nerve cells). It was originally approved by the FDA for use in conditions where hyperactivity of muscles was an underlying problem of related health and medical conditions. The theory is that Botox weakens or paralyzes muscles by inhibiting the release of acetylcholine. Acetylcholine is an ester of choline that is thought to play an important role in the transmission of nerve impulses at synapses and myoneural (muscle-nerve) junctions. By inhibiting the release of acetylcholine the nerves cannot cause a muscle contraction, thus relaxing the muscle. Botox is administered by being directly injected into the affected muscles.

There are differing theories as to how Botox works to eliminate migraine headaches, but the exact reasoning remains unclear. One theory is that muscle tension and spasms are a cause of migraines and by eliminating the muscle tension with an injection of Botox it will also eliminate the cause of the headaches. If given Botox before the headache begins it is possible to eliminate the headache before it even starts.

When muscles spasm it can irritate nerves that innervate them. When these nerves send signals to the brain in an increased amount it causes pain and possibly headaches. Botox may affect these nerve cells, inhibiting their transmission, causing a lessening of the perception of pain. Many researches think that migraine headaches are a result of inflammation of blood vessels. However, muscle tension may also play an important role in the cause of headaches.

When researchers test a medication's effectiveness they usually test it through a double-blind study. This means that some patients are given the medication being tested while others are given a placebo. A placebo is an inactive substance, such as sugar, that is given in place of the medication that is being evaluated. Some tests have been performed that did not involve double-blind studies, but showed that Botox could prevent migraine headaches. One double-blind study involving Botox and headaches showed only a small positive effect.

Initial studies may not have shown the full effectiveness of Botox for the prevention of headaches. The injections were not placed in the typical locations of the headache pain, but in areas normally injected during plastic surgery. In subsequent studies, using larger doses and injecting into more specific localities for the headache pain, the results were improved. These tests were concerning migraine headaches. However, with tension headaches, or muscle tension headaches, the studies have shown improved results. This is to be expected due to the weakening or paralyzing nature of Botox on the muscles that are experiencing tension.

When being injected with Botox for the prevention of headaches it may take several weeks before the injection takes effect. For this reason it is usually necessary to have it injected no more often than once every 3 months or so. People that have Botox administered for the treatment of headaches typically need it injected every few months. If there is too long of an interval between injections the headaches may be experienced by the patient.

However, the question arises about the safety of these regular injections of a neurotoxin. Since 1989, when it was first used as a headache treatment, it has appeared to be fairly safe. Most migraine headache medications are taken orally and eventually end up in the blood stream. Because of this common symptoms of migraine headache medication will be dizziness and drowsiness among other symptoms. Since Botox is injected directly into the muscle tissue and does not get absorbed into the blood system as does the typical headache medicine there are fewer side effects. Most commonly, the only side effects of injecting this neurotoxin is pain in the area of injection for a couple of days or drooping of the eyelids for a few days.

Studies are still being performed on this medication and as yet the FDA has not approved it for the treatment of headaches. However, physicians do prescribe it to their patients and if you think you are a candidate to use it you should discuss it with your doctor. If you do not respond to other headache medications it may be something to talk with your physician about. As the studies continue the effects and safety issues involving this medication should become more clear.

The alternative name given to itching is...

The alternative name given to itching is pruritus. It is a very common phenomenon which can bothers an animal as well as a human. It is an irritation on the skin which creates a desire to scratch the itchy area. Itching can be caused due to a skin disorder or an infection which can affect the whole body.

Parasites which reside on our body like scabies, mites or lice are one of the reasons for itching. You can also be a victim of allergic reaction due to any of the triggering agents. Insect bites are another reason which can create this irritation. After itching continuously you may develop a rash which may subside after sometime or may cause further skin irritation. Other than skin allergies or skin infections there are other disease like liver disease, kidney failure, lymphomas, leukemia’s and other blood disorder problems which causes itching. Many drugs too cause itching such as barbiturates and aspirin. Pregnancy, blisters, fungal infection, poison oak, poison ivy, insect sting, shingles, dandruff, eczema, threadworm are some other causes of itching. Cosmetics, dry skin in winter and over exposure to water can also cause itching. Prolonged sessions of itching would make things worse for your skin. It may leave behind a scar by the constant rubbing and scratching.

Home Remedies for Itching

Clean the affected area with lukewarm water either with a herbal soap or not.

After every bath moisturize your skin, this keeps it hydrated and prevents it from drying.

Add 2 cups of colloidal oatmeal in a tub of water and soak yourself in it. It is known as one of the foremost soothing agents of your skin. You can also use oatmeal as soap. Make a bundle of colloidal oatmeal wrapped in a handkerchief to be used as scrubber for your body.

Fill a bag with ice, zip it and wrap it with kitchen towel. Swallow 1 capsule of Benadryl. Ice makes the skin numb and Benadryl eases the itchy feeling.

Apply Vicks vapor rub on affected area to provide relief from skin irritation.

You can also apply aloe vera oil, cod liver oil, lemon juice, vitamin E oil, wheat germ oil or witch hazel tea on the affected area.

Cornstarch works great if put in bath water and also used for dusting the itchy areas.

Gerd Information

Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease, or GERD, is the...

Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease, or GERD, is the medical term for what most people refer to as acid reflux disease.

Gastroesophageal is a relatively new term for acid reflux disease. It has been used for approximately the past 20 years. Before that it was just referred to as heartburn. But heartburn is just one of the symptoms of GERD. Some of the other symptoms of GERD are regurgitation, hoarseness or laryngitis, the feeling of a lump in the throat, coughing, bad breath, asthma, difficulty swallowing, and water brash. Some people with GERD do not have any symptoms at all.

What happens to cause GERD? It starts with acid in the stomach washing back up into the esophagus repeatedly, which happens if the lower esophageal sphincter becomes relaxed.

Some foods and beverages can cause the lower esophageal sphincter to relax. This is not an all-inclusive list but some of the most common are: chocolate, licorice, peppermint, fatty foods, caffeinated beverages, and alcohol. Barbiturates, calcium-channel blockers, Diazepam and Sumitriptan are some of the medications that cause the lower esophageal sphincter to relax and allow acid back in to the esophagus.

Lifestyle changes can be very effective in helping to control GERD although over- the-counter medications, prescription medications, and possibly surgery, may also be necessary. Some of the lifestyle changes that may help control GERD include: losing weight if you are overweight, avoiding high-fat foods, not lying down right after eating, not eating large heavy meals (i.e. don’t overstuff yourself—especially on fatty foods), and stopping smoking if you are a smoker.

GERD can be a difficult disease to diagnosis. That is because of the wide range of symptoms people can experience and the complication of some people not experiencing any symptoms at all. It is easier to diagnosis if a person is experiencing the classic symptoms of GERD which are heartburn and regurgitation. In some cases a physician will not do tests right away but will first prescribe over-the-counter or prescription medications to see if they clear up the symptoms.

If the medications do not take care of the symptoms then a physician will likely do one or more of the following diagnostic tests: x-rays with a barium swallow, an upper gastrointestinal x-ray series, an upper endoscopy, an esophageal manometry, or a 24-hour pH probe. The reason physicians may try over-the-counter or prescription medications before running tests is because some of the tests, such as the upper endoscopy and pH probe are invasive, and because of the costs of some of the tests.

After diagnosing GERD, a physician will recommend lifestyle changes such as the ones mentioned earlier in this article to help control the GERD, and depending on the severity will recommend over-the-counter medications or will prescribe a stronger medication by prescription. The medications may need to be continued indefinitely because over half of all people who stop taking their medications after getting their symptoms under control have a recurrence within a year.

If the medications do not alleviate the symptoms, surgery may be needed. Surgery is also an alternative to having to take medications indefinitely. A procedure called a “Nissen fundoplication” is the type of surgery typically done to relieve GERD. In the surgery the upper part of the stomach located near the esophagus, called the “fundus,” is wrapped around the lower esophagus. Doing this strengthens the barrier function of the lower esophagus, thus preventing gastreosophageal reflux and repairing the main irregularity that occurs in people suffering from GERD. The surgery is usually done laparoscopically. It is considered a safe surgery (but remember any surgery carries risks) that typically gives good results.

Hair Transplant Information

In the past, as the names of these earlier...

In the past, as the names of these earlier procedures indicate, undergoing a hair transplant was a painfully unpleasant process. Men with receding hairlines and balding scalps often resorted to the unnatural-looking, and often ridiculed, toupee to avoid the pain, slow healing, and scarring of a transplant.

Because of this, the hair transplant business was staggering in the late twentieth century. Surgeons knew that hair restoration techniques needed to evolve.

Fast forward into the beginning of the twenty-first century...

Thousands of bad comb-overs and strip incision scars later, the new technique that hair restoration surgeons were waiting for was finally perfected. The hair transplant community eventually embraced follicular unit extraction (FUE). Surgeons praised the method and potential patients were curious about it.

But what exactly is follicular unit extraction? And is it really more effective and beneficial than older methods of hair transplantation?

Follicular unit extraction involves the removal of small groups of hair follicles (usually between one and four) from the donor site and their reinsertion into the receptor site. These small grafts allow for equal distribution of hair in the balding area of the scalp and produce more natural-looking results. In fact, once the receptor site has completely healed, it is virtually impossible to detect that any sort of hair transplant procedure has taken place.

The differences between FUE and the older methods of transplantation are noteworthy.

Firstly, the FUE procedure is quicker and less painful than any other hair restoration technique. FUE is performed with a punch-like scalpel that cuts the skin around the follicle. This facilitates the removal of about one to four follicles from the donor area at the same time. Also, the advanced method of follicular perforation™ allows the surgeon to make a shallow punch on the surrounding tissue, ensuring that the graft be released from the tissue with minimum traction and with better ease. The extracted follicles (called grafts) are then inserted into small slits that have been cut in the recipient area. These slits do not need suturing, heal quickly, and are completely undetectable once the new hair begins to grow in about seven to ten days.

Secondly, FUE is beneficial because the recovery process is much faster and less painful. In most patients, the grafts become fully secure in about eight days after surgery and the surgical wound in the donor area usually heals within one to two weeks. Some discomfort may be present, but usually analgesics like Tylenol or codeine will help. Generally, normal activity may be resumed one to two weeks after the procedure. In older methods of hair restoration, bleeding, suturing, and bandaging were parts of the long and painful recovery process.

Thirdly, 100% of hair loss sufferers are candidates for FUE. In the past, hair restoration was not as widely available to every hair loss sufferer as it is today. There were various criteria that each candidate had to meet to be eligible for a hair transplant. Such criteria included the patient’s age, color and texture of hair, skin complexion, amount of donor hair available, and future hair loss projections. However, because the methods involved with follicular unit extraction are so advanced, such criteria are not much of a concern. For example, the amount of donor hair on the head is not an issue when determining candidacy because the procedure allows for the extraction of hair from other parts of the body.

Fourthly, the incidence of complication during the FUE procedure is lower than with other transplantation methods. In a study, published by Dr. Masumi Inaba, of over 150 patients treated with FUE, researchers found that patients suffered only from mild discomfort from sitting still for several hours at a time. Furthermore, only four out of the 150 patients experienced donor area shock, while two more patients experienced a more limited variety of patchy circular alopecia (hair loss). Nevertheless, all patients made full recoveries within five weeks.

Lastly, FUE patients recover without visible scars in the donor or recipient area. Unlike previous methods, like strip incision, where an unattractive linear scar was exposed in the donor area, FUE does not leave ugly, unbearable scars on the head. Instead, the tiny slits that are cut in the recipient area are conveniently hidden by new hair. The final result of FUE in all patients is that of a seamless, natural, healthy-looking head of hair.

For all those who are suffering from hair loss and are searching for the best method of restoring their youth, follicular unit extraction should be considered. It is a hair restoration method that discards the use of the painful linear donor incision and regards 100% of hair loss patients as proper candidates for the procedure. It is widely predicted that within the coming years, follicular unit extraction will make further advancements and become the method of choice for every hair restoration surgeon and patient.

How to treat lice

It can be termed as one of the most unhygienic...

It can be termed as one of the most unhygienic things we come across humans. It is more prevalent among children as they mingle around with kids in the school as well as other kids in one’s building. It is a breeding ground for the lice where too many people or kids come together. Lice have infected people of all ages and they prefer hair which is clean and not oily. Clean hair helps in creating the right environment for the eggs of the lice. It sticks to the clean hair much easily in comparison to oily hair.

It can spread very easily. Physical contact is not the only thing which promotes its breed but usage of things like comb, brush, clothes, towels, clothes by an infected person causes the spread of lice. The survival rate of lice is very good as it can remain alive without human contact for a week and that too without food. Constant itching has been the key symptom, when affected by lice. The common places where you will see these tiny things are on the scalp, neck and even above your ears. The small white eggs would have infested your hair within two days. If one person in the family gets affected be sure that you are on a cleaning mission for everyone in the family.

Some of the common measures to be taken when you are slowly and silently attacked by lice

*Avoid sharing personal items like combs, clothes and other things
*Keep checking your child's hair for nits and lice
*Thorough cleaning of your bed linen as all members of your family would be using it at one point or the other
*Trimming ones hair is also a good way to prevent any further spread of lice, but it wont get rid of the nits or lice as you have shave your hair for that to happen
*Wash your hair and clothes once you have visited the beauty parlor

Some of the common treatments for removing lice are:

*Once through with shampooing your can use the vinegar conditioner in equal parts with water to remove the nits.
*Clean your comb very regularly or soak them in a disinfectant for better results.
*Use your regular shampoo with 3 tbsp of olive oil, 1 tsp of teas tree oil and 1 tsp of eucalyptus oil. Leave this on your hair for half-hour tightly covered and then rinse it.

These common remedies and many more can be used with proper prevention to ward off the scare of lice and its eggs.

Bladder Infection

Urinary tract infection (UTI) can be in any part...

Urinary tract infection (UTI) can be in any part of the urinary tract – The urethra, the bladder, the ureters and the kidneys. Of these, the most common infections occur in the bladder. Bladder infections are also known as cystitis, which literally means an inflammation of the bladder.

Risk Factors
Some people are more likely than others to get bladder infections. Women tend to get them more often than men due to their urethra being shorter and closer to the anus. Among the women most likely to get bladder infections are women who are pregnant, going through menopause and using a diaphragm for birth control. Men who have prostate inflammation or enlargement will also be more likely to have bladder infections. Risk factors that apply to both men and women are; kidney stones, sexual intercourse with multiple partners, narrowed urethra, immobility such as recovering from hip fracture, not drinking enough fluids, bowel incontinence and catheterization. Elderly people and people with diabetes are also at higher risk of bladder infections.

Children can also be at risk for bladder infections. They are most common in boys before the first birthday and among uncircumcised boys. Girls are most likely to get bladder infections at around three years old when toilet training is usually in progress. Children under five years old who have bladder infections will need follow-up care to prevent later kidney damage.

Symptoms
The symptoms of a bladder infection are varied. A person can have any or all of them. Young children may have only a fever or no symptoms at all. For adults, the symptoms can include; pressure in the lower pelvis, pain or burning with urination, frequent or urgent need to urinate, need to urinate at night, cloudy urine, blood in the urine, foul or strong urine odor, painful sexual intercourse, penis pain, flank pain, vomiting, fever and chills and mental changes or confusion.

Causes
Bacteria entering the urethra cause bladder infections. The bacteria, more often than not, come from the anus. In some children, an abnormality in the anatomy of the urinary tract contributes to frequent infections.

Treatment
Sometimes, a mild bladder infection will clear up on its own. Antibiotics are usually recommended, though, because there is a risk of the infection spreading to the kidneys. In order to protect their developing kidneys, children should be treated promptly with antibiotics. Elderly people should also be treated with antibiotics as soon as possible. If prompt treatment is not started, there is a greater chance of fatal complications.

There are many antibiotics that can be used to treat a bladder infection. They are: Nitrofurantoin, Cephalosporins, Sulfa drugs, Amoxicillin, Trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole, Doxycycline and Quinolones.

The last two should not be used in children. Women who are not elderly usually only need three days of antibiotics. No matter how many doses are prescribed, the full course of antibiotics must be taken or the infection could return and be harder to clear up. A severe bladder infection may require hospitalization to re-hydrate and receive antibiotics intravenously.

Prevention
Bladder infections can usually be prevented. By following these suggestions, bladder infection can be prevented or the frequency reduced. Keep your genital area clean and wipe from front to back. Drink plenty of fluids and avoid fluids that irritate the bladder, like alcohol and caffeine. Drink cranberry juice unless you have a family history of kidney stones. Wear cotton or some other breathable cloth underwear. Do not douche or use similar feminine hygiene products. Urinate soon after sexual intercourse.

Facial Tumour Disease

Devil Facial Tumour Disease is a term used to...

Devil Facial Tumour Disease is a term used to describe a fatal condition in Tasmanian devils which is characterised by the appearance of obvious facial cancers. The tumours or cancers are first noticed in and around the mouth as small lesions or lumps. These develop into large tumours around the face and neck and sometimes even in other parts of the body. Adults appear to be most affected by the disease - males the first affected, then females. Badly affected devils may have many cancers throughout the body.

The Tasmanian Government has nominated the devil for listing as vulnerable under the State’s Threatened Species Act in response to field data indicating the devil population had dropped between 33 and 50 per cent from a 1990 peak of 130000.

This spectacular disease was first detected in far north east Tasmania in the mid 1990s. It has now been recorded over much of the eastern half on Tasmania and seems to be spreading. The apparent boundaries of the disease are not yet clearly known. The disease is fatal and effects the majority of devils. The infectious mechanism is not yet clear although infection rates suggest it is possibly highly infectious between devils. So far, the disease has only been detected in wild devils on the Tasmanian mainland. However, a disease with superficial similarities has been detected in wild koalas on mainland Australia and in cats and pigs.

A major investigation of the disease and its impacts on wild populations is currently underway. All the work being done is vital in identifying management strategies to ensure the ongoing survival of the Tasmanian devil.

If devil numbers continue to fall at the large rate indicated above, there is a concern it may lead to increased numbers of other non-native species such as feral cats and the fox, recently thought to be introduced to Tasmania. Mooney (2004, p34) says devils would normally act as a buffer against foxes through competition for carrion and predation on fox cubs.

Eating Disorders

Many people are having problems with their...

Many people are having problems with their weight. These weight problems are the results of a person’s eating habits. In the United States, there are about 50 million of Americans are enroll weight loss programs. However, there are also people who wishes that they would have a lesser weight and resulted to suffering from eating disorders.

Eating disorders may be categorized as a psychiatric problem. Although many experts say that obesity is not truly a psychiatric problem, they consider that the state of being obese is also a form of eating disorders. Some people who are trying to lose weight may lead to the improper obsession of thinking of a person that his dieting becomes abnormal.

Another form of eating disorder is the anorexia nervosa. This form of eating disorder may happen to those people who may have a normal or a little above the average weight. These people think that their body is always overweight. This illness may begin to those who that have continuous diet regimens and eventually led to restraining the person’s balanced eating.

Anorexia nervosa can be identified to most women that are teenagers and are in their early adult stages. Although it is not common to males and to older adults, it can also occur to these types of people. The known classic dieters do not eat any food in a day which lead them to starvation. The self-starvation of a person is the point where he suppresses hunger sensations, which may lead an individual to become skeletal in appearance. These individuals are considered anorexic by type because they suffer from phobia on gaining weight.

Bulimia can be truly associated to many dieters especially to those individuals aged 17 to 25 years old. The process of bingeing and purging of most bulimics can make an individual addicted on what he has started in his diet regimen. Most of the time a person can no longer control the binge and spurge cycle that and led a person to be underweight and or even obese. However, most bulimics appear to be normal and have a normal body weight. Most of the time, the process in which they do their dieting is kept to themselves because most bulimics are shameful of their activities of bingeing and purging.

There are side effects an individual may suffer from for being bulimic especially for women that are actively in this process of dieting. An irregular menstrual cycle may occur to some women and the decrease of sexual interest may be experienced. Most bulimics have disturbing behavior on whatever things they would like to do. There are instances where bulimics have tendencies to be drug addicts and alcoholic. Some of which have records of shoplifting and other cases that are associated in such acts.

There are some different approaches on how to treat these forms of disorders. These ways may help bring back the proper eating and correct way to have a balanced diet. A well-known stage for bulimics could return the right eating pattern by not practicing the activity of bingeing and purging. They are able to control the incorrect dieting behavior on the diet regimen.

A consultative approach that would be advisable to those bulimics and anorexic is the therapy program. Many of the patients have been found to cooperate well and let themselves to be educated in psycho educational programs that will give them the information on the illness.

Home Remedies For Snoring

It begins at home and is only fitting that it is...

It begins at home and is only fitting that it is treated at home. There are a number of home remedies for snoring, which can allow you to take control of your nights and enjoy the quality of sleep that you deserve.

One of the most effective home remedies for snoring is to sleep on your side. If you always find yourself sleeping on your back, you may never guess that your sleeping position is directly linked to snoring. When you sleep on your back, the muscles and tissue are more likely to relax in the back of the throat, restrict your airway passage and cause snoring. In addition, sleeping on two pillows instead of one is among the popular home remedies for snoring. The additional elevation may help to keep your airways open.

If you suffer from allergies, try inhaling steam from hot running water before you go to bed. The heat may help to open up the nasal passages and improve breathing. The same is true if you are prone to sinus infections or have recently been diagnosed with a cold or the flu. One of the best home remedies for snoring is to simply improve the quality of air that you breathe. If your airways are restricted, snoring is much more likely. By ridding your home of allergens, you will increase air quality and enjoy the benefits of cleaner air. The presence of air filtration units in every room, especially the bedroom, is a good idea.

A majority of physicians will recommend trying a variety of home remedies for snoring before resorting to invasive surgery. After all avenues have been pursued without success, a doctor may consider a surgical procedure. In addition, if home remedies for snoring do not provide effective results, the sufferer may have sleep apnea. This is a serious condition which, if left untreated, may result in heart disease, an increased likelihood of a stroke or other medical problem. Sleep apnea occurs when the sufferer’s airway passages become completely blocked and they stop breathing completely on multiple occasions throughout the night. Home remedies for snoring are ideal if your snoring is just an inconvenience, but are not intended to cure sleep apnea.

Acetaminophen Poisoning

Tylenol is one of the most common pain-relievers...

Tylenol is one of the most common pain-relievers on the market today. It is a well-trusted brand name, not only for pain relief, but fever reduction as well. The key ingredient in Tylenol, acetaminophen, is found in many other drugs on the market as well, but Tylenol is the most well known. Many people who are afflicted with chronic pain, turn to Tylenol or other acetaminophen based pain killers to help them deal with their pain and be able to function every day.

People who are in considerable pain, will often do anything they can to make the pain go away. Some make the mistake of thinking that taking more acetaminophen will reduce their pain faster and make it stay away longer than the recommended dosage does. Little do these people know, however, having too much acetaminophen in your system can lead to other serious health problems. Just by taking a double dose of acetaminophen, you are subjecting your liver to a possibly lethal dose, which could lead to liver failure. People who are in pain don’t realize the consequences of taking too much medicine, they just want something to help them now. Thousands of people each year are being hospitalized for acetaminophen overdose, and hundreds die each year, not from intentionally overdosing, but misuse.

A common cause for this problem is that acetaminophen is found in most pain relievers on the market today. Many people will take Tylenol, then an hour or so later, turn around and take a different brand name pain killer, not realizing they are taking a double dose of basically the same ingredients. Many diseases and conditions cause chronic pain, such as arthritis, migraines, lupus, even down to the simple cold and flu that we all fall victim to at one time or another. In the search for something to lessen the pain and make day to day living more bearable, many people will inadvertently feed too much acetaminophen into their systems. It is important to understand that just because you may take a different type of pain killer, it is still likely to have the same active ingredients as the one you took before that didn’t work. Taking larger doses will not lessen the pain any faster than a normal dose, however it will put you at a substantially increased health risk.

Some people are more susceptible to the side effects caused by many medicines than others. Even a normal dosage of acetaminophen can sometimes lead these people straight to the emergency room. It is important to keep in mind the effects that medicine have on you individually, before you start popping pills.

It is a good idea to start reading the labels of any medicine you are considering taking, especially to find out what the active ingredients are. You are probably better off not mixing over the counter pain relievers, just pick one that works for you and follow the recommended dosage. Avoid the temptation to take more thinking it will work better, as odds are high that it will do more harm to your system than good. If you are a person who suffers from chronic daily pain, you should see your doctor for recommendations on what to do to help alleviate it, rather than taking treatment into your own hands with over the counter products.

During a job interview, have you ever been asked...

During a job interview, have you ever been asked to piss for your new employer? New applicants for many of the Fortune 500 corporations are now being forced to take a drug test. In fact, 15 million will be tested this year. Drug byproducts can be detected in urine, blood, hair, external residue, and even perspiration! Drugs aren't the only things they test for; employers are using urinalysis to test women for pregnancy. Pregnant women are getting laid off or denied employment after taking such a test. Parents are spying on their children. The DOD Directive requires the military to screen all active duty members annually. If you don't want to be a victim of the drug war, this text will help you. If you are well known, this text may protect your reputation. I strongly recommended that drug users (pot smokers in particular) read this.

Detection times vary depending on analytical method used, drug metabolism, tolerance, patient's condition, fluid intake and method and frequency of ingestion.

Other factors determining degree of intoxication include metabolism, tolerance, frequency of intake, fluid intake, amount of marijuana, potency of marijuana, and length of time you've been a user. If you use marijuana on rare occasions, your urine may be clean of metabolites in less than a week. There is a common and strange phenomena that occurs with chronic users. You would expect a chronic user to have the longest detection time and the smallest chance of passing. This is not always the case. A chronic user with a high tolerance will eliminate drugs quicker than an occasional user. Chronic users have tested negative after a week long binge. Lipid tissue also makes a huge difference. Skinny users not only have a faster metabolism (usually), but also lack storage for THC metabolites. Fat will cause a lag in excretion pattern, and lead to a longer detection time. You should now be able to understand why an individuals detection time for THC is so unpredictable.

Positive (defined): 50 nanograms of THC metabolites per milliliter defines a "presumptive positive" by NIDA certified labs. This value was originally 20 ng/mL, but too many false positives resulted. So the level was raised to 100 ng/mL to reduce false positives. As of January 1995, the threshold was lowered back down to 50 ng/mL because drinking water would easily bring a positive below 100 ng. Be aware that these cutoffs are not universally consistent.

Drink at least eight hefty glasses of fluid (preferably water) just prior to the test. Many people start drinking water several days before the test; which is useless. Water does NOT clean any THC metabolites out of your system because THC is not water soluble. Water only dilutes urine temporarily. Do not over do it; you can get water intoxication. People can actually overdose and even die from water intoxication. It's very hard to do, and you'll vomit before anything gets serious.

Eating red meat will boost creatinine levels. If you eat a lot of red meat for the 3 days prior to the test, your creatinine level will be normal, and the lab won't know that you've diluted your urine sample.

We've all heard that Warren Buffett is one of the greatest investors, haven't we?

Well, I guess he used to be . . . in the 20th century.

It doesn't look like he's doing so great anymore.

From Bloomberg:

Buffett Trails S&P 500 for Third Straight Year

Berkshire Hathaway Inc. (BRK/A) shareholders missed out on better returns from the Standard & Poor’s 500 Index by sticking with Chairman Warren Buffett after each of his last three annual meetings.

Berkshire fell 2.4 percent from the firm’s April 30, 2011, meeting through yesterday, compared with the 2.8 percent advance in the S&P 500. (SPX) This year’s gathering, planned for May 5 in Omaha, Nebraska, concludes three years in which Berkshire climbed about 32 percent, trailing the S&P 500’s gain of around 60 percent.

Here's another story about Buffett, which came out last week, and this one is even more harsh.

From Forbes:

It is that time of the year again when disciples of the media-created Guru Buffett make their annual pilgrimage to Omaha to give thanks and praise for his mysterious abilities to produce exceptional returns.

Except this year the pageantry and spectacle of the annual meeting of Berkshire Hathaway shareholders may serve less as a celebration and more as a distraction to the performance of Berkshire Hathaway stock over the past decade since it has been anything but magical, as Buffett would no doubt acknowledge.

There were a number of stories late last week about how Berkshire Hathaway underperformed the S&P500 for the last three years, so I thought I’d delve a bit deeper into his returns. Not only has the stock dramatically underperformed the S&P500 and Vanguard Total Domestic Equities (VTI) over the last three years by 7.95% or more a year, but over the last decade, it underperformed VTI by 0.21%.

Fortunately, I never invested my money in Berkshire Hathaway. Most of my money is in Vanguard.

So . . . why does this guy still get so much media attention? Isn't that strange?

Myths don't die easily. And there are a lot of myths about Warren Buffett. And a lot of things that don't really seem to add up.

As this new research claims, natural cycles, such as the El Nino climate pattern, are not responsible for elevating bad carbon-dioxide levels. “The major conclusion of our study is that the annual growth of atmospheric CO2 levels is strongly dependent on the absolute growth of the world economy, so that the annual absolute increase of (world gross domestic product) is a key variable to capture the annual increase in atmospheric CO2,” the report found.

Allison: Government policy is the primary cause...

Allison: Government policy is the primary cause of the financial crisis. The Federal Reserve “printed” too much money in the early 2000s to avoid a mild recession, which led to a massive misinvestment. The misinvestment was focused in the housing market due to the affordable housing (subprime) lending policies imposed by Congress on the giant Government Sponsored Enterprises (Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae), which would never have existed in a free market. When Freddie and Fannie failed, they owed $5.5 trillion and had $2 trillion in subprime loans. Because Freddie/Fannie had such a dominate share of home-mortgage lending in the United States (75 percent), they drove down the lending standards for the whole industry.

and now:

Allison: If you want to centrally manage an economy, control the allocation of capital. Dodd-Frank is a dramatic move toward statism (i.e., crony socialism) as government bureaucrats can practically decide which industries, companies and consumers have available credit. Dodd-Frank encourages more consolidation in the banking industry and instead of eliminating “too big to fail,” makes this practice a permanent public policy. It is easier for the centralized government authorities to control a few large institutions than many small companies.

Politicians love to lie to get elected. Lying for financial backing is just a little lower than usual on the totem pole.
Lies in red, irony in pink, true goal in green.

In several urgent fundraising appeals, Rep. Michele Bachmann falsely claims that biased “liberal judges” redrew her congressional district “in retaliation for repeatedly standing up to President Obama.” The truth is that only two of the five judges were Democratic appointees, and Bachmann’s Minnesota district has become even more Republican than it was before.
It’s true that a bipartisan panel of judges redrew district lines and placed the town where Bachmann lives in an abutting district represented by a Democrat. But she has chosen to again run in the 6th District, the one she has represented since 2007. And she doesn’t even have to move to do that.
Bachmann has sent out several appeals that carry the same message:
Bachmann email, May 11: A major development has just occurred in my race for the U.S. House of Representatives and I’m asking for your immediate help…
…You see, in retaliation for repeatedly standing up to President Obama on the national stage, liberal judges have redrawn the lines of my Minnesota Congressional District to try and wipe me off of the political map once and for all.
Their bias was so obvious they even gerrymandered my home — where my wonderful husband Marcus and I live –- entirely out of my District and placed it into one held by a six-term Democrat incumbent!

In the email, sent to national supporters of her failed presidential bid, Bachmann writes, “You and I must NOT allow the courts to defeat me by moving me out of my district at such a pivotal election. To hand the Obama Democrats this victory now would be to destroy all we have built over these last six years.”
The email goes on to ask donors to make “a commitment to my campaign in the amount of $2,500, $1,000, $500, $250, $100, $70, or $35 today.”
Let’s start with the bogus claim that the new district lines were redrawn by “liberal judges.” As Mother Jones reported on May 9, the redistricting was done by a five-judge panel selected by Minnesota’s chief justice, Lorie Gildea. Gildea was elevated to chief justice by former Republican Gov. Tim Pawlenty (the Minneapolis Star Tribune wrote about it in an article headlined “Pawlenty’s picks keep high court tilting right“). Only two of the five judges on the panel Gildea selected were Democratic appointees. One was appointed by Gov. Jesse Ventura, who was a member of the Independence Party of Minnesota; one was appointed by Pawlenty. And one by former Republican Gov. Arne Carlson.
Contrary to Bachmann’s assertion that the development “just occurred,” the panel issued its redistricting decision on Feb. 21.
It’s true that the newly drawn plans moved Bachmann’s home in Stillwater into the 4th Congressional District. The decision to move Stillwater into the 4th District was perfectly logical, said David Wasserman, a political analyst at the nonpartisan Cook Political Report. The 4th District, which takes in St. Paul, simply had not grown as fast as the rest of the state and needed to pick up population. And the 6th District had grown so quickly, it needed to lose population, he said.
“This was not a partisan map,” Wasserman said. “Her assertions are baloney.”
Bachmann’s home now lies in the 4th District, which is considered a safe Democratic district. But Bachmann isn’t running in the 4th District. Per the U.S. Constitution, a congressional candidate doesn’t need to actually live in a district to represent it (though the candidate does have to live in the state). Immediately after the redistricting plan was unveiled, Bachmann announced she would run to retain her seat in the 6th District.
“It may be a nuisance to her that her home was carved out of the 6th District, but the 6th District actually got more Republican,” Wasserman said. “She’s even safer than she was before.”
By the Cook Report’s estimation, the 6th District was 7 percentage points more Republican than the national average before the redistricting, and now it is 8 percentage points more Republican than the national average.
The redistricting actually “strengthened her position,” Wasserman said.
But that’s certainly not the impression Bachmann leaves in the email when she states: “As the TEA Party Caucus Chairwoman in the U.S. House and one of President Obama’s sharpest critics, the Democrats are licking their chops over Minnesota’s new political map and will spend MILLIONS to defeat me.”
Perhaps that kind of opposition is mounting, but if it does, Bachmann appears well-positioned to fight back. Bachmann’s campaign fundraising is far outpacing that of her chief Democratic opponent, hotelier Jim Graves. Graves announced recently that he had donated $100,000 to his own campaign, but according to Federal Election Commission reports, Bachmann raised nearly $580,000 for her congressional campaign in the first quarter of this year alone. In all, the latest FEC report shows that Bachmann has raised nearly $5.2 million this election cycle.

and the rest of his gang, too -

In the first verdict of its kind since former President George W. Bush left office, he and several members of his administration have been successfully convicted in absentia of war crimes in Malaysia.

Yes, this is a BFD.

This past Friday, a five panel tribunal delivered a unanimous guilty verdict after a week long trial that, unsurprisingly, was not covered by American media. The witnesses included several ex-Guantanamo detainees that gave testimony on the conditions and human rights violations that were systematically carried out under orders of the Bush administration.

Former President Bush, Former Vice-President Dick Cheney, Former Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld and the legal advisers Alberto Gonzales, David Addington, William Haynes, Jay Bybee and John Yoo that crafted the legal ‘justification’ for torture that basically said, ‘we can if we want to even if it’s illegal’ were the defendants. None were present, of course, but international war crime trials do not require the presence of the accused. The trial was run according to the standards set by the Nuremberg Trials to convict war criminals after World War II.

Professor Gurdial Singh Nijar, who headed the prosecution said, “The tribunal was very careful to adhere scrupulously to the regulations drawn up by the Nuremberg courts and the International Criminal Courts”.
Panicky Senate Democrats Flee From Obama on Gay Marriage
Posted by Jammie on May 12, 2012 at 9:45 pm

November is shaping up to be a bloodbath for Senate Democrats, and after drama queen Obama’s gay marriage stunt this week many of the vulnerable senators are running for the tall grass.

Senate Democrats facing difficult reelections are breaking with President Obama’s endorsement of same-sex marriage, a sign the issue is politically dangerous in battleground states.

Sens. Jon Tester (Mont.) and Claire McCaskill (Mo.), the two most vulnerable Democratic senators, have declined to endorse Obama’s call for the legalization of gay marriage.

Sens. Joe Manchin (W.Va.), Bob Casey (Pa.) and Bill Nelson (Fla.), Democrats who have easier races but in states that could become more competitive by November, have also backed away from Obama’s stance.

They all represent states with constitutional amendments or laws banning same-sex marriage (They're NOT banning it. They're DEFINING Marriage in this immoral culture).

Manchin is so desperate to avoid Obama he wouldn’t even say who he voted for the other day in the rimary, when Obama almost lost to the federal inmate.

Obama’s ship is sinking. No wonder these folks are looking for the lifeboat.

14 Propaganda Techniques Fox 'News' Uses to Brainwash Americans

http://www.alternet.org/news/151497/...ns?page=entire
.
There is nothing more sacred to the maintenance of democracy than a free press. Access to comprehensive, accurate and quality information is essential to the manifestation of Socratic citizenship - the society characterized by a civically engaged, well-informed and socially invested populace. Thus, to the degree that access to quality information is willfully or unintentionally obstructed, democracy itself is degraded.

It is ironic that in the era of 24-hour cable news networks and "reality" programming, the news-to-fluff ratio and overall veracity of information has declined precipitously. Take the fact Americans now spend on average about 50 hours a week using various forms of media, while at the same time cultural literacy levels hover just above the gutter.

Not only does mainstream media now tolerate gross misrepresentations of fact and history by public figures (highlighted most recently by Sarah Palin's ludicrous depiction of Paul Revere's ride), but many media actually legitimize these displays.

Pause for a moment and ask yourself what it means that the world's largest, most profitable and most popular news channel passes off as fact every whim, impulse and outrageously incompetent analysis of its so-called reporters. How did we get here?

Take the enormous amount of misinformation that is taken for truth by Fox audiences: the belief that Saddam Hussein had weapons of mass destruction (WMD) and that he was in on 9/11, the belief that climate change isn't real and/or man-made, the belief that Barack Obama is Muslim and wasn't born in the United States, the insistence that all Arabs are Muslim and all Muslims are terrorists, the inexplicable perceptions that immigrants are both too lazy to work and are about to steal your job.

All of these claims are demonstrably false, yet Fox News viewers will maintain their veracity with incredible zeal.

Why? Is it simply that we have lost our respect for knowledge?

.

1. Panic Mongering. This goes one step beyond simple fear mongering. With panic mongering, there is never a break from the fear. The idea is to terrify and terrorize the audience during every waking moment. From Muslims to swine flu to recession to homosexuals to immigrants to the rapture itself, the belief over at Fox seems to be that if your fight-or-flight reflexes aren't activated, you aren't alive. This of course raises the question: why terrorize your own audience? Because it is the fastest way to bypasses the rational brain. In other words, when people are afraid, they don't think rationally. And when they can't think rationally, they'll believe anything.

2. Character Assassination/Ad Hominem. Fox does not like to waste time debating the idea. Instead, they prefer a quicker route to dispensing with their opponents: go after the person's credibility, motives, intelligence, character, or, if necessary, sanity. No category of character assassination is off the table and no offense is beneath them. Fox and like-minded media figures also use ad hominem attacks not just against individuals, but entire categories of people in an effort to discredit the ideas of every person who is seen to fall into that category, e.g. "liberals," "hippies," "progressives" etc. This form of argument - if it can be called that - leaves no room for genuine debate over ideas, so by definition, it is undemocratic. Not to mention just plain crass.

3. Projection/Flipping. This one is frustrating for the viewer who is trying to actually follow the argument. It involves taking whatever underhanded tactic you're using and then accusing your opponent of doing it to you first. We see this frequently in the immigration discussion, where anti-racists are accused of racism, or in the climate change debate, where those who argue for human causes of the phenomenon are accused of not having science or facts on their side. It's often called upon when the media host finds themselves on the ropes in the debate.

4. Rewriting History. This is another way of saying that propagandists make the facts fit their worldview. The Downing Street Memos on the Iraq war were a classic example of this on a massive scale, but it happens daily and over smaller issues as well. A recent case in point is Palin's mangling of the Paul Revere ride, which Fox reporters have bent over backward to validate. Why lie about the historical facts, even when they can be demonstrated to be false? Well, because dogmatic minds actually find it easier to reject reality than to update their viewpoints. They will literally rewrite history if it serves their interests. And they'll often speak with such authority that the casual viewer will be tempted to question what they knew as fact.

5. Scapegoating/Othering. This works best when people feel insecure or scared. It's technically a form of both fear mongering and diversion, but it is so pervasive that it deserves its own category. The simple idea is that if you can find a group to blame for social or economic problems, you can then go on to a) justify violence/dehumanization of them, and b) subvert responsibility for any harm that may befall them as a result.

6. Conflating Violence With Power and Opposition to Violence With Weakness. This is more of what I'd call a "meta-frame" (a deeply held belief) than a media technique, but it is manifested in the ways news is reported constantly. For example, terms like "show of strength" are often used to describe acts of repression, such as those by the Iranian regime against the protesters in the summer of 2009. There are several concerning consequences of this form of conflation. First, it has the potential to make people feel falsely emboldened by shows of force - it can turn wars into sporting events. Secondly, especially in the context of American politics, displays of violence - whether manifested in war or debates about the Second Amendment - are seen as noble and (in an especially surreal irony) moral. Violence become synonymous with power, patriotism and piety.

7. Bullying. This is a favorite technique of several Fox commentators. That it continues to be employed demonstrates that it seems to have some efficacy. Bullying and yelling works best on people who come to the conversation with a lack of confidence, either in themselves or their grasp of the subject being discussed. The bully exploits this lack of confidence by berating the guest into submission or compliance. Often, less self-possessed people will feel shame and anxiety when being berated and the quickest way to end the immediate discomfort is to cede authority to the bully. The bully is then able to interpret that as a "win."

8. Confusion. As with the preceding technique, this one works best on an audience that is less confident and self-possessed. The idea is to deliberately confuse the argument, but insist that the logic is airtight and imply that anyone who disagrees is either too dumb or too fanatical to follow along. Less independent minds will interpret the confusion technique as a form of sophisticated thinking, thereby giving the user's claims veracity in the viewer's mind.

9. Populism. This is especially popular in election years. The speakers identifies themselves as one of "the people" and the target of their ire as an enemy of the people. The opponent is always "elitist" or a "bureaucrat" or a "government insider" or some other category that is not the people. The idea is to make the opponent harder to relate to and harder to empathize with. It often goes hand in hand with scapegoating. A common logical fallacy with populism bias when used by the right is that accused "elitists" are almost always liberals - a category of political actors who, by definition, advocate for non-elite groups.

10. Invoking the Christian God. This is similar to othering and populism. With morality politics, the idea is to declare yourself and your allies as patriots, Christians and "real Americans" (those are inseparable categories in this line of thinking) and anyone who challenges them as not. Basically, God loves Fox and Republicans and America. And hates taxes and anyone who doesn't love those other three things. Because the speaker has been benedicted by God to speak on behalf of all Americans, any challenge is perceived as immoral. It's a cheap and easy technique used by all totalitarian entities from states to cults.

11. Saturation. There are three components to effective saturation: being repetitive, being ubiquitous and being consistent. The message must be repeated cover and over, it must be everywhere and it must be shared across commentators: e.g. "Saddam has WMD." Veracity and hard data have no relationship to the efficacy of saturation. There is a psychological effect of being exposed to the same message over and over, regardless of whether it's true or if it even makes sense, e.g., "Barack Obama wasn't born in the United States." If something is said enough times, by enough people, many will come to accept it as truth. Another example is Fox's own slogan of "Fair and Balanced."

12. Disparaging Education. There is an emerging and disturbing lack of reverence for education and intellectualism in many mainstream media discourses. In fact, in some circles (e.g. Fox), higher education is often disparaged as elitist. Having a university credential is perceived by these folks as not a sign of credibility, but of a lack of it. In fact, among some commentators, evidence of intellectual prowess is treated snidely and as anti-American. The disdain for education and other evidence of being trained in critical thinking are direct threats to a hive-mind mentality, which is why they are so viscerally demeaned.

13. Guilt by Association. This is a favorite of Glenn Beck and Andrew Breitbart, both of whom have used it to decimate the careers and lives of many good people. Here's how it works: if your cousin's college roommate's uncle's ex-wife attended a dinner party back in 1984 with Gorbachev's niece's ex-boyfriend's sister, then you, by extension are a communist set on destroying America. Period.

14. Diversion. This is where, when on the ropes, the media commentator suddenly takes the debate in a weird but predictable direction to avoid accountability. This is the point in the discussion where most Fox anchors start comparing the opponent to Saul Alinsky or invoking ACORN or Media Matters, in a desperate attempt to win through guilt by association. Or they'll talk about wanting to focus on "moving forward," as though by analyzing the current state of things or God forbid, how we got to this state of things, you have no regard for the future. Any attempt to bring the discussion back to the issue at hand will likely be called deflection, an ironic use of the technique of projection/flipping.

In debating some of these tactics with colleagues and friends, I have also noticed that the Fox viewership seems to be marked by a sort of collective personality disorder whereby the viewer feels almost as though they've been let into a secret society. Something about their affiliation with the network makes them feel privileged and this affinity is likely what drives the viewers to defend the network so vehemently. They seem to identify with it at a core level, because it tells them they are special and privy to something the rest of us don't have. It's akin to the loyalty one feels by being let into a private club or a gang. That effect is also likely to make the propaganda more powerful, because it goes mostly unquestioned.

In considering these tactics and their possible effects on American public discourse, it is important to note that historically, those who've genuinely accessed truth have never berated those who did not. You don't get honored by history when you beat up your opponent: look at Martin Luther King Jr., Robert Kennedy, Abraham Lincoln. These men did not find the need to engage in othering, ad homeinum attacks, guilt by association or bullying. This is because when a person has accessed a truth, they are not threatened by the opposing views of others. This reality reveals the righteous indignation of people like Glenn Beck, Bill O'Reilly and Sean Hannity as a symptom of untruth. These individuals are hostile and angry precisely because they don't feel confident in their own veracity. And in general, the more someone is losing their temper in a debate and the more intolerant they are of listening to others, the more you can be certain they do not know what they're talking about.

One final observation. Fox audiences, birthers and Tea Partiers often defend their arguments by pointing to the fact that a lot of people share the same perceptions. This is a reasonable point to the extent that Murdoch's News Corporation reaches a far larger audience than any other single media outlet. But, the fact that a lot of people believe something is not necessarily a sign that it's true; it's just a sign that it's been effectively marketed.

As honest, fair and truly intellectual debate degrades before the eyes of the global media audience, the quality of American democracy degrades along with it.

No surprise, really. The failure of overt liberal lie and hate-fests is well-documented.

But this movie is blatantly in support of all the things that liberals hate--especially exceptionalism.

From the moment that Loki demands that humans accept their fate on their knees where they belong--as he describes a human need for "freedom from freedom"--we realize that he speaks for liberals.

This is, after all, the very baseline of leftist thought: hit your knees and worship your masters. What else IS communism?
Fury even has to repeatedly slap down an international council of pussies.
Captain AMERICA: "There is only one God here, and he doesn't dress like THAT!"
Last night we went to see The Avengers. It’s been some time since I’ve been to a sold out show at the theatre. The last time I was at a movie where the audience applauded at the end just might have been the when the first Star Wars movie came out. While watching The Avengers I was pleasantly surprised that I didn’t find any anti-American undertones. Then as the movie progressed I remember thinking to myself, “Is anyone else picking up the Pro American undertones I’m seeing? Could this main stream big budget Hollywood movie actually be saying America is good?”

*Spoiler Alert* (I will be giving away some of the move plot)

Here you had The Avengers, a group of individuals with big egos and diverse backgrounds forced together, who ultimately come together selflessly for the greater good as a group against evil.

Tony Stark (IronMan) played by Robert Downey Jr. does a great job picking up where the two Iron Man movies left off. He is arrogant, egotistical, and slightly suspicious of the Government. Although now, he has given up weapon making for green energy. (Gotta give the Libs something to cheer about) It was also nice to see Gwyneth Paltrow make more than just a cameo as the spunky love interest of Stark.

Bruce Banner (The Incredible Hulk) was played by Mark Ruffalo. To me Ruffalo really fit his character much better than Edward Norton did in The Hulk movie. Banner is reclusive and The Hulk, although a very angry man learned in this movie how to tell the difference between friend and foe and though still unpredictable and somewhat uncontrollable the difference between right and wrong. He even saves IronMan’s life at one point.

Thor played by Chris Hemsworth speaks funny (kind of Shakespearean) but it works for him, has convictions, faith, and morality that he never compromises. For Thor, things are right or wrong. There is no middle ground.

Steve Rogers (Captain America) played by Chris Evans is a retired American soldier and although he was frozen for 70 years he still holds true to honor of country and understands the price paid by those who serve and by those who still serve protecting those values. There was a great line where he is told to suit up and he asks if his America suit is still relevant (paraphrasing) He’s told, I think we could all use a little of what that suit represents these days don’t you? I love that line.

Natasha Romanoff (The Black Widow) played by Scarlett Johansson seems to be an American, no accent who defected from Russia and Clint Barton (Hawkeye) played by Jeremy Renner are good in battle even though they do not have superhuman powers. They seem to represent mortals willing to stand beside the others, putting themselves in danger for the greater good against forces more powerful them themselves seeming to know that if we all come together against evil, good will win.

The man who pulls them all together is Col. Nick Fury played by Samuel L Jackson. Fury takes orders from an international body but disregards orders to drop a nuke on Manhattan while his team still has a shot at defeating the enemy. As the representative of the Government it didn’t go unnoticed by me that Fury is willing to deceive his team members to get them to behave to his liking.

To me The Avengers is reminiscent of America, it’s struggles with industry, science, religion, and Government. They seem to understand and accept that each one’s passions and beliefs are true to them individually. They think their point of view is best maybe even superior. They accept each member knowing what they have to offer is special, unique, and necessary for our continued existence.

Stark is a business man believing in free markets and suspicious of government oversight. Banner looks to science and all it has to offer. Thor holds true to religion and commitment to faith and morality and Captain America stays true to honor of our soldiers of the past and those fighting for our freedom today. While all of these elements are capable of tearing us apart they also have an untimely way of pulling diverse points of view together for the greater good. The film shows acceptance through excellence and achievement. Each member of The Avengers has proven their value to the team and their right to be not only accepted but valued by the other team members. Very American!

They are not a part of the team because of equal opportunity or affirmative action. These members, each one respectively are exceptional but even more important is that they also understand that individual success can also serve a team’s success when they come together, creating an exceptional team understanding a team is only as strong as its weakest member.

Pulling together the best of the best, individual exceptional powers, respecting and valuing each other makes for an undefeatable team.

So am I making too much out of a fun movie? Am I reading too much into the fun of make believe? Maybe, I hope not though. I would like to think this is just what the makers of this movie were going for.

When he went to Occidental college he applied and received a Grant under the last name of his step father. He applied as a foreign exchange student. Isn't that fraud!
His whole life centered around socialistic attitudes, extreme views like his old friend and pastor.
He talks about his pride for the policeman who work for us all....yet he invites a black poet who openly writes of the need to kill police!
It odd how Mrs. Obama suddenly got on the board of a couple corporations as soon as Obama was elected...and she received more annual income from them than the "bad" guy who runs Walmart.
He complains of the 1%...yet he is the 1% and never paid the IRS any extra money to help the debt.
Christian Same Sex Marriages.....Was a Christian Rite

Contrary to myth, Christianity's concept of marriage has not been set in stone since the days of Christ, but has constantly evolved as a concept and ritual. Prof. John Boswell, the late Chairman of Yale University’s history department, discovered that in addition to heterosexual marriage ceremonies in ancient Christian church liturgical documents, there were also ceremonies called the "Office of Same-Sex Union" (10th and 11th century), and the "Order for Uniting Two Men" (11th and 12th century).

These church rites had all the symbols of a heterosexual marriage: the whole community gathered in a church, a blessing of the couple before the altar was conducted with their right hands joined, holy vows were exchanged, a priest officiatied in the taking of the Eucharist and a wedding feast for the guests was celebrated afterwards. These elements all appear in contemporary illustrations of the holy union of the Byzantine Warrior-Emperor, Basil the First (867-886 CE) and his companion John.

Original Article or

A Kiev art museum contains a curious icon from St. Catherine's Monastery on Mt. Sinai in Israel. It shows two robed Christian saints. Between them is a traditional Roman ‘pronubus’ (a best man), overseeing a wedding. The pronubus is Christ. The married couple are both men.

Is the icon suggesting that a gay "wedding" is being sanctified by Christ himself? The idea seems shocking. But the full answer comes from other early Christian sources about the two men featured in the icon, St. Sergius and St. Bacchus, two Roman soldiers who were Christian martyrs. These two officers in the Roman army incurred the anger of Emperor Maximian when they were exposed as ‘secret Christians’ by refusing to enter a pagan temple. Both were sent to Syria circa 303 CE where Bacchus is thought to have died while being flogged. Sergius survived torture but was later beheaded. Legend says that Bacchus appeared to the dying Sergius as an angel, telling him to be brave because they would soon be reunited in heaven.

While the pairing of saints, particularly in the early Christian church, was not unusual, the association of these two men was regarded as particularly intimate. Severus, the Patriarch of Antioch (AD 512 - 518) explained that, "we should not separate in speech they [Sergius and Bacchus] who were joined in life". This is not a case of simple "adelphopoiia." In the definitive 10th century account of their lives, St. Sergius is openly celebrated as the "sweet companion and lover" of St. Bacchus. Sergius and Bacchus's close relationship has led many modern scholars to believe they were lovers. But the most compelling evidence for this view is that the oldest text of their martyrology, written in New Testament Greek describes them as "erastai,” or "lovers". In other words, they were a male homosexual couple. Their orientation and relationship was not only acknowledged, but it was fully accepted and celebrated by the early Christian church, which was far more tolerant than it is today.

Such same gender Christian sanctified unions also took place in Ireland in the late 12thand/ early 13th century, as the chronicler Gerald of Wales (‘Geraldus Cambrensis’) recorded.

Same-sex unions in pre-modern Europe list in great detail some same gender ceremonies found in ancient church liturgical documents. One Greek 13th century rite, "Order for Solemn Same-Sex Union", invoked St. Serge and St. Bacchus, and called on God to "vouchsafe unto these, Thy servants [N and N], the grace to love one another and to abide without hate and not be the cause of scandal all the days of their lives, with the help of the Holy Mother of God, and all Thy saints". The ceremony concludes: "And they shall kiss the Holy Gospel and each other, and it shall be concluded".

Another 14th century Serbian Slavonic "Office of the Same Sex Union", uniting two men or two women, had the couple lay their right hands on the Gospel while having a crucifix placed in their left hands. After kissing the Gospel, the couple were then required to kiss each other, after which the priest, having raised up the Eucharist, would give them both communion.

Records of Christian same sex unions have been discovered in such diverse archives as those in the Vatican, in St. Petersburg, in Paris, in Istanbul and in the Sinai, covering a thousand-years from the 8th to the 18th century.

The Dominican missionary and Prior, Jacques Goar (1601-1653), includes such ceremonies in a printed collection of Greek Orthodox prayer books, “Euchologion Sive Rituale Graecorum Complectens Ritus Et Ordines Divinae Liturgiae” (Paris, 1667).

While homosexuality was technically illegal from late Roman times, homophobic writings didn’t appear in Western Europe until the late 14th century. Even then, church-consecrated same sex unions continued to take place.

At St. John Lateran in Rome (traditionally the Pope's parish church) in 1578, as many as thirteen same-gender couples were joined during a high Mass and with the cooperation of the Vatican clergy, "taking communion together, using the same nuptial Scripture, after which they slept and ate together" according to a contemporary report. Another woman to woman union is recorded in Dalmatia in the 18th century.

Prof. Boswell's academic study is so well researched and documented that it poses fundamental questions for both modern church leaders and heterosexual Christians about their own modern attitudes towards homosexuality.

For the Church to ignore the evidence in its own archives would be cowardly and deceptive. The evidence convincingly shows that what the modern church claims has always been its unchanging attitude towards homosexuality is, in fact, nothing of the sort.

It proves that for the last two millennia, in parish churches and cathedrals throughout Christendom, from Ireland to Istanbul and even in the heart of Rome itself, homosexual relationships were accepted as valid expressions of a God-given love and committment to another person, a love that could be celebrated, honored and blessed, through the Eucharist in the name of, and in the presence of, Jesus Christ.

I'm as progressive as the next guy but, Hmmm..

Don't we need to retain some kind of connection with the most enduring and fundamental core traditions of an organized society?

The institution of marriage between genders, ie: a man and woman, probably goes back at least 10,000 years.

If there are any standards and traditions that transcend certain initiatives we grant to government to apply and interpose itself into our lives, this has to be a place where we say enough.

Government shouldn't be involved in legislating the institution of marriage anymore than it should be involved in legislating with whom you go to bed.

For government to say that same gender "marriages" are now acceptable is for government to assume it can play God.

There's nothing new about that. But, at some point we have to acknowledge there is a higher authority and it isn't the fucking government.

Clearly, the gay and lesbian lobbies in this country are almost as out of control as the government is.

How to treat High Cholesterol

If your cholesterol level is high, or if you are...

If your cholesterol level is high, or if you are at risk for heart disease, your doctor may perscribe a medication to reduce your cholesterol. There are several types of medications available, each type with a different action.

Statins – Statins are one of the more commonly perscribed medications to reduce cholesterol. These drugs inhibits the enzyme which the liver uses to produce cholesterol, thereby slowing the production of cholesterol in the body. People at risk for developing the plaques which line the arteries, or artherosclerosis, are usually given this medication. Statins not only slow the growth of plaques, but they also can shrink existing plaques and actually make them less likely to break apart, causing stroke or heart attack. Risk factors for artherosclerosis are:

High cholesterol levels;
Diabetes;
A family history of early-age heart attack or heart disease;
Advancing age.

There are several statins that are commonly perscribed. These medications have many differences, including their cholesterol-blocking ability, their side-effects, how they interact with other drugs, and their ability to reduce heart attack and stroke. Some common statins which are frequently perscribed include:

Atorvastatin (Lipitor);
Rosuvastatin (Crestor);
Fluvastatin (Lescol);
Simvastatin (Zocor);
Lovastatin (Mevacor);
Pravastatin (Pravachol).

Most side-effects of the statins are mild, like nausea and vomiting, but one major side-effect that is very rare, is rhabdomyolysis, which can cause muscle damage and eventually kidney failure. Any muscle or joint pain experienced while taking a statin should be reported immediately to your doctor.

Resins – Resins are another cholesterol-lowering medication. They bind with cholesterol-containing bile acids in the intestines and are then excreted. Resins actually reduce LDL cholesterol and are often perscribed with statins for a combined effect of lowered LDL cholesterol. Currently perscribed resins include:

Cholestyramine (Questran);
Colestipol (Colestid);
Colesevelam (WelChol).

Resins have few side-effects (gas, bloating, nausea and constipation); however, they may interfer with the absorption of other medications taken at the same time.

Nicotinic Acid – Nicotinic acid (niacin) is a common B vitamin, which, given in therapeutic doses, reduces LDL cholesterol and triglycerides. An over-the-counter niacin tablet as a dietary supplement would not produce the same effect, and could result in serious side-effects. Common trade names are:

Niacin;
Niacor;
Slo-Niacin.

Nicotinic acid interacts with other medications, including blood pressure medication, and your doctor should be consulted.

Gemfibrozil (Lopid) -- Gemfibrozil reduces triglycerides and increases HDL cholesterol, the good cholesterol, in the blood. It interacts with other medications, such as Coumidin, which could lead to increased bleeding, and glyburide, which could cause low blood sugar. The most serious, but rare, side-effect is rabdomyolysis, which could lead to kidney failure. Your doctor should be consulted and your current medications discussed before beginning therapy on gemfibrozil.

Clofibrate (Atromid-S) -- Clofibrate also acts by reducing LDL cholesterol levels; however, because of its many side-effects, it is usually perscribed only if all other methods of reducing cholesterol are ineffective. All current medications, including over-the-counter drugs, should be discussed with your doctor before using clofibrate.

Ursodiol (Actigall, Urso) – Ursodiol is made by the liver and reduces the production of cholesterol by the liver and absorption of cholesterol in the intestines. Side-effects are GI related, including nausea and vomiting, diarrhea, and constipation; and rash and back pain. Other medications may interfer with its function, reducing its effectiveness.

There are many more medications, including dietary supplements and over-the-counter medications that can help in reducing cholesterol levels. Before taking any medications, discuss them with your doctor and let your doctor know what medications you're taking already, to decide which may be best for you.

Citre Shine Shampoo - Not a scam !

Why Citre Shine is not a very well-known brand, I...

Why Citre Shine is not a very well-known brand, I do not know. What I know is that it is a very good line of hair care products.

My personal favorites are the (separate) Shampoo and Hair Conditioner. These two come in different variants for specific hair types and results. Since my hair is quite dry and wavy, I prefer to use the anti-frizz variant.

When you first use the shampoo, you will at once notice the clean smell. It is not too fruity and sweet and neither is it a soapy clean smell. In fact it just smells fresh. Unlike with other shampoos, Citre Shine’s smell lasts throughout the day even if you get exposed to the sun and pollution. The conditioner enhances this smell even more.

Even as you use the conditioner, you can feel the smoothness of your hair. When you are done washing your hair, you can either air dry or blow dry it. Either way, you hair will be pleasantly surprised at how neat it looks like. The more amazing thing is the shine. The first time I used both products, I couldn’t believe how shiny my hair had become!

To get the best out of the shampoo and conditioner, I suggest that you take your time in the shower. Let the products soak in for a few minutes. Do this especially for the conditioner. Use a small amount and then leave it on for a while. Then make sure that you rinse them both off very well.

In order to experience what these great products can give you, you have to be willing to shell out a bit more than you usually would on your normal shampoo and conditioner. They usually offer discounts and additional free contents with the bigger bottles. You don’t have to use a large amount of both the shampoo and conditioner to get your desired results. In fact, I do not use the shampoo everyday. There are days when I just use the conditioner as my hair is still shiny and not all tangled up.

Do not let the price turn you off. Think about it. With Citre Shine, you do not need to use as much of the shampoo and conditioner as you would with the more affordable brands.

:spin2:As Citre Shine is not very popular (yet), there might be a problem finding the products. If I were you, I’d snatch a couple of bottles up if I chanced upon them.:spin2:

Appendicitis in Children

Appendicitis is known to be a surgical disease,...

Appendicitis is known to be a surgical disease, as it commonly requires removal of the inflamed vermiform appendix, a tubular prominence of the cecum. Appendicitis occurs due to infection of the vermiform appendix, which becomes enlarged and irritated. Doctors consider appendicitis to be a medical emergency and they usually recommend surgery regardless of the actual stage of the disease. Although the surgical treatment for appendicitis is known to be safe and reliable, many patients develop post-operative complications as a consequence of malpractice. There are also various reported cases of unnecessary appendectomy, performed on patients who eventually turn out to have a healthy appendix.

While the surgical intervention for appendicitis involves few risks in the early stages of the disease, advanced infection of the vermiform appendix greatly increases the risks of post-operative complications. The removal of a seriously diseased appendix is difficult and risky, as the operated patients can develop sepsis or abcess soon after the surgical intervention. Well aware of this fact, most physicians focus on timely revealing possible symptoms of appendicitis in patients. Guided by the impulse of intervening promptly, some doctors often mistakenly perform surgery on healthy patients. There were various cases of unnecessary appendicitis surgery reported in the last decades and the phenomenon can also be seen in present.

The cases of unnecessary appendicitis surgery can be easily explained by the deceiving nature of this very common disease. Appendicitis often generates unspecific symptoms which can be misleading in the process of deciding upon the correct diagnosis. Appendicitis is commonly mistaken for various other internal disorders that generate resembling symptoms. To further complicate the matter, sometimes patients with appendicitis may actually be asymptomatic. In such cases, the specific manifestations of appendicitis emerge late after the disease becomes serious.

Although doctors can choose among various medical techniques in order to confirm their presumptive diagnosis, none of the tests available nowadays is 100 percent reliable in revealing clear physiological signs of appendicitis. Considering this fact, surgeons incline towards assuming the risk of removing a healthy appendix rather than allowing the disease to progress further. Delayed medical intervention can be fatal for appendicitis sufferers and this is the main reason why surgeons often choose to timely perform appendectomy on patients who present possible clinical symptoms of the disease.

The overall number of cases of unnecessary appendectomy has known a slight decline in recent years. However, statistics indicate that in present more than 9 percent of pediatric appendectomies are performed on patients who actually have a healthy appendix. This is due to the fact that very young children and infants are more difficult to correctly diagnose with appendicitis. By contrast, the cases of unnecessary appendectomy among adult patients are nowadays more rare.

In present, malpractice and misdiagnosis of appendicitis can be considered to be indicators for the lack of precision of the existent medical techniques. Therefore, modern medicine needs new, more reliable means of diagnosing internal disorders such as appendicitis.

Health Advice For The Workplace

Do you spend long hours at your computer? If you...

Do you spend long hours at your computer? If you are experiencing pain in your upper limbs (hand, wrist, neck, back or shouler) check out your computer workstation design. Following are four computer workstation design challenges and solutions.

Monitor Positioned Incorrect With Respect to Overhead Light and Window:

If the computer user is facing the window (or if the outside light is shining directly on the monitor) office glare may be a factor. If long fluorescent light bulbs overhead are perpendicular to the direction you are facing it can reflect in your eyes. The eyes constantly refocus throughout the day and the added glare from these two light sources can increase the risk of eyestrain.

Solution: If you have long fluorescent light bulbs overhead try to face in the same direction as the length of the bulbs so the light will reflect off the side of your body instead of in your eyes. Place your monitor perpendicular to the window so the outside light will reflect off the side of your body. Due to the design of your office you may not be able to place your monitor correctly for each of these lighting sources. You may try closing or facing the blinds upwards to reduce the outside light.

Desk Is Too Narrow for Monitor and Keyboard

If the desk is too narrow the monitor will be too close to the eyes in most instances. The uncomfortable feeling in the eyes will be immediately obvious and this will cause the computer user to move back to view the monitor comfortably. This will cause a reach to the keyboard and mouse with a great potential of creating discomfort in the shoulders.

Solution: The simple solution is to replace your large monitor with a flat panel. You will love it. Flat panels have really come down in price. Or purchase a desk that is deep enough to hold the monitor and keyboard AND allow you to work close to the keyboard without reaching and a comfortable distance from the monitor. The flat panel is probably the most economical and will create more peaceful aesthetics.

Keyboard and Mouse Too High Or Low:

This can create improper typing and mousing posture - either raising the shoulders creating tensed muscles or tilting neck down and creating bent wrists. Usually the keyboard is too high due to non-adjustable desks at standard manufacturing heights of 29".

Solution: Raise or lower the work surface so that the shoulders are in a relaxed position. This can be done with an articulating arm/tray or an adjustable height desk. When the elbows are bent they should be slightly higher than the top of the keys on your keyboard. Keep wrists straight when typing and do not rest on pads while typing.

Mouse at a Different Level than Keyboard:

This can create an awkward reach to the mouse. The arms should be close to the body when mousing with the elbows bent 90 - 120 degrees. Do not straighten your arm when mousing because it can cause fatigue and discomfort to the shoulder blade area.

Solution: Place the mouse directly next to the keyboard preferably with no break between the keyboard and mouse. Be sure that your shoulders are in a relaxed position.

Skin Care Lies

With an increasing emphasis on beauty and age...

With an increasing emphasis on beauty and age defiance in North American society, everyone seems to be seeking ways to make themselves appear younger by taking better care of their skin. While it is true that skin is one of the keys to a healthy, youthful appearance, not all skin care treatments that are proposed, or even that are popular, are effective. Here are some of the top myths when it comes to skin care.

1) Acne. Acne is the bane of everyone from their teenage years and onward. There are so many false rumors out there concerning acne that an article could be written on them alone. To start with, acne does not cease miraculously when you are out of your teens. In some people, acne is a perpetual problem and will continue throughout their lives. Many of the false ideas about acne are extremely detrimental to people who are afflicted with the condition. Acne is not a sign that an individual does not wash their face. In fact, many individuals with acne will be told this by their peers and the result will be extremely counter-productive; they end up washing their faces too much. The dryer skin does not clear out the acne problem, instead it exacerbates it. Acne may be aggravated by certain foods in an individual’s diet, but rarely are the “suspect foods” (chocolate, French fries, or pizza) the main trigger. Finally, remember that acne can be treated by several types of medicine on the market today-and effectively- so it is all right to go to your doctor and consult her about acne treatments.

2) Tanning. Tanning is often advertised as adding a warm, healthy glow to your skin. The truth is, nothing is worse for your skin than direct exposure to the harmful ultraviolet rays that are necessary to tan, whether you are on a bed or in the sun. Tanning may help to get rid of formed acne, but it will not prevent new pores from clogging. Tanning has little benefits beyond immediate aesthetic appeal, and in the long run it will prove harmful to your skin. It is best to use sun block whenever you are out in the sun.

3) Moisturizers. Many people think that moisturizers will help in making their skin appear more youthful by getting rid of wrinkles. This is not the case. Moisturizers will help to lubricate the skin and lessen dryness, but they will not serve to repair the microscopic damage at the cell level that wrinkles represent.

4) Skin Care ingredients. For many years, top beauticians have placed slices of cucumber over the eyes of their clients in order to reduce skin damage and swelling. Today, you will find many products on the shelves that depict a cucumber or slice of cucumber and claim to include cucumber extracts that will help rejuvenate your skin. The fact is that it is not any particular mineral in the cucumber that is beneficial to the skin, it is the fact that cucumbers are mostly made of water, which leeches into the skin during the process and gives the appearance of re-invigoration.

All of these myths are used today to help sell products via a method known as scare tactics. In fact, if you follow the advice of your doctor most of your skin care needs will be resolved, and they will not require a lot of home grown methods and wives tale rumors.

Acid Reflux Complications

Acid Reflux or Gastroesophageal reflux disease...

Acid Reflux or Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is a condition in which the liquid content of the stomach backs up or refluxes into the esophagus. The liquid can inflame and damage the lining of the esophagus. This regurgitated liquid mainly contains acid and pepsin, both being produced by the stomach. It may also contain bile. Amongst all the contents of the liquid, acid is the most harmful.

Once GERD starts, it stays for life-long. GERD is a chronic condition and the treatment has to continue indefinitely. The reflux of the stomach’s liquid contents into the esophagus occurs in normal individuals also. The difference of it occurring in GERD patients is that the refluxed liquid contains more acid that often remains in the esophagus for longer duration. The body has ways of protecting itself from the effects of reflux and acid. Saliva contains bicarbonate that neutralizes the small amount of acid that remains in the esophagus. Gravity, swallowing and saliva are the protective mechanisms for the esophagus when an individual is in the upright position.

There are various complications arising because of acid reflux.

Ulcers –
The cells lining the esophagus are sometimes damaged due to the reflux of liquid from the stomach into the esophagus. An ulcer is a break in the lining of the esophagus that occurs in an area of inflammation. It may give rise to bleeding in the esophagus. When the bleeding becomes severe, blood transfusion is required along with endoscopic or surgical treatment.

Strictures –
Scars are formed when the ulcers of the esophagus heal. The scar tissue shrinks and narrows the lumen of the esophagus. This scarred narrowing is called a stricture. It may cause swallowed food to get stuck in the esophagus.
Barrett’s esophagus – Severe GERD or Long-standing cause cells to change that line the esophagus. These cells then become pre-cancerous and then finally cancerous.

Cough and Asthma –
Some nerves in the esophagus are stimulated by the refluxed acid, which results in pain. Other nerves that are also stimulated provoke coughing. The stimulated esophageal nerves that connect to the nerves going to the lungs causes the breathing tubes to narrow, resulting in an attack of asthma.

Inflammation of the throat and larynx –
When the refluxed liquid gets past the upper esophageal sphincter, it enters the throat and the voice box, causing inflammation and soar throat.

Inflammation and infection of the lungs –
The reflux of liquid into the lungs results in coughing and choking. This can lead to infection of the lungs and result in pneumonia.

Fluid in the sinuses and middle ear –
Found in children, it is caused when the sinuses and middle ears are closed off from the nasal passages by the swelling of the adenoids. Fluid is then accumulated within them.

GERD is treated with life-style changes, antacids, histamine antagonists (H2 blockers), proton pump inhibitors (PPIs), pro-motility drugs, foam barriers, surgery, and endoscopy.

:madfire:Does anyone here suffer from acid reflux? :madfire:

President Obama on Wednesday roundly dismissed...

President Obama on Wednesday roundly dismissed GOP rival Mitt Romney's claim to credit for the resurgence of the U.S. auto industry as "one of his Etch-A-Sketch moments," in an exclusive interview with ABC News' Robin Roberts.
During a visit to Lansing, Mich., on Tuesday, Romney said the idea of a managed bankruptcy for GM and Chrysler had been his idea at the height of the economic crisis in 2009. "So I'll take a lot of credit for the fact that this industry's come back," he said.
Obama has argued that the managed bankruptcy could not have been possible without his decision to authorize a multi-billion dollar infusion of taxpayer cash to keep the companies afloat. Romney opposed federal government aid.
"I don't think anybody takes that seriously," he told Roberts of Romney's claim. "People remember his position, which was, 'Let's let Detroit go bankrupt' and his opposition to government involvement in making sure that GM and Chrysler didn't go under."
"And I - every businessperson and economist out there understands that at the time I had to make the decision, there was no private sector option. Nobody was opening up their wallets to lend money to GM and Chrysler," he said.

*FBI: Washington White Supremacist Plotted to...

FBI: Washington White Supremacist Plotted to Kill Obama in 2010

http://www.splcenter.org/blog/2012/0...010/#more-9164

The FBI in 2010 disrupted what its agents now believe was a terrorist plot that involved killing President Obama, according to testimony and court documents filed in U.S. District Court in Spokane, Wash.

The revelation came at the two-day sentencing hearing for white supremacist Wayde Lynn Kurt, the accused mastermind of an alleged plot that was foiled with his arrest on federal firearms and forgery charges.

At the time of his arrest on Aug. 30, 2010, Kurt was associated with a gang of violent neo-Nazi skinheads and white supremacist Odinists who proudly talked of carrying out “coon-hunting” racial attacks in the Pacific Northwest. Their conversations were captured on a videotape that was later turned over to the FBI and shown in court during Kurt’s sentencing hearing.

“I believe Mr. Kurt had a terrorist plan that involved the president of the United States,” FBI Special Agent Joseph Cleary testified Thursday.

U.S. District Court Judge Frem Nielsen granted prosecutors’ request at the hearing for a “terrorism enhancement” to Kurt’s prison sentence. The judge ruled that Kurt’s activities met the definition of terrorism after hearing testimony that included newly released excerpts from secret tape recordings from conversations Kurt had with an FBI informant.

“You are a risk to the public because your criminal life is serious,” the judge said today in sentencing Kurt to 13 years in prison – two more than requested by federal prosecutors.

The judge noted the 54-year-old defendant has six prior federal felony convictions and shows no remorse for his acts. During his almost 20 years in federal prison, Kurt associated with other white supremacists and militia leaders and became a high priest – or “gothi” – in the Asatru religion popular with a growing segment or racists.

Kurt’s “final resolution” terrorist plans were given additional credence, federal authorities say, because Kurt is a master counterfeiter who not only made counterfeit currency but embossed driver’s licenses, Social Security cards and other forms of identification. He had 24 different names with his photo on forged Washington state driver’s licenses and even obtained a set of dental records using one of his false identities, investigators said.

But it was his talk of violence with other white supremacists and illegal contact with firearms that concerned the FBI the most, testimony and court documents disclose.

In a conversation recorded on Aug. 12, 2010, Kurt referred to President Obama as “Barry Soetoro,” the name used by those in the so-called birther movement who falsely claim the chief executive wasn’t born in the United States and is actually an Indonesian citizen.

Kurt talks on the tapes about setting up a paramilitary group or “militia-type organization “based loosely on concepts of the Northwest Front headed by Harold Covington” and using polygraphs and voice-stress analyzers to screen prospective members.

Kurt talked about other white supremacist groups, including the Aryan Nations, being bankrupted and put out of business by lawsuits filed by Morris Dees and the Southern Poverty Law Center (publisher of this blog).

On the transcript, Kurt boasts that his antigovernment, white separatist militia would avoid such civil suits by leasing buildings and equipment and using debit cards for cash transactions “so (they) can’t even be traced, you know. Morris Dees and his pig s-h-i-t wouldn’t even be able to figure (it) out.”

Kurt then refers to discussions “about how to rip off nuclear materials,” assassinating the president, replicating the April 1995 deadly attack on the Murrah Building in Oklahoma City, suicide missions and using an aircraft to turn a city into an inferno.

“Just f-u-c-king, I mean, you know, killing the President of the United States ‘cause he is a f-u-c-king beep and how to do it,” Kurt says on the tape excerpts, admitted as a public court document.

Obama has “got no interest in the United States whatsoever other than running us right into the ground,” Kurt says, quickly adding: “He needs to be killed. He needs to be killed.”

Later in the tapes, Kurt talks about spending almost 20 years in prison for various federal crimes, including counterfeiting, and how he now wants to deal with “the rats” whose testimony helped convict him. In 1989, he was acquitted of aggravated first-degree murder in Snohomish County, in western Washington, after being found in possession of Mac-10 machine gun ammunition linked to the murder of a 6-year-old child.

On the stand Wednesday, Kurt said he wasn’t involved in that child’s murder but admitted breaking other federal laws that he doesn’t consider crimes.

“They’ve got to answer for what they’ve done,” he says on the tapes of informants who have testified against him, “but business first. Take care of business. Got to stop Barry Soetoro from being re-elected. Absolutely.”

After learning Kurt was planning a terrorist attack that he described as his “final solution,” the FBI used terrorism task force agents and an aircraft to follow Kurt to a shooting range in northeastern Washington. Nine days later, in line with the FBI’s stated goal of disrupting potential terrorist plots, the decision was made to arrest Kurt on Aug. 30, 2010, in Spokane.

“You could say you were ‘just talking,’ but that talk was really serious and of great concern,” the judge said as he sentenced Kurt. “I don’t know what that ‘final solution’ was you talked about, but I think the FBI was living up to its responsibility by stopping this before something happened.”

At the time of his arrest, Kurt was associated with an Odinist group, Vanguard Kindred, and a sister neo-Nazi skinhead gang called Valhalla Bound Skinheads, whose members had carried out racial attacks in Eastern Washington and North Idaho, referring to the forays as “coon hunting.”

While previously in prison, Kurt befriended another Odinist, Richard Kemp, a convicted member of the 1980s terrorist group The Order, which went on a murderous rampage in hopes of starting a race war, in an effort funded through armed robberies and counterfeiting.

At Thursday’s hearing, the prosecutors played a video of a group holding an Odinist “blot” ceremony, in which the master of ceremony asks four Norse gods for protection from “beeps, beaners and chinks” as Nazi swastikas and National Socialist Movement flags hang on nearby trees.

When he voluntarily took the witness stand at the sentencing hearing, Kurt testified he is merely a race separatist and doesn’t condone violence. Under questioning by defense attorney Richard Wall, Kurt flatly refuted his involvement in any terrorist plot or plan to assassinate the president.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Earl Hicks later argued that Kurt was committing perjury in a failed attempt to dispute overwhelming evidence against him.

“I don’t know specifically what he had planned,” FBI agent Cleary testified. “He was desperate. He was old, and he was going to make something happen.”

The agent’s testimony was supported in a 22-page sentencing memorandum and dozens of pages of additional evidence submitted to the court by Hicks and fellow Assistant U.S. Attorney Stephanie Van Marter.

The Justice Department believes the evidence supports the conclusion that Kurt intended to carry out a “terrorist act against the government to include ensuring that President Obama would not be re-elected,” the prosecutors’ memorandum says.

Portions of the tapes were not played for a jury last October that convicted Kurt of being a felon in possession of a firearm. The following month Kurt was indicted on additional federal charges of aggravated identity theft, two counts of unlawful production of an identification card, two counts of unlawful possession of an identification card, and making a false statement.

On Feb. 8, Kurt pleaded guilty to unlawful production of Social Security cards and making a false statement to federal investigators. The judge sentenced Kurt to the maximum 10 years on the firearms conviction from the jury trial and added three more years for the false identification conviction.
The Green River Formation, a largely vacant area of mostly federal land that covers the territory where Colorado, Utah and Wyoming come together, contains about as much recoverable oil as all the rest the world’s proven reserves combined, an auditor from the Government Accountability Office told Congress on Thursday....

... “USGS estimates that the Green River Formation contains about 3 trillion barrels of oil, and about half of this may be recoverable, depending on available technology and economic conditions,” Mittal testified.

“The Rand Corporation, a nonprofit research organization, estimates that 30 to 60 percent of the oil shale in the Green River Formation can be recovered,” Mittal told the subcommittee. “At the midpoint of this estimate, almost half of the 3 trillion barrels of oil would be recoverable. This is an amount about equal to the entire world's proven oil reserves.”

... In her written testimony, Mittal noted that three-fourths of the Green River shale oil is under federal land.

“The federal government is in a unique position to influence the development of oil shale because nearly three-quarters of the oil shale within the Green River Formation lies beneath federal lands managed by the Department of the Interior’s (Interior) Bureau of Land Management (BLM),” she testified.

MLM duplication vs real duplication

The Rich Dad Poor Dad (the MLM bible of sorts)...

The Rich Dad Poor Dad (the MLM bible of sorts) teaches the benefit of residual income, reinvesting your profits, positive cash flow (MLM fail), and duplicating yourself as in starting a franchise, and/or having employees run your business for you.

To me, MLM, specifically the distributorship is a fake, make believe "business." Sure, some do wery well, but they can be considered an enigma, since it's so exceedingly rare that this actually occurs. Really, starting up an MLM distributorship is logistically easier than setting up a lemonade stand, and almost as cheap in some cases, typically a few hundred dollars. The idea is to duplicate yourself and profit from the effort of your downlines, but there's a problem:

You don't own the business. You can incorporate the cash flow from the distributorship, but you have no legal rights with the company. There's another problem:

In virtually all cases, without building a downline you will not profit (said another way, cash flow negative, or "in the red"), or perhaps make a small pittance at best. You're duplicating a failure! It's no wonder that you need thousands upon thousands of downlines to achieve some real measure of profit. Even ponzis and pyramids work on duplication - one guys pays in, then gets 2-3 to do the same, who gets 2-3 to do the same, until eventually you get high enough to break even and reverse the negative cash flow. Add (usually token) products to the equation and you've just described most MLM's.

Compare this to true duplication - owning a chain of stores, owning several beverage routes, or even just one that you lease out while you pursue other income streams, owning a security company where you contract out bouncers to different accounts, and you get maybe $10-$15 a night from each bouncer's salary. These are examples of real duplication, not make-believe MLM "franchises." LOL Even if one of these real business owners had taken a loan to start the business, the profits will satisfy the monthly note, and still provide sufficiant income.

BTW, the owners of an MLM would be examples of real duplication. Not the sheeple who do the sales work for them, but the actual owners.

The sooner we all realize this, the sooner we can stop pretending to be running a fake business, and we can all move on to more productive and rewarding endeavors.

Congress Displays More Gutless Obedience To Israel

*The “U.S.” House of Representatives Again...

The “U.S.” House of Representatives Again Promotes Israel Over America

http://www.veteranstoday.com/2012/05...-over-america/

In yet another sickening display of gutless obedience to the Israel lobby and the Jewish dominated media, the “U.S.” House of Representatives has passed legislation which promotes Israel’s interests over the interests of America and Americans by passing the United States-Israel Enhanced Security Cooperation Act of 2012.

This treasonous bill was sponsored by Zionist and Israel-firster Eric Cantor and Goy Boy Steny Hoyer. Only two Congressmen voted against it, Ron Paul and John Dingell!

Ron Paul, who draws thousands of people to his presidential campaign rallies but who is virtually blocked-out by the kosher (I use kosher very objectively and honestly which requires strong negative connotations because it is based on nonsense, it causes inhumane treatment of animals and it puts BILLIONS of dollars in the pockets of rabbis and is just another religious scam) media, openly defied the powerful Israel lobby regarding this unconstitutional bill.

Paul said, “This bill states that it is the policy of the United States to ‘reaffirm the enduring commitment of the United States to the security of the State of Israel as a Jewish state.’ However, according to our Constitution the policy of the United States government should be to protect the security of the United States, not to guarantee the religious, ethnic, or cultural composition of a foreign country.

In fact, our own Constitution prohibits the establishment of any particular religion in the US.” This violation of the Constitution’s principle of separation of church and state should be pursued in efforts to stop foreign aid handouts to Israel.

A similar version of the bill is in the “U.S.” Senate and will be voted on soon. Israel owns not only the “U.S.” House of Representatives, but also the “U.S.” Senate and the White House.

The passage of the similar bill in the Senate should have no trouble being passed. Especially with rabid pro-Israel senators the likes of Chuck Schumer. Schumer is under the delusion that God put him in the “U.S.” Senate so he could protect the Jewish state of Israel.

Schumer openly said on a Jewish radio program, “”You know, my name …. comes from the word shomer, guardian, watcher. My ancestors were guardians of the ghetto wall in Chortkov. And I believe Hashem (God) actually gave me that name. One of my roles, very important in the United States senate, is to be a shomer — to be a or the shomer Yisrael. And I will continue to be that with every bone in my body … ”

As the warmongering nuclear armed state of Israel and its sell-outs in the “U.S.” Congress and White House move the world towards another unnecessary war for a Greater Israel, we need to figure out how to strike at the root of this deadly problem before it is too late. It appears that the American founder and Deist,

Thomas Paine, gave us the answer in his eye-opening and powerful book, The Age of Reason, The Complete Edition. In this book he called for a revolution in religion based on our God-given reason and Deism. If we do that all the entanglements between Israel and the U.S. would be struck with a powerful blow at their most fundamental level.

This would eventually forever correct this ancient, destructive and unnecessary problem.

.
Dimon how are YOU successful? Where are YOU succeeding for America and the American People? We're not upset at you Jamie because you're "rich" or "successful", nobody begrudged Steve Jobs for his billions, we are angry because you are a create-nothing, steal everything, fraud-racket, an unproductive, do-nothing criminal mafia terrorist who becomes a bailout queen crybaby when they lose a gamble , yet who has the audacity to believe they are a definition of "successful" in 2011.
In my view this is insanity.

A Hedge is one thing, a bet synthetics with no intent to hedge underlying assets or future cash flows, is another.

Jamie Dimond @ JP Morgan has lost at least 2 Billion, with perhaps more to come after the winding of these transactions.

Romney knows the profits will go to the Bank, and the losses if great enough, will be passed to the treasury.

Perhaps Romney needs the Wall Street cash to get elected.

Unbelievable.

My only hope is that he will flip flop on this promise to repel Dodd-Frank & the Volcker Rule.
In deposition, detectives said Atchison suggested the mother tell her daughter that "you found her a sweet boyfriend who will bring her presents." The undercover detective expressed concern about physical injury to the 5-year-old girl as a result of the sexual activity. Detectives said Atchison responded, " I am always gentle and loving; not to worry, no damage ever, no rough stuff ever. I only like it soft and nice." The undercover detective asked how Atchison can be certain of no injury. He responded, "Just gotta go slow and very easy. I've done it plenty," according to detectives.

by JOHN NOLTE 16 hours ago 208 POST A COMMENT
Over at the left-wing Politico, the headline is "Limbaugh Boycott Cost 'Millions." But once you actually click on the story, you get the real story:

"It hit us pretty hard," Dickey said during a call with financial analysts yesterday. "A couple of million bucks in the first quarter and a couple of million bucks in quarter two."
Dickey would not give exact figures, but said the "millions" accounted for "about one percent" of the roughly $245 million in first quarter revenues, and said he expected revenue to return to normal in June.

Cumulus owns just 38 of the 600 stations that air the Rush Limbaugh Show, which is nationally syndicated by Cumulus's competitor, Clear Channel Media. For its part, Clear Channel saw total revenues increase 6 percent the first quarter of 2011 to $671.5 million in the first quarter of 2012, according to MediaPost.

You have to wonder how much this failed boycott cost the suckers who contribute money to the anti-Semitic, Soros-funded, tax exempt Media Matters who led the campaign.
In other news: during this failed boycott, Limbaugh's ratings have increased across his 600 stations while CNN's ratings have collapsed, and the Washington Post is sinking almost as fast.
Limbaugh is part of New Media; he was New Media before the term New Media was created, and New Media is winning on many fronts these days. Much of this has to do with the rise of Twitter, which allows everyday Americans to fight, converse, and exchange information without the filter of the corrupt mainstream media.

Twitter is where much of the Limbaugh boycott wars were fought (the man himself is fighting back with this extraordinary tool), and who know how many thousands of everyday folks effectively joined the fight using 140 characters or less.

This is an amazing time. A communication revolution is taking place and The Truth is winning out as the liars stare into the abyss of irrelevance and bankruptcy.

Are you on Twitter? Are you challenging, exposing, and and fighting the corrupt media? Time to sign up. The future of our country is at stake and only Citizen Journalists can save it.
'WASHINGTON POST' FACES CIRCULATION, REVENUE COLLAPSE

by JOHN NOLTE 1 day ago 115 POST A COMMENT
Unless, like me, you're a believer in truth and objective reporting, there's no good news here:
The Washington Post Co. reported its first-quarter earnings on Friday, and the news coming out of the newspaper division was mostly grim. The unit lost $22.6 million in the quarter, with revenue down 8% and revenue from print advertising specifically falling 17%.

Meanwhile, the Post just reported one of the biggest circulation drops of any major newspaper with the lucrative Sunday edition selling 5.2% fewer copies and the daily edition skidding almost 10%.

We're seeing the same with the collapse of CNN's ratings. Not enough people like or respect Soledad O'Brien, Don Lemon, Anderson Cooper or Piers Morgan any more than they do Wapo.

Bottom line: People on the left and right are sick and tired of being lied to, and in the case of the Washington Post and CNN, the "lie" is this phony, dishonest, and transparent shield of objectivity these outlets hide behind in order to pummel Republicans and push a left-wing agenda.

As more and more Americans move online, they're finding honest and talented brokers of news, information, and analysis from all ends of the political spectrum. People might not agree with everything they read, but at least they know no one is treating them like a fool and trying to put one over on them.
CNN and the Washington Post and so many other cratering MSM entities either need to go out of business or do the honorable thing in announcing their biases and agenda. Personally, I don’t care which one they choose. Both would be good for America.

Certainly, both CNN and Wapo could choose to be unbiased and do things like, say, pursue Fast and Furious as hard as they did the non-story that Valerie Plame, but I just don't think the left is capable of being objective. When you're wrong about absolutely everything, objectivity and truth can only work against you.

The best news, however, is that these dishonest outlets are also losing their impact. New Media isn’t yet able to set the narrative agenda, but we sure can impact, expose, ridicule, deconstruct, and push things into the narrative. The difference between now and 2008 is already startling.

Truth will always win out, and now that the distribution of information is no longer bottlenecked by just a corrupt few, everything is changing for the better.

Palestinian gays flee to Israel

The Palestinian gays feel safer on the other side of the border
A number of gay Palestinian men are risking their lives to cross the border into Israel, claiming they feel safer among Israelis than their own people.
According to some estimates, there are now 300 gay Palestinian men secretly living and working in Israel.

Their willingness to live there - despite the risk of being detained and deported as a security threat - is due to Palestinian attitudes towards gay men, they claim.

One 22-year-old gay man who fled from Gaza into Israel four years ago told BBC World Service's Outlook programme he was almost killed when his family found out about his sexuality.

He says that when he was 18, he was caught with his boyfriend by his brother.

"[My brother] brought a stick and hit us," he said. "He tied us up with an iron rope and went to call my dad, and tell my partner's. Then he came back and hit us again."

Illegal status

The man said he escaped after his brother went out and told his mother and sister-in-law to make sure they did not run away.

Jerusalem has had two Gay Pride marches in the last two years
"I started crying to my mum, begging her to let us go. So she untied us, and said if my dad found out, he would kill me on the spot.

The man said he ran away and, when he discovered his family were hunting for him, fled to Israel. There, he says, he was placed under virtual house arrest because he was viewed as a potential security risk.

Shaul Gonen, of Israel's main gay rights lobbying group, Agudah, told Outlook that under international law Israel is obliged to offer asylum to those that seek it. But, he says, it can refuse if the applicants are from an area the state is in conflict with.

In practice, Palestinian gays end up being placed under virtual house arrest because of the fear that they may be potential suicide bombers.

"They are unable to find proper help," said Mr Gonen. "Everybody blames them for being something dangerous.

"The Palestinians say if you are gay, you must be a collaborator, while the Israelis treat you as a security threat."

Coercion

However, many Palestinian gays say they would still rather live under house arrest in Israel, where homosexuality is not considered a crime, than at home.

The 22-year-old who fled his home in Gaza alleged that those who do stay in the occupied territories are often coerced into working for the Palestinian police.

The gays are afraid of militant retribution if they return
He said that he himself had been stopped by police in Gaza, who had threatened to expose him as a homosexual. He alleged he was told by the police to sleep with another man in order to acquire damaging information about him.

The man alleged that after he refused, the Palestinian police had tortured him.

"They hit me. They put me in a pool of water with just my head sticking out," he claimed.

However, the Israeli secret service also often exploit gay Palestinians, said Mr Gonen.

He says this usually involves coercing them into working undercover, to gather information about other Palestinians.

The precarious status of the gay community means gay men often end up working for the secret service or as targets for exploitation by Israeli men.

"They work as prostitutes, selling their bodies unwillingly because they have to survive," said Mr Gonen.

"Sometimes the Israeli secret police try to recruit them, sometimes the Palestinian police try to recruit them.

"In the end they find themselves falling between all chairs. Nobody wants to help them, everybody wants to use them."

'Against Allah'

Gay Palestinians say they are mainly persecuted at home because of religious attitudes. Many Muslims claim that homosexuality is strictly against the Koran.

"From my point of view as a Muslim, this phenomenon is rejected completely," one Palestinian in Gaza told Outlook.

"The Islamic religion is merciful - we should try to help them to eliminate this bad phenomenon.

"It has a lot of bad things, a lot of disadvantages, a lot of bad sides - regarding their health, regarding their sociability, regarding their association with people around them."
