Medical Conditions Lead to High Blood Pressure

Posted 08-12-2009 at 03:05 AM by ssulemaa
Your blood pressure can increase due to a range of medical conditions. The most common among these conditions include:

• Cushing's syndrome: In this condition, corticosteroid medications, a pituitary tumor or other factors cause the adrenal glands to produce too much of the hormone cortisol. This hormone raises blood pressure.

Diabetic nephropathy: Your kidneys contain several minuscule blood vessels that clean waste from your blood and eliminate it through urine. But diabetes can cause damage to this filtering system leading to kidney failure and thereby increased blood pressure.

• Polycystic kidney disease: In this inherited disease, cysts present in your kidneys prevent their normal functioning and increase the blood pressure.

Hydronephrosis: This disease causes some parts of one or both kidneys get plugged by kidney stones, a tumor or other reasons. This blocks the normal flow of urine and raises blood pressure.

Aldosteronism: In this disease, a tumor in the adrenal gland, excessive growth of normal cells in the adrenal gland or some other factor causes the adrenal glands to produce a unnecessary amount of hormone aldosterone. This causes your kidneys to retain salt and ***** and lose too much potassium, which raises blood pressure.

Hyperthyroidism: This condition is caused due to overproduction of the third hormone by the thyroid gland. This leads to excessive activity of the hormones epinephrine and norepinephrine, which results in increased blood pressure.

Hyperparathyroidism: The parathyroid glands control levels of calcium and phosphorus in your body. If these glands produce unnecessarily extra amounts of parathyroid hormone, the amount of calcium in your blood increases which causes elevated blood pressure.

Coarctation of the aorta: This is a birth defect in which the body's main artery is narrow. This causes the heart to pump hard to supply blood through the aorta and to the remaining blood vessels of your body. This increases blood pressure mainly in your arms.

In case you are affected by the abovementioned medical conditions you should be watchful of the symptoms of high blood pressure and also take preventative measures.
